INTRODUCTION
THE PRAYERBOOK
The present Prayerbook contains the most basic daily prayers of the Orthodox Christian as they have been transmitted to us essentially by the Russian Church, although the other Orthodox Traditions in this matter are very similar.
The current Prayerbook includes the essential daily prayers of the Orthodox Christian, passed down to us primarily by the Russian Church, though other Orthodox Traditions are quite similar in this regard.
In this book, we will find the Psalms of the Holy Prophet King David, the prayer which Our Lord Himself taught His holy disciples, prayers of the desert fathers, prayers of the great hierarchs and teachers of the Church, as well as the prayers of more recent fathers.
In this book, we will explore the Psalms of the Holy Prophet King David, the prayer that Our Lord taught His holy disciples, prayers of the desert fathers, prayers of the great leaders and teachers of the Church, along with the prayers of more recent fathers.
The publication of such prayers does not limit the free expression of the Christian soul to the Creator, the Most-holy Theotokos and the Saints. On the contrary, by reading these prayers we learn how to pray. They become models for our own, personal prayers. Often, we would like to pray but, distracted by the bustling world around us, or troubled by fear or sorrow, we do not even know how to begin. We then begin with the Prayerbook [2] and find that not only much of what we wanted to say is included in the prayers of the fathers, but that afterwards, we find words of our own to continue the outpouring of our soul.
The publication of these prayers doesn't limit the free expression of the Christian spirit to God, the Blessed Mother, and the Saints. Instead, by reading these prayers, we learn how to pray. They serve as templates for our own personal prayers. Often, we want to pray but, distracted by the busy world around us or weighed down by fear or sadness, we don't even know where to start. We then turn to the Prayerbook [2] and discover that not only is much of what we want to express found in the prayers of the holy ones, but afterwards, we also find our own words to continue the outpouring of our hearts.
There is yet another gift in the Prayerbook. As Orthodox Christians we are all members of the same Body. We express and partake of that oneness in the services of the Church, especially in the Divine Liturgy. Through the Prayerbook, this oneness is brought into our homes or any place that an Orthodox Christian reads it. Our own prayers are carried to the Throne of God on the wings of prayers that have been used by the People of God for centuries. We no longer pray alone.
There’s another gift in the Prayerbook. As Orthodox Christians, we are all part of the same Body. We show and share that unity in the Church services, especially during the Divine Liturgy. The Prayerbook brings this unity into our homes or wherever an Orthodox Christian reads it. Our individual prayers are lifted to the Throne of God alongside the prayers that have been used by God’s people for centuries. We no longer pray alone.
THE RULE OF PRAYER
Many rules of prayer have developed in the history of the Church. At no place or time has there been a uniform rule. In 19th Century Russia, for example, the rule varied considerably from one monastery to another, though certain basic elements were found in all of them. Therefore, the term “Rule of Prayer” should never be understood as a strait jacket, regulating and limiting our communion with God.
Many guidelines for prayer have evolved throughout the history of the Church. There has never been a single uniform rule at any place or time. In 19th Century Russia, for instance, the rules differed significantly from one monastery to another, although some basic elements were present in all of them. Therefore, the term “Rule of Prayer” should never be seen as a straitjacket that confines and restricts our connection with God.
What the Rules do teach us is the importance [3] of regularity in our life of prayer. It is better to say a few prayers every day without fail than to say a great number of prayers on an irregular, impulsive basis. Those of us who are fortunate enough to have a spiritual father should consult him before establishing our own Rule. Those of us who do not, should begin with a modest Rule, increasing it only when it has become a regular and integral part of our lives.
What the Rules teach us is the importance [3] of consistency in our prayer life. It's better to say a few prayers every day without missing than to say a lot of prayers sporadically or on a whim. Those of us who are lucky enough to have a spiritual advisor should talk to them before creating our own Rule. Those who don’t have one should start with a simple Rule, only expanding it when it has become a regular and essential part of our lives.
THE TRANSLATION
We have attempted to use a contemporary but dignified form of the English language throughout this present translation. Wherever possible, existing translations of the Orthodox Church in America have been used. For example, the Prayers in Preparation for Holy Communion are taken from the official Divine Liturgy book (St. Tikhon’s Seminary Press, 1977) with very few changes. The Psalms, verses, troparia, and prayers not included in that edition have now been translated and included to complete the traditional order.
We have aimed to use a modern yet respectful version of the English language throughout this translation. Whenever possible, we've referenced existing translations from the Orthodox Church in America. For instance, the Prayers in Preparation for Holy Communion come from the official Divine Liturgy book (St. Tikhon’s Seminary Press, 1977) with minimal changes. The Psalms, verses, troparia, and prayers not found in that edition have now been translated and added to complete the traditional order.
The Psalms are taken from the Revised Standard Version of the Bible with changes made wherever significant differences with the Orthodox liturgical Psalter (based on the Septuagint) made it necessary. The numbering of [4] the Psalms follows the Septuagint throughout the Prayerbook. We are leaving to Biblical scholars the study of the merits of the various texts of the Holy Scriptures. Our object here is to provide the English-speaking Orthodox Christian with a Prayerbook as closely equivalent as possible to the Prayerbooks that Orthodox Christians of other nationalities have used for generations.

MORNING PRAYERS
Having awakened, arise from your bed without laziness and, having gathered your thoughts, make the Sign of the Cross, saying:
Having woken up, get out of bed without delay, and after gathering your thoughts, make the Sign of the Cross, saying:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Afterwards, stand in silence for a few moments until all your senses are calmed. At that point, make three prostrations, saying:
Afterwards, stand quietly for a few moments until all your senses are settled. At that point, do three bows, saying:
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, please have mercy on me, a sinner.
Then, begin the Morning Prayers with these words:
Then, start the Morning Prayers with these words:
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother and all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Your most pure Mother and all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.
Glory to You, our God, glory to You.
O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth Who art everywhere and fillest all things. Treasury of Blessings and Giver of Life: Come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every impurity, and [6] save our souls, O Good One.
O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth who is everywhere and fills all things. Treasure of Blessings and Giver of Life: Come and dwell in us, cleanse us from all impurity, and save our souls, O Good One.
Holy God! Holy Mighty! Holy Immortal! Have mercy on us. (3 times)
Holy God! Holy Mighty! Holy Immortal! Have mercy on us. (3x)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and for all ages. Amen.
O Most Holy Trinity! Have mercy on us! Lord, cleanse us from our sins! Master, pardon our transgressions! Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for Thy name’s sake.
O Most Holy Trinity! Have mercy on us! Lord, cleanse us from our sins! Master, forgive our wrongdoings! Holy One, come and heal our weaknesses for Your name's sake.
Lord, have mercy! (3 times)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and for all ages. Amen.
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Our Father, who is in heaven, may your name be treated as holy. Let your kingdom come. Let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Provide us with our daily bread today; and forgive us our wrongs, as we forgive those who wrong us; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

(If there's a priest, he adds the usual exclamation)
Having arisen from sleep, we fall down before Thee, O Blessed One, and sing to Thee, O Mighty One, the angelic hymn: Holy! Holy! Holy! art Thou, O God; through the Theotokos, have mercy on us.
Having woken up, we bow down before You, O Blessed One, and sing to You, O Mighty One, the angelic hymn: Holy! Holy! Holy! are You, O God; through the Mother of God, have mercy on us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Having raised me from my bed and from sleep, O Lord, enlighten my mind and heart, and open my lips that I may praise Thee, O Holy Trinity: Holy! Holy! Holy! art Thou, O God; through the Theotokos, have mercy on us.
Having raised me from my bed and from sleep, O Lord, enlighten my mind and heart, and open my lips that I may praise You, O Holy Trinity: Holy! Holy! Holy! are You, O God; through the Mother of God, have mercy on us.
Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Now and forever, for all eternity. Amen.
The Judge will come suddenly and the acts of every man will be revealed; but in the middle of the night we cry with fear: Holy! Holy! Holy! art Thou, O God; through the Theotokos, have mercy on us.
The Judge will arrive unexpectedly, and everyone’s actions will be laid bare; yet in the dead of night, we cry out in fear: Holy! Holy! Holy! are You, O God; through the Mother of God, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy! (12 times)
Lord, have mercy! (12 times)
Having risen from sleep, I thank Thee, [8] the Holy Trinity. In the abundance of Thy kindness and long patience, Thou hast not been angry with me for my laziness and sinfulness, nor hast Thou destroyed me in my lawlessness. Instead, in Thy usual love for mankind, Thou hast raised me as I lay in despair, that I might rise early and glorify Thy Reign. Enlighten now the eyes of my mind and open my lips, that I might learn of Thy words, understand Thy commandments, accomplish Thy will, hymn Thee in heart-felt confession and praise Thine all-holy name, the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Having woken up, I thank You, [8] the Holy Trinity. Because of Your kindness and patience, You haven’t been angry with me for my laziness and sinfulness, nor have You destroyed me in my wrongdoing. Instead, in Your usual love for humanity, You’ve lifted me up as I lay in despair, so that I can rise early and glorify Your Kingdom. Enlighten the eyes of my mind and open my lips, so that I may learn Your words, understand Your commandments, carry out Your will, and praise You with heartfelt confession and admiration for Your all-holy name, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and for all ages. Amen.
Come, let us worship God, our King!
Come, let’s worship God, our King!
Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and our God!
Come, let’s worship and bow down before Christ, our King and our God!
Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God!
Come, let’s worship and bow down before Christ Himself, our King and our God!
Psalm 50
Have mercy on me, O God,
Have mercy on me, God,
according to Thy great mercy;
according to Your great mercy;
according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies,
according to the many ways you show kindness,
blot out my transgressions.
erase my mistakes.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
Wash me clean from my wrongdoing,
and cleanse me from my sin!
and cleanse me from my sin!
For I know my transgressions,
For I know my sins,
and my sin is ever before me.
and my wrongdoing is always in front of me.
Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned,
Against You, You alone, have I sinned,
and done that which is evil in Thy sight,
and done what is wrong in Your eyes,
so that Thou art justified in Thy sentence
so that You are justified in Your judgment
and blameless in Thy judgment.
and blameless in Your judgment.
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
Behold, I was born in sin,
and in sins did my mother conceive me.
and my mother conceived me in sin.
Behold, Thou desirest truth in the inward being;
Behold, you want truth in the inner self;
therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.
therefore teach me wisdom in my inner self.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Purge me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Fill me with joy and gladness;
Fill me with joy and happiness;
let the bones which Thou hast broken rejoice.
let the bones that You have broken rejoice.
Hide Thy face from my sins,
Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
and wipe away all my sins.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and put a new and right spirit within me.
and put a new and right mindset within me.
Cast me not away from Thy presence,
Cast me not away from Your presence,
and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me.
Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation,
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.
and support me with a willing spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors Thy ways,
Then I will teach wrongdoers your ways,
and sinners will return to Thee.
and sinners will come back to You.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,
Deliver me from the guilt of murder, O God,
Thou God of my salvation,
God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of Thy deliverance.
and my tongue will sing out about Your rescue.
O Lord, open Thou my lips,
O Lord, open my mouth,
and my mouth shall show forth Thy praise.
and my mouth will proclaim Your praise.
For Thou hast no delight in sacrifice;
For You take no pleasure in sacrifice;
were I to give a burnt offering, Thou wouldst not be pleased.
If I were to make a burnt offering, You wouldn't be pleased.
The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit;
The sacrifice that pleases God is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise.
a broken and humble heart, O God, You will not reject.
Do good to Zion in Thy good pleasure;
Do good for Zion because it makes You happy;
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem,
rebuild Jerusalem's walls,
Then wilt Thou delight in right sacrifices,
Then you will take pleasure in the right sacrifices,
in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
then bulls will be offered on Thy altar.
then bulls will be offered on Your altar.
The Symbol of Faith
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth, and of everything that is seen and unseen.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light; true God of true God; begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father, by Whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from Heaven, [12] and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man. And He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried. And the third day He arose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; whose Kingdom shall have no end.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only Son, who was begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light; true God of true God; begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father, through whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from Heaven, [12] and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became human. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, suffered, and was buried. On the third day, He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into Heaven, and now sits at the right hand of the Father; He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead; His Kingdom will have no end.
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, Who proceeds from the Father; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spoke by the prophets. In one Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

In one Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
1st Prayer, by St. Macarius the Great.
O God, cleanse me a sinner, for I have done nothing good before Thee. Deliver me from the evil one, and may Thy will be [13] in me, that I might open my unworthy lips without condemnation and praise Thy holy name, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
O God, forgive me, a sinner, because I have done nothing good in Your sight. Free me from the evil one, and let Your will be in me, so that I can speak with unworthy lips without judgment and praise Your holy name, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever and for all eternity. Amen.
2nd Prayer, by St. Macarius the Great.
Having risen from sleep, I offer Thee, O Savior, the midnight song. Falling down, I cry to Thee: let me not fall asleep in the death of sin. Be gracious to me, Thou Who wast willingly crucified. Raise me quickly as I lie in laziness, and save me as I stand in prayer. After the night’s sleep, O Christ God, shine a sinless day on me and save me.
Having woken up, I offer You, O Savior, the midnight song. I fall to the ground and cry out to You: don’t let me fall asleep in the death of sin. Be merciful to me, You who were willingly crucified. Lift me up quickly as I lie in laziness, and save me as I stand in prayer. After the night’s sleep, O Christ God, grant me a sinless day and save me.
3rd Prayer, by St. Macarius the Great.
Having risen from sleep, I run to Thee, O Master, for Thou lovest mankind, and I rush to accomplish Thy work. Help me, I pray Thee, at all times and in all things. Deliver me from every evil thing of this world and from works of the devil. Save me, and lead me into Thine eternal Kingdom. Thou art my Maker, The Provider [14] and Giver of everything good. All my hope is in Thee and I glorify Thee, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Having woken up, I come to You, O Master, because You love humanity, and I hurry to do Your work. Please help me, I ask You, in all times and in everything. Rescue me from all the evil in this world and from the devil's works. Save me and guide me into Your eternal Kingdom. You are my Creator, the Provider [14] and Giver of everything good. All my hope is in You and I praise You, now and forever and for all ages. Amen.
4th Prayer, by St. Macarius the Great.
O Lord, through Thy abundant goodness and great generosity, Thou hast allowed me, Thy servant, to pass through the hours of this night untempted by any evil of the enemy. Grant also, O Master and Creator of all, that I might accomplish Thy will in Thy true light and with an illumined heart, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
O Lord, because of Your great goodness and generosity, You have allowed me, Your servant, to go through this night without being tempted by any evil from the enemy. Please, Master and Creator of all, help me to fulfill Your will in Your true light and with a clear heart, now and forever, and for all ages. Amen.
5th Prayer, by St. Macarius the Great.
O Lord, the Almighty God, Who acceptest the thrice-holy hymn from Thy heavenly hosts: accept this song of the night even from me, Thine unworthy servant. Grant that at every year and hour of my life I might glorify Thee, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
O Lord, Almighty God, who receives the thrice-holy hymn from Your heavenly hosts: accept this song of the night from me, Your unworthy servant. Grant that throughout every year and hour of my life, I may glorify You, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and for all ages. Amen.
6th Prayer, by St. Basil the Great.
Almighty Lord, the God of hosts and of [15] all flesh, Thou livest in the heights, yet lookest down on the humble, proving the hearts and emotions, clearly foreknowing the secrets of men. Thou art the Light without beginning, in Whom there is no variation nor shadow of change. O Immortal King, accept the prayers which we now offer Thee from defiled lips. Free us from the sins we have committed in deed, word or thought, knowingly and unknowingly. Cleanse us from all defilement of flesh and spirit. Grant us to pass through the entire night of this present life with a watchful heart and a sober mind, awaiting the coming of the bright and manifest day of Thine only-begotten Son, our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ, when the Judge of all will come with glory to reward each according to his deeds. May we not be found fallen and lazy, but alert and roused to action, prepared to enter into His joy and the divine chamber of His glory, where the voice of those who feast is unceasing and indescribable is the delight of those who behold the inexpressible [16] beauty of Thy countenance. For Thou art the true Light which enlightens and sanctifies all, and all creation hymns Thee unto ages of ages. Amen.
Almighty Lord, God of hosts and of all humanity, You live in the heights but look down on the humble, examining our hearts and feelings, clearly knowing the secrets of people. You are the Light without beginning, in Whom there is no change or shadow. O Immortal King, accept the prayers we offer You from our imperfect lips. Free us from the sins we've committed by action, word, or thought, both knowingly and unknowingly. Cleanse us from all impurities of body and spirit. Help us to get through the entire night of this earthly life with a watchful heart and a clear mind, waiting for the arrival of the bright and clear day of Your only-begotten Son, our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ, when the Judge of all will come in glory to reward each person according to their deeds. May we not be found lazy and fallen, but alert and motivated, ready to enter into His joy and the divine place of His glory, where the voices of those who celebrate never cease, and the joy of those who behold the indescribable beauty of Your presence is beyond words. For You are the true Light that enlightens and sanctifies all, and all creation praises You for ages upon ages. Amen.
7th Prayer, also by St. Basil.
We bless Thee, most high God and Lord of mercies, Who ever doest great and unfathomable things for us—glorious and awesome things without number. Thou givest us sleep for the repose of our frailty, relieving the labors of our over-burdened flesh. We thank Thee for not destroying us in our lawlessness. Instead, Thou hast shown Thy usual love for mankind, and raised us, as we lay in despair, to glorify Thy Reign. Therefore, we implore Thy boundless goodness: enlighten our thoughts and eyes, and awaken our minds from the heavy sleep of laziness. Open our lips and fill them with Thy praise, that we may unwaveringly hymn and confess Thee, the God glorified in all and by all, Father without beginning, with Thine only-begotten Son and Thine all-holy, [17] and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
We praise You, most high God and Lord of mercy, who always does great and unfathomable things for us—glorious and awe-inspiring things without end. You give us sleep to refresh our weakness, easing the burdens of our tired bodies. We thank You for not destroying us despite our wrongdoing. Instead, You have shown Your constant love for humanity and have lifted us from despair to glorify Your Kingdom. Therefore, we ask for Your endless goodness: brighten our minds and open our eyes, and wake us from the deep sleep of laziness. Open our lips and fill them with Your praise so we may consistently sing and acknowledge You, the God glorified in everything and by all, Father without beginning, with Your only-begotten Son and Your all-holy, [17] and life-giving Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
8th Prayer. A Midnight Song to the Most Holy Theotokos.
I hymn your Grace, O Lady,
I praise you, dear Lady,
and pray that you grace my mind.
and hope that you bless my thoughts.
Teach me to walk correctly
Teach me proper walking form
on the path of Christ’s commandments.
on the path of Christ’s teachings.
Strengthen me to watch in song,
Strengthen me to keep watch in song,
dispelling the despair of sleep.
dispelling the gloom of sleep.
I am bound by fetters of sin,
I am trapped by the chains of sin,
free me by your prayers, O Bride of God!
free me with your prayers, O Bride of God!
Keep me in the night and in the day,
Keep me in the night and in the day,
delivering me from warring enemies.
delivering me from hostile foes.
As you bore the life-giving God,
As you brought forth the life-giving God,
give life to me, who am wounded by passions.
give life to me, who am hurt by my desires.
As you bore the unsetting Light,
As you carried the unending Light,
enlighten my blinded soul.
enlighten my blind soul.
O wondrous palace of the Master,
O marvelous palace of the Master,
make me a home of the divine Spirit.
make me a home of the divine Spirit.
As you bore the Physician,
As you annoyed the doctor,
heal my soul of its passion-filled years.
heal my soul from its years filled with passion.
I am tossed in the tempest of life:
I am caught in the storm of life:
direct me to the path of repentance.
direct me to the path of making amends.
Deliver me from the eternal flame,
Deliver me from the eternal flame,
from the evil worm, and from hell.
from the evil worm, and from hell.
Make me not a joy for demons,
Make me not a source of joy for demons,
though I am guilty of many sins.
though I have committed many sins.
Make me new, most undefiled one,
Make me a new, pure one.
for I am aged by senseless sins.
for I am worn out by foolish sins.
Estrange me from all torments,
Free me from all pain,
and pray for me to the Master of all.
and pray for me to the Master of everything.
Grant that, with all the saints,
Grant that, along with all the saints,
I may inherit the joys of heaven.
I might gain the pleasures of heaven.
Hear, most holy Virgin,
Hear, most sacred Virgin,
the voice of your useless servant.
the voice of your worthless servant.
Grant me a torrent of tears, most pure one,
Grant me a flood of tears, most pure one,
to wash the filth of my soul.
to cleanse the dirt from my soul.
The groans of my heart I bring you unceasingly:
The groans of my heart I bring you continuously:
open your heart, O Lady!
open your heart, O Lady!
Accept my prayerful service,
Accept my heartfelt service,
and take it to the compassionate God.
and bring it to the loving God.
You who are far higher than the angels,
You who are much greater than the angels,
raise me above this world’s confusion.
raise me above this world's chaos.
O light-bearing heavenly cloud,
O light-bringing heavenly cloud,
direct spiritual grace into me.
direct spiritual energy into me.
I raise in praise, all-undefiled one,
I lift my voice in praise, all-pure one,
hands and lips defiled by sin.
hands and lips stained by wrongdoing.
Deliver me from soul-corrupting harm,
Deliver me from harmful influences,
praying fervently to Christ,
praying passionately to Christ,
To Whom glory and worship are due,
To Whom glory and praise are due,
now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
now and forever, throughout all ages. Amen.
9th Prayer, to Our Lord Jesus Christ.
My most merciful and all-merciful God, O Lord Jesus Christ! In Thy great love, Thou didst come down and become flesh in order to save all. Again, I pray Thee, save me by Grace! If Thou shouldst save me because of my deeds, it would not be a gift, but merely a duty. Truly, Thou aboundest in graciousness and art inexpressibly merciful! Thou hast said, O my Christ: “He who believes in me shall live and never see death”. If faith in Thee saves the desperate, behold: I believe! Save me, for Thou art my God and my Maker. May my faith replace my deeds, O my God, for Thou wilt find no deeds to [20] justify me. May my faith be sufficient for all. May it answer for me; may it justify me; may it make me a partaker of Thine eternal glory; and may Satan not seize me, O Word, and boast that He has torn me from Thy hand and fold. O Christ my Savior: save me whether I want it or not! Come quickly, hurry, for I perish! Thou art my God from my mother’s womb. Grant, O Lord, that I may now love Thee as once I loved sin, and that I may labor for Thee without laziness as once I labored for Satan the deceiver. Even more, I will labor for Thee, my Lord and God Jesus Christ, all the days of my life, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
My most merciful and compassionate God, O Lord Jesus Christ! In Your great love, You came down and became human to save everyone. Again, I ask You, save me by Your Grace! If You were to save me based on my actions, it wouldn’t be a gift, but just an obligation. Truly, You are overflowing with kindness and are indescribably merciful! You have said, O my Christ: “He who believes in me will live and never see death.” If faith in You saves the desperate, then look: I believe! Save me, for You are my God and my Creator. May my faith replace my actions, O my God, for You will find no actions to justify me. May my faith be enough for all. May it speak for me; may it justify me; may it allow me to share in Your eternal glory; and may Satan not take me, O Word, and claim that he has ripped me from Your hand and fold. O Christ my Savior: save me whether I want it or not! Come quickly, hurry, for I am perishing! You have been my God since my mother’s womb. Grant, O Lord, that I may now love You as I once loved sin, and that I may work for You without laziness as I once worked for Satan the deceiver. Even more, I will work for You, my Lord and God Jesus Christ, all the days of my life, now and forever and ever. Amen.
10th Prayer, to the Angel, the guardian of human life.
O Holy Angel, who stand by my wretched soul and my passionate life: do not abandon me, a sinner, neither depart from me because of my lack of self-control. Leave no room for the evil demon to gain control of me through the violence of this mortal body. Strengthen my weak and feeble [21] hand, and instruct me in the path of salvation. O holy Angel of God, the guardian and protector of my wretched soul and body: forgive all the sorrows I have caused you, every day of my life. If I have sinned in this past night, protect me during this day. Keep me from every adverse temptation, that I may not anger God by any sin. Pray to the Lord for me, that He may establish me in His fear and make me, His servant, worthy of His goodness. Amen.

O holy Angel of God, the guardian and protector of my troubled soul and body: forgive all the sorrows I have caused you every day of my life. COMMEMORATION OF THE LIVING AND THE DEAD
To be read daily by every monastic and pious Christian at the end of his rule of prayer.
To be read every day by every monk and devout Christian at the end of their prayer routine.
Remember, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, Thine eternal mercies and compassion, for whose sake Thou didst become man and willingly endured crucifixion and death for the salvation of those who rightly believe in Thee. Thou didst rise from the dead and ascend into Heaven and sittest at the right hand of God the Father, looking down on the humble petitions of those who call upon Thee with their whole heart. Bow down Thine ear and hear the prayer which I, Thy useless servant, offer Thee for all Thy people as a spiritual fragrance. First of all, remember Thy Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church which Thou didst obtain through Thy precious Blood. Establish, strengthen, broaden, and multiply her. Give her peace and keep her [26] eternally unassailable by the gates of hell. Calm the quarrels of the churches, put out the arrogance of the heathen, and swiftly destroy and uproot the rebellions of heresies, turning them into nothing through the power of Thy Holy Spirit.

Psalm 50
Have mercy on me, O God,
Have mercy on me, God,
according to Thy great mercy;
according to your great mercy;
according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies,
according to the many ways You show kindness,
blot out my transgressions.
erase my mistakes.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
Wash me completely from my wrongdoing,
and cleanse me from my sin!
and cleanse me from my sin!
For I know my transgressions,
For I know my wrongs,
and my sin is ever before me.
and my wrongdoing is always in front of me.
Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned,
Against You, You alone, have I sinned,
and done that which is evil in Thy sight,
and done what is wrong in Your eyes,
so that Thou art justified in Thy sentence
so that You are justified in Your sentence
and blameless in Thy judgment.
and blameless in Your judgment.
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
Behold, I was born into sin,
and in sins did my mother conceive me.
and in sin my mother conceived me.
Behold, Thou desirest truth in the inward being;
Behold, You desire truth in the inner self;
therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.
therefore teach me wisdom in my innermost heart.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Purge me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Fill me with joy and gladness;
Fill me with joy and happiness;
let the bones which Thou hast broken rejoice.
let the bones that You have broken rejoice.
Hide Thy face from my sins,
Hide Your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
and erase all my mistakes.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and put a new and right spirit within me.
and put a new and true spirit within me.
Cast me not away from Thy presence,
Cast me not away from Your presence,
and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
and don't take Your Holy Spirit away from me.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,
Deliver me from guilt, O God,
Thou God of my salvation,
God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of Thy deliverance.
and my mouth will openly praise Your rescue.
O Lord, open Thou my lips,
God, open my lips,
and my mouth shall show forth Thy praise.
and my mouth will proclaim Your praise.
For Thou hast no delight in sacrifice;
For you take no pleasure in sacrifice;
were I to give a burnt offering, Thou wouldst not be pleased.
If I were to offer a burnt sacrifice, You wouldn’t be happy.
The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit;
The sacrifice that God values is a humble spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God,
a broken and humble heart, O God,
Thou wilt not despise.
You will not despise.
Do good to Zion in Thy good pleasure;
Do good for Zion in Your kindness;
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem,
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem,
Then wilt Thou delight in right sacrifices,
Then you will take pleasure in the right sacrifices,
in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
then bulls will be offered on Thy altar.
then bulls will be offered on Your altar.
Psalm 69
O God, attend to helping me!
Oh God, please help me!
O Lord, make haste to help me!
O Lord, please hurry and help me!
Let them be put to shame and confusion
Let them be shamed and confused.
who seek my life!
who want to kill me!
Let them be turned back and brought to dishonor
Let them be turned away and brought to shame.
who desire my hurt!
who want to hurt me!
Let them be turned back in their shame
Let them retreat in their shame
who jeer saying: “Well done! Well done!”
who mockingly say: “Great job! Great job!”
May all who seek Thee
May all who seek You
rejoice and be glad in Thee!
rejoice and be glad in You!
May those who love Thy salvation
May those who love Your salvation
say evermore, “God is great!”
say forever, “God is great!”
But I am poor and needy;
But I am poor and in need;
hasten to me, O God!
hurry to me, O God!
Thou art my help and my deliverer;
You are my helper and my rescuer;
O Lord, do not tarry!
Oh Lord, don't delay!
Psalm 142
Hear my prayer, O Lord;
Hear my prayer, Lord;
give ear to my supplications!
listen to my requests!
In Thy faithfulness answer me,
In Your faithfulness, answer me,
in Thy righteousness!
in Your righteousness!
Enter not into judgment with Thy servant;
Enter not into judgment with Your servant;
for no man living is righteous before Thee.
for no man alive is righteous before You.
For the enemy has pursued my soul;
For the enemy has chased after my soul;
he has crushed my life to the ground;
he has destroyed my life completely;
he has made me sit in darkness like those long dead.
he has made me sit in darkness like those long gone.
Therefore my spirit faints within me;
Therefore, my spirit weakens inside me;
my heart within me is appalled.
my heart within me is horrified.
I remember the days of old,
I remember the good old days,
I meditate on all Thou hast done;
I think about everything you've done;
I muse on what Thy hands have wrought.
I think about what Your hands have created.
I stretch out my hands to Thee;
I reach out my hands to You;
my soul thirsts for Thee like a parched land.
my soul thirsts for You like a dry land.
Make haste to answer me, O Lord!
Make haste to answer me, O Lord!
My spirit fails!
I'm feeling defeated!
Hide not Thy face from me,
Hide not Your face from me,
lest I be like those who go down to the Pit.
lest I be like those who go down to the Pit.
Let me hear in the morning of Thy steadfast love,
Let me hear about Your constant love in the morning,
for in Thee I put my trust.
for I put my trust in You.
Teach me the way I should go,
Teach me how I should proceed,
for to Thee I lift up my soul.
for to You I lift up my soul.
Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies!
Deliver me, Lord, from my enemies!
I have fled to Thee for refuge!
I have run to You for safety!
Teach me to do Thy will,
Teach me to follow Your will,
for Thou art my God!
for You are my God!
Let Thy Good Spirit lead me
Let your good spirit lead me
on a level path!
on a flat path!
For Thy name’s sake, O Lord, give me life!
For your name's sake, O Lord, give me life!
in Thy righteousness bring my soul out of trouble!
In Your righteousness, save my soul from trouble!
And in Thy steadfast love cut off my enemies
And in Your unwavering love, eliminate my enemies.
and destroy all those who afflict my soul,
and eliminate everyone who torments my spirit,
for I am Thy servant.
for I am Your servant.

The Symbol of Faith
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and everything that is seen and unseen.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light; true God of true God; begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and [49] was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man. And He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried. And the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; whose Kingdom shall have no end.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, born of the Father before all time. Light of Light; true God of true God; born, not created; of one essence with the Father, through whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was made human by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, suffered, and was buried. On the third day, He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead; His Kingdom will never end.

Amen.

Monday Evening
The just man is remembered with praises. For you, O Forerunner, the witness of the Lord is sufficient. You truly showed yourself more honorable than the prophets, for you were made worthy to baptize in the streams the One Whom you proclaimed. Having gladly suffered for the truth, you proclaimed to those in Hades the true God Who has revealed Himself in the flesh, taken away the sin of the world and given us great mercy.

A Prayer of St. Basil the Great
O Christ God, Who art worshipped and glorified at every place and time; Who art long-suffering, most merciful and compassionate; Who lovest the righteous and art merciful to sinners; Who callest all to salvation with the promise of good things to come: receive, Lord, the prayers we now offer, and direct our lives in the way of Thy commandments. Sanctify our souls, cleanse our bodies, correct our thoughts, purify our minds and deliver us from all affliction, evil and illness. Surround us with Thy holy angels, that [62] guarded and instructed by their forces, we may reach unity of faith and the understanding of Thine unapproachable glory: for blessed art Thou unto ages of ages. Amen.
O Christ God, who is worshipped and glorified everywhere and at all times; who is patient, most merciful, and compassionate; who loves the righteous and shows mercy to sinners; who calls everyone to salvation with the promise of good things to come: receive, Lord, the prayers we offer now and guide our lives according to Your commandments. Sanctify our souls, cleanse our bodies, correct our thoughts, purify our minds, and free us from all suffering, evil, and illness. Surround us with Your holy angels, so that, protected and guided by their presence, we may achieve unity of faith and understand Your incomprehensible glory; for You are blessed forever and ever. Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos
by Monk Paul
O undefiled, immaculate, incorrupt and most pure Lady, the pure Virgin Bride of God! Through your most glorious birth-giving, you united God the Word to mankind and joined our fallen human nature to the heavenly. You are the only hope of the hopeless, the aid of the embattled a ready help to those who run to you and a refuge for all Christians. Do not turn away from me who am sinful and vile, even though I have made myself totally useless through defiled thoughts, words and deeds, and my mind has become enslaved to the lazy pleasures of this life. As Mother of the God Who loves mankind, have pity on me, a prodigal sinner, in that same love for mankind. Receive the prayer I offer to you with defiled lips and pray to your Son, our Master and Lord, with your maternal boldness. May He open even to me the goodness of His deep love for mankind. [65] May He overlook my countless transgressions, turn me to repentance and make me an experienced accomplisher of His commandments. Stand by me always in your mercy, compassion and love of good. Be my fervent intercessor and help in this life, driving off the assaults of enemies and guiding me to salvation. Guard my wretched soul at the time of my death, driving away the dark forms of the evil demons. Deliver me from eternal torments at the Day of Judgment and reveal me an heir of the inexpressible glory of your Son and our God. May I receive this, my Lady most glorious Theotokos, through your help and intercession: through the Grace and love for mankind of your only-begotten Son, our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ, to Whom belong all glory, honor and worship, with His Father Who is without beginning, and His most holy, good and life-creating Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
O undefiled, pure, and most holy Lady, the Virgin Bride of God! Through your glorious birth, you brought God the Word into the world and connected our fallen human nature with the divine. You are the only hope for the hopeless, the support for the struggling, a ready help for those who seek you, and a refuge for all Christians. Do not turn away from me, a sinful and wretched person, even though I have made myself worthless through impure thoughts, words, and actions, and my mind has become enslaved to the lazy pleasures of this life. As the Mother of the God Who loves humanity, have mercy on me, a wayward sinner, in that same love. Accept my prayer offered with unclean lips and intercede for me with your Son, our Master and Lord, with your maternal confidence. May He open to me the depths of His love for humanity. [65] May He overlook my countless sins, lead me to repentance, and help me truly follow His commandments. Always stand by me with your mercy, compassion, and love for good. Be my passionate advocate and support in this life, protecting me from the attacks of enemies and guiding me towards salvation. Guard my wretched soul at the hour of my death, driving away the dark forms of evil demons. Save me from everlasting torment on the Day of Judgment and let me inherit the unimaginable glory of your Son and our God. May I receive this, my most glorious Lady Theotokos, through your help and intercession: through the grace and love of your only-begotten Son, our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ, to Whom belong all glory, honor, and worship, with His Father Who is eternal, and His most holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and forever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
A Prayer to Our Lord Jesus Christ
by Monk Antiochus
As we prepare for sleep, Master, grant rest to our bodies and souls. Keep us from the dark sleep of sin and from every dark and passionate pleasure of the night. Still the impulses of passions and put out the flaming arrows which the Evil One looses deceitfully against us. Still the rebellions of the flesh and put to sleep our worldly and material reasonings. O God, grant us an alert mind, chaste thoughts, a sober heart, and a light sleep, free of every satanic dream. Raise us at the time of prayer confirmed in Thy commandments—the memory of Thy judgments firmly in us. Grant that we may glorify Thee throughout this night, singing, blessing and glorifying Thy most honorable and majestic name: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
As we get ready for sleep, Master, give rest to our bodies and souls. Keep us away from the dark sleep of sin and from all the corrupt and intense pleasures of the night. Calm the urges of our passions and extinguish the fiery arrows that the Evil One deceitfully fires at us. Calm our fleshly rebellions and quiet our worldly and material thoughts. O God, give us a focused mind, pure thoughts, a sober heart, and a peaceful sleep, free from any satanic dreams. Wake us during prayer, strengthened in Your commandments—with the memory of Your judgments firmly within us. Help us to honor You throughout this night, singing, blessing, and glorifying Your most honorable and majestic name: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and always, and forever. Amen.

1st Prayer, to God the Father,
by St. Macarius the Great
O Eternal God and King of all Creation, Who hast granted me to reach this hour: forgive the sins I have committed this day in deed, word and thought. Cleanse, O Lord, my humble soul from every defilement of flesh and spirit. Grant, Lord, that I may pass through this night in peace. When I rise from my humble bed, may I please Thy most holy Name all the days of my life and trample under foot the physical and bodiless enemies that wage [71] war against me. Deliver me, Lord, from vain thoughts which defile me and from evil lusts. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
O Eternal God and King of all Creation, Who has allowed me to reach this moment: forgive the sins I have committed today in actions, words, and thoughts. Cleanse, O Lord, my humble soul from every impurity of body and spirit. Grant, Lord, that I may get through this night in peace. When I get up from my humble bed, may I honor Your most holy Name every day of my life and overcome the physical and spiritual enemies that wage [71] war against me. Deliver me, Lord, from vain thoughts that taint me and from evil desires. For Yours is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and always, forever and ever. Amen.
2nd Prayer, to Our Lord Jesus Christ
by St. Antiochus
Almighty Word of the Father, Jesus Christ, Who art perfect: never abandon me, Thy servant, for Thy great mercy’s sake, but ever abide in me. O Jesus, Good Shepherd of Thy sheep, do not deliver me to the serpent’s rebellion! Do not abandon me to Satan’s will, for the seed of corruption is within me! Instead, O Lord God the Adored, Holy King Jesus Christ, keep me while I sleep by Thy unwavering Light, Thy Holy Spirit by Whom Thou didst sanctify Thy disciples. O Lord, grant to me, Thine unworthy servant, salvation on my bed. Enlighten my mind with the light of understanding Thy Holy Gospel; my soul with the love of Thy Cross; my heart with the purity of Thy Word; my body [72] with Thy passionless Passion. Keep my thoughts with Thy humility and raise me at the right time to glorify Thee. For Thou art most glorified, with Thine unoriginate Father and Thy most Holy Spirit forever. Amen.
Almighty Word of the Father, Jesus Christ, who is perfect: never leave me, your servant, for the sake of your great mercy, but always stay with me. Instead, O Lord God the Adored, Holy King Jesus Christ, protect me as I sleep with your unwavering Light, your Holy Spirit, through whom you sanctified your disciples. 3rd Prayer, to the Holy Spirit
O Lord, the Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth: have compassion and mercy on me, Thy sinful servant! Absolve me, who am unworthy. Forgive all the sins I have committed this day both in my humanity and my inhumanity, behaving worse than beasts in sins voluntary and involuntary, known and unknown, from my youth, from evil suggestions, haste and despondency. If I have sworn by Thy name or blasphemed it in thought; if I have reproached anyone or become angered by something; or slandered or saddened anyone in my anger; or have lied, or slept unnecessarily; or a beggar has come to me and I have despised him; or have saddened my [73] brother or quarrelled with him; or have judged someone; or have allowed myself to become haughty, proud or angry; or, when standing in prayer, my mind has been shaken by the wickedness of this world; or have entertained depraved thoughts; or have over-eaten, over-drunk or laughed mindlessly; or have had evil thoughts or seen the beauty of someone and been wounded by it in my heart; or have spoken inappropriately; or have laughed at my brother’s sins when my own transgressions are countless; or have been indifferent to prayer; or have done any other evil that I can not remember—for I have done all this and more: have mercy, O Master, my Creator, on me, Thy despondent and unworthy servant! Absolve, remit and forgive me, in Thy goodness and love for mankind, that I, who am prodigal, sinful and wretched, may lie down in peace and find sleep and rest. May I worship, hymn and praise Thy most honorable Name, with the Father and His only-begotten Son, now and ever [74] and unto ages of ages. Amen.
O Lord, the Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth: have compassion and mercy on me, Your sinful servant! Forgive me, for I am unworthy. Pardon all the sins I have committed today, both in my humanity and my inhumanity, acting worse than animals in sins voluntary and involuntary, known and unknown, from my youth, due to evil thoughts, haste, and despair. If I have sworn by Your name or abused it in thought; if I have insulted anyone or become angry about something; or slandered or hurt anyone in my anger; or have lied, or wasted time; or a beggar has come to me and I have looked down on him; or have upset my [73] brother or fought with him; or have judged someone; or let myself become haughty, proud, or angry; or, when praying, my mind has been disturbed by the evils of this world; or have harbored corrupt thoughts; or have overeaten, over-drunk or laughed thoughtlessly; or have had bad thoughts or admired someone’s beauty and felt envy in my heart; or have spoken inappropriately; or have laughed at my brother’s sins while my own transgressions are countless; or have been indifferent to prayer; or have done any other evil that I cannot remember—for I have done all this and more: have mercy, O Master, my Creator, on me, Your despondent and unworthy servant! Forgive, erase, and pardon me, in Your goodness and love for humanity, so that I, who am wasteful, sinful, and wretched, may lie down in peace and find sleep and rest. May I worship, sing, and praise Your most honorable Name, with the Father and His only-begotten Son, now and ever [74] and for ages of ages. Amen.
4th Prayer, of St. Macarius the Great
What can I bring Thee? With what can I repay Thee, O Immortal King, the bestower of great gifts, O generous Lord, the Lover of mankind? Though I have been lazy in pleasing Thee and have done no good, Thou hast brought me to the end of this day, ordering the conversion and salvation of my soul. Be merciful towards me, a sinner devoid of any good deeds. Raise up my fallen soul, defiled by immeasurable sins. Remove from me every evil thought of this visible life. Forgive, O only Sinless One, all the sins I have committed against Thee this day, in knowledge or in ignorance, in word, deed or thought or through any of my senses. Covering me Thyself, protect me from every assault of the enemy through Thy divine Power, inexpressible Love for mankind and Strength. Cleanse, O God, cleanse the multitude of my sins. Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me from the snares [75] of the Evil One, and save my passionate soul. When Thou comest in glory, illumine me with the light of Thy countenance. May I fall uncondemned into a sleep free of apparitions. Keep the thoughts of Thy servant untroubled, and keep far from me every satanic activity. Enlighten the reason-endowed eyes of my heart, that I fall not into the sleep of death. Send to me an angel of peace, the guide and guardian of my soul and body, that he may deliver me from my enemies. Then, when I arise from my bed, I shall offer Thee prayers of thanksgiving. Yea, Lord, hear me, Thy sinful servant, impoverished in will and conscience. Grant that I may learn from Thy words when I arise. Cause Thy Angels to drive demonic despondency far from me. May I bless Thy holy Name and praise and glorify Mary, the most pure Theotokos, whom Thou hast given to us sinners as an intercessor. Receive her as she prays for us. We know that she imitates Thy love for mankind and never ceases to pray. Through her intercessions, [76] the Sign of the Precious Cross and for the sake of all Thy saints, O Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on my wretched soul, for Thou art Holy and most glorified unto ages of ages. Amen.

Please, O Lord, deliver me from the traps of the Evil One and save my troubled soul. When You come in glory, shine upon me with the light of Your presence. May I fall into a sleep that’s free of nightmares. Keep my thoughts at peace and drive away every satanic influence. Enlighten the eyes of my heart so I do not succumb to the sleep of death. Send me a peace-filled angel, the guide and protector of my soul and body, to deliver me from my enemies. Then, when I get up from my bed, I will offer You prayers of thanksgiving. O Lord Jesus Christ the Son of God, for the sake of Thy most honorable Mother, Thy bodiless Angels, Thy Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist, the Divinely inspired Apostles, the bright and victorious Martyrs, the venerable and God-bearing Fathers and all the Saints: deliver me from this present assault of the devil. Yea, O Lord my Creator, Who desirest not the death of the sinner, but that he should [80] return to Thee and live: grant repentance to me, wretched and unworthy. Snatch me from the jaws of the consuming serpent, its mouth opened to devour me and take me down to hell alive. Yea, my Lord and my Comfort, Who didst put on corruptible flesh for my wretched sake: deliver me from wretchedness and bring comfort to my wretched soul. Implant in my heart the accomplishment of Thy precepts, the abandonment of evil deeds and the obtainment of Thy blessings. In Thee, O Lord, have I trusted: save me!
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of Your honorable Mother, Your angelic beings, Your Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist, the inspired Apostles, the shining and victorious Martyrs, the revered and God-bearing Fathers, and all the Saints: deliver me from this current attack of the devil. Yes, O Lord my Creator, Who does not wish for the death of the sinner, but that he should return to You and live: grant repentance to me, miserable and unworthy. Rescue me from the jaws of the consuming serpent, its mouth open to devour me and drag me down to hell alive. Yes, my Lord and my Comfort, Who took on mortal flesh for my sake: deliver me from misery and bring comfort to my suffering soul. Instill in my heart the fulfillment of Your commandments, the abandonment of evil actions, and the attainment of Your blessings. In You, O Lord, I have placed my trust: save me!
9th Prayer, to the Most Holy Theotokos,
by Peter, the Studite monk
Before you, the Most Pure Mother of God, I who am wretched fall down and pray: you know, O Queen that I sin constantly and anger your Son and my God. No matter how often I repent, I appear a liar before God, and repent with trembling. Can God shake me and I do those same things again an hour later? Knowing this, my Mistress, O Lady Theotokos, I [81] pray: have mercy on me, strengthen me and grant that I may do good. You know, my Lady Theotokos, that I abhor my evil deeds and love the Law of my God with all my mind. But, most pure Lady, I do not know how I can love what I abhor and turn away from what is good. Do not allow my will to be done, Most Pure One, for it is not appropriate. May the will of your Son and my God be done. May He save and enlighten me, and give me the Grace of His Holy Spirit, in order that I might stop sinning from this time on and live the remainder of my life in obedience to your Son, to Whom belongs all glory, honor and majesty, with His Father Who is without beginning, and His Most Holy, good and life-creating Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

A Prayer of St. John of Damascus,
said pointing at the bed
O Master Who lovest mankind, is this bed to be my coffin? Or wilt Thou enlighten my wretched soul with another day? Behold: before me lies the coffin, before me stands death! O Lord, I fear Thy judgment and the endless torments, yet I cease not to do evil. I always anger Thee, my Lord God, and Thy most pure Mother, all the heavenly hosts and my holy Guardian Angel. I know, Lord, that I am unworthy of Thy love for mankind. Indeed, I am worthy of every condemnation and torment. Yet, Lord, save me whether I want it or not! When Thou savest the [85] righteous, it is no great thing. When Thou hast mercy on the pure, it causes no wonder, for they are worthy of Thy mercy. Astound us with Thy mercy towards me, a sinner. Reveal in this manner Thy love for mankind, that my wickedness may not overcome Thine inexpressible goodness and mercy. As Thou wilt, order my life!
O Master who loves humanity, is this bed to be my coffin? Or will You enlighten my wretched soul with another day? Look: before me lies the coffin, and before me stands death! O Lord, I fear Your judgment and the endless torments, yet I continue to do evil. I always anger You, my Lord God, and Your most pure Mother, all the heavenly hosts, and my holy Guardian Angel. I know, Lord, that I am unworthy of Your love for mankind. In fact, I deserve every condemnation and torment. Yet, Lord, save me whether I want it or not! When You save the righteous, it’s no big deal. When You have mercy on the pure, it’s not surprising, for they are worthy of Your mercy. Surprise us with Your mercy towards me, a sinner. Show Your love for humanity in this way, so that my wickedness does not overcome Your inexpressible goodness and mercy. As You will, arrange my life!
Wishing to lie down on your bed, say:
Wishing to lie down on your bed, say:
Enlighten my eyes, Christ—God, that I fall not asleep to death and that my enemy may not say of me: I have overcome him.
Enlighten my eyes, Christ—God, so I don’t fall asleep in death and so my enemy can’t say of me: I have overcome him.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Be the Helper of my soul, O God, for I walk among many snares. Deliver me from them, O Good One, and save me, for Thou lovest mankind.
Be the helper of my soul, God, for I walk among many traps. Free me from them, O Good One, and save me, for You love humanity.
Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Now and forever, throughout all generations. Amen.
Let us ever hymn the most glorious Mother of God, who is holier than the Holy Angels. With heart and lips let us [86] confess that she is the Theotokos, for she truly bore God incarnate for us and prays ceaselessly for our souls.
Let us always praise the most glorious Mother of God, who is more holy than the Holy Angels. With our hearts and voices, let us acknowledge that she is the Theotokos, for she truly gave birth to God in human form for us and continuously prays for our souls.
Kiss your Cross. Then, make the Sign of the Cross over your bed, from head to foot and either side, saying the Prayer to the Precious Cross:
Kiss your Cross. Then, make the Sign of the Cross over your bed, from head to foot and on either side, saying the Prayer to the Precious Cross:
Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered! Let those who hate Him flee from before His face! As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish. As wax melts before the fire, so let sinners perish before the face of those who love God and sign themselves with the Sign of the Cross and say joyfully: rejoice, most precious and life-creating Cross of the Lord, which chases demons away through the power of our Lord Jesus Christ Who was nailed to you, descended into hell and, having trampled down the power of the devil, gave to us His precious Cross for the routing of all enemies. Help me for ever, most precious and life-creating Cross of the Lord, with the Holy Lady Virgin Theotokos and all the Saints. Amen.
Let God rise up and let His enemies scatter! Let those who hate Him run away from His presence! Just like smoke disappears, so let them disappear. As wax melts in the fire, so let sinners be wiped out before those who love God, mark themselves with the Sign of the Cross, and joyfully proclaim: rejoice, most precious and life-giving Cross of the Lord, which drives away demons through the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who was nailed to you, descended into hell, and, after defeating the devil, gave us His precious Cross to defeat all enemies. Help me forever, most precious and life-giving Cross of the Lord, along with the Holy Lady Virgin Theotokos and all the Saints. Amen.
Remit, absolve and forgive, O God, all [87] our voluntary and involuntary sins, in word and in deed, in knowledge and in ignorance, in the day or in the night, in mind and in thought! Forgive us everything, for Thou art good and lovest mankind.
Remit, absolve, and forgive, O God, all [87] our intentional and unintentional sins, in words and actions, in what we know and what we don’t, during the day or at night, in our minds and in our thoughts! Forgive us everything, for You are good and love humanity.
O Lord Who lovest mankind, forgive those who hate and wrong us. Do good to those who do good. Grant to our brethren and relatives all petitions for salvation and eternal life. Visit the afflicted and heal them. Guide those at sea. Travel with travellers. Join the Orthodox Christians in battle. Grant remission of sins to those who serve us and are kind to us. Have mercy, according to Thy great mercy, on those who have asked us to pray for them, unworthy though we be. Remember, Lord, our fathers and brethren who have fallen asleep before us, and give them rest under the light of Thy countenance. Remember, Lord, our captive brethren, and deliver them from every misfortune. Remember, Lord, those who bear fruit and do good works in Thy holy churches, and grant them all their petitions for salvation and [88] eternal life. Remember us also, Lord, Thy humble, sinful, and unworthy servants. Enlighten our minds with the light of Thy reason and direct us onto the path of Thy commandments, through the prayers of our most Pure Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary and all Thy Saints, for blessed art Thou unto ages of ages. Amen.

Enlighten our minds with the light of Your wisdom and guide us along the path of Your commandments, through the prayers of our most Pure Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary and all Your Saints, for blessed are You forever and ever. Amen.

THE THREE CANONS
A tradition has developed in the Church of reading three (sometimes four) Canons the evening before receiving Holy Communion. Many monastic Rules of Prayer prescribe this reading daily. Many Canons have been composed over the years, and certain Canons are prescribed for specific days of the week. We have not attempted to publish a large selection of Canons in the limited space of what is, essentially, a “pocket” Prayer Book. We have provided three of the most commonly used Canons and printed them in the order in which they are traditionally read. This order can also serve as a model for combining other Canons. If these Canons are not read during Compline (p. 37), they are preceded by the Opening Prayers and Psalm 50 (pp. 37 to 41).

How dare I partake of Thy Holiness in my unworthiness? Even if I dare to approach Thee with the worthy, my garment accuses me, for it is not a wedding-garment, and I secure the condemnation of my most sinful soul. Cleanse, O Lord, the defilement of my soul and save me, for Thou lovest mankind.
How can I have the nerve to come to You in my unworthiness? Even if I try to approach You like the worthy do, my clothing shows my guilt because it’s not fit for a wedding, and I end up condemning my sinful soul. Cleanse me, Lord, of my soul's impurities and save me, because You love all people.
Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

1st Prayer, of Saint Basil the Great.
O Lord and Master, Jesus Christ our God, the Fountain of life and immortality, the Creator of everything visible and invisible, the eternal and everlasting Son of the eternal Father: Thou hast come in these latter days because of the abundance of Thy goodness. Thou hast put on our human flesh and wast crucified and buried for us thankless and graceless men, and through Thine own blood Thou hast renewed our human nature which is corrupted by sin. And now, O Immortal King, accept the repentance of me a sinner, and incline Thine ear to me and listen to my words:
O Lord and Master, Jesus Christ our God, the Source of life and immortality, the Creator of everything we see and can’t see, the eternal Son of the eternal Father: You have come in these later days because of Your great goodness. You took on our human form and were crucified and buried for us, ungrateful and undeserving people. Through Your own blood, You have restored our human nature, which has been damaged by sin. And now, O Immortal King, please accept my repentance as a sinner, and incline Your ear to me and listen to my words:
I have sinned, O Lord, I have sinned before heaven and before Thy face, and I am not worthy to look upon the height of Thy Glory.
I have sinned, O Lord, I have sinned before heaven and before You, and I am not worthy to gaze upon the height of Your Glory.
I have provoked Thy goodness, I have transgressed Thy commandments, I have not obeyed Thy statutes.
I have angered Your goodness, I have broken Your commandments, I have not followed Your statutes.
But, O Lord, since Thou dost not remember evil, but art long-suffering and of great mercy, Thou hast not given me over to destruction for my lawlessness, but hast ever awaited my conversion.
But, O Lord, since You do not remember wrongdoing, but are patient and full of mercy, You have not let me fall into destruction for my wrongs, but have always awaited my change.
O Lover of mankind, Thou hast said by Thy prophets: “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live.”
O Lover of humanity, You have said through Your prophets: “I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from their ways and live.”
For Thou dost not wish, O Master, that the work of Thy hands should perish, neither dost Thou take pleasure in the destruction of men, but Thou desirest that all men should be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.
For You do not want, O Master, the work of Your hands to be lost, nor do You take pleasure in the destruction of people, but You desire that all people be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.
Therefore, although I am unworthy both of heaven and of earth and of this passing life, having wholly yielded myself to sin and defiled Thine image, yet being Thy creature and of Thy making, I do not despair of my salvation in my wickedness. [140] But made bold by Thine infinite compassion, I draw near.
Therefore, even though I feel unworthy of both heaven and earth and this fleeting life, having completely given in to sin and tarnished Your image, still being Your creation and made by You, I do not lose hope for my salvation despite my wrongdoing. [140] But encouraged by Your boundless compassion, I come close.
Receive me, O Christ Who lovest mankind, as Thou didst receive the prostitute, the thief, the tax-collector and the prodigal. Take away the heavy burden of my sins, for Thou takest away the sins of the world, Thou healest the infirmities of mankind, Thou callest to Thyself and givest rest to those who labor and are heavy laden.
Receive me, O Christ Who loves humanity, just as You received the prostitute, the thief, the tax collector, and the prodigal. Remove the heavy burden of my sins, for You take away the sins of the world, You heal the weaknesses of people, You call to Yourself, and You give rest to those who are working hard and are overwhelmed.
Thou hast not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Cleanse me from every stain of flesh and spirit. Teach me to fulfill holiness in fear of Thee, that having the testimony of my own conscience clean, and having communion of Thy holy things, I may be united with Thy Body and Blood and may have Thee to dwell and abide in me, with the Father and Thy Holy Spirit.
You have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Cleanse me from every blemish of body and spirit. Teach me to fulfill holiness in fear of You, so that, with a clear conscience and having communion with Your holy things, I may be united with Your Body and Blood and have You dwell and reside in me, along with the Father and Your Holy Spirit.
O Lord Jesus Christ my God, may the communion of Thy most pure and life-creating mysteries not bring me into judgment, [141] nor may I become weak in soul and body by partaking in an unworthy manner, but grant me to receive communion of Thy holy things without condemnation even to my very last breath, and by them to receive communion of the Holy Spirit, provision for the journey of eternal life, and an acceptable answer at Thy dread judgment seat; that I, together with all Thy chosen ones, may also be a partaker of the incorruptible blessings which Thou hast prepared for those who love thee, O Lord, in whom Thou art glorified forever. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, my God, may the communion of Your most pure and life-giving mysteries not lead me to judgment, [141] and may I not become weak in soul and body by receiving in an unworthy way, but allow me to receive communion of Your holy things without condemnation even until my last breath, and through them to receive the Holy Spirit, support for the journey of eternal life, and a favorable answer at Your terrifying judgment seat; so that I, along with all Your chosen ones, may also share in the everlasting blessings that You have prepared for those who love You, O Lord, in whom You are glorified forever. Amen.
2nd Prayer, of St. John Chrysostom
O Lord my God, I know that I am not worthy nor sufficiently pleasing that Thou shouldst come under the roof of the house of my soul for it is entirely desolate and fallen in ruin, and Thou wilt not find in me a place worthy to lay Thy head. But as Thou didst humble Thyself from on high for our sake, so now humble Thyself to my lowliness.
O Lord my God, I know that I am not worthy or good enough for You to come into the home of my soul because it is completely empty and in ruins, and You won’t find a place in me that is fit for You to rest. But just as You humbled Yourself from above for our sake, now please humble Yourself to my lowly state.
As Thou didst deign to lie in a cavern, in a manger of dumb beasts, so now deign to enter into the manger of my beastly soul, and into my soiled body.
As you chose to lie in a cave, in a manger among animals, so now please enter into the manger of my sinful soul, and into my unclean body.
As Thou didst not disdain to enter and to eat with sinners in the house of Simon the leper, so now be pleased to enter into the house of my soul, humble and leprous and sinful.
As You did not hesitate to come in and eat with sinners in the house of Simon the leper, please now enter the house of my soul, humble, sinful, and wounded.
As Thou didst not cast away the sinful woman who came to touch Thee, so have compassion on me a sinner who comes to touch Thee.
As you did not reject the sinful woman who came to touch you, have compassion on me, a sinner, who comes to touch you.
As Thou didst not abhor the kiss of her sin-stained and unclean mouth, do not abhor my mouth, worse stained and more unclean than hers, nor my stained and shamed and unclean lips, nor my still more impure tongue.
As you did not reject the kiss of her sin-stained and unclean mouth, do not reject my mouth, even more stained and more unclean than hers, nor my stained and shamed and unclean lips, nor my even more impure tongue.
But let the fiery coal of Thy most pure Body and Thy most precious Blood bring me sanctification, enlightenment and strengthening of my lowly soul and body, relief from the burden of my many transgressions, [143] protection against every action of the devil, repulsion and victory over my wicked and evil habits, mortification of my passions, accomplishment of Thy commandments, increase of Thy divine grace, and inheritance of Thy Kingdom.
But let the fiery coal of Your pure Body and Your precious Blood bring me sanctification, enlightenment, and strength for my humble soul and body, relief from the burden of my many sins, [143] protection against every action of the devil, resistance and victory over my bad habits, control over my passions, fulfillment of Your commandments, increase of Your divine grace, and a share in Your Kingdom.
For I do not come to Thee in presumption, O Christ my God, but made bold by Thine inexpressible goodness, lest I stray far away from Thy flock, O Master, and become caught by the wolf of souls.
For I don’t come to You with arrogance, O Christ my God, but I’m emboldened by Your incredible goodness, so I don’t wander too far from Your flock, O Master, and get caught by the soul's wolf.
Therefore, I pray Thee, O Master, for Thou alone art holy: sanctify my soul and body, my mind and heart, my muscles and bones. Renew me entirely. Implant Thy fear in my fleshly members and let Thy sanctification never be removed from me.
Therefore, I pray to You, O Master, for You alone are holy: purify my soul and body, my mind and heart, my muscles and bones. Refresh me completely. Instill Your fear in my physical being and let Your sanctification always remain with me.
Be my helper and defender, guide my life in peace and make me worthy to stand at Thy right hand with all Thy saints.
Be my helper and protector, guide my life in peace, and make me worthy to stand at Your right hand with all Your saints.
By the prayers and supplications of Thy most pure Mother, of Thy spiritual servants, the most pure angelic powers, and of all the saints who have been well-pleasing [144] to Thee. Amen.
By the prayers and requests of Your most pure Mother, Your devoted servants, the pure angelic powers, and all the saints who have pleased You. Amen.
3rd Prayer, of St. Simeon Metaphrastes
O only pure and incorruptible Lord! Because of the inexpressible mercy of Thy love for mankind, Thou didst take to Thyself our entire human composition from the pure blood of the Virgin who gave birth to Thee beyond nature, by the descent of the Holy Spirit and the good-will of the ever-existing Father.
O only pure and incorruptible Lord! Because of the incredible mercy of Your love for humanity, You took upon Yourself our entire human nature from the pure blood of the Virgin who gave birth to You beyond nature, through the descent of the Holy Spirit and the will of the ever-existing Father.
O Christ Jesus, Wisdom of God and Peace and Power, through the human nature which Thou didst take to Thyself, Thou didst suffer the life-creating and saving passion: the Cross, the nails, the spear—death itself. Put to death in me the soul-destroying passions of the body.
O Christ Jesus, Wisdom of God and Peace and Power, through the human nature You took on, You endured the life-giving and saving suffering: the Cross, the nails, the spear—death itself. Put to death in me the soul-destroying passions of the body.
Through Thy burial Thou didst capture the kingdom of death. Bury in me the evil devices of the devil with good thoughts, and destroy the spirits of evil.
Through Your burial, You conquered the kingdom of death. Bury in me the wicked schemes of the devil with good thoughts, and eradicate the evil spirits.
Through Thy life-bringing Resurrection Thou didst raise up the first father who had fallen. Raise me up who am sunk down [145] in sin and give me the image of repentance.
Through Your life-giving Resurrection, You lifted up the first father who had fallen. Raise me up, who am sunk down in sin, and grant me the image of repentance.
Through Thy glorious Ascension Thou didst deify the flesh which Thou didst assume, and placed it on the throne at the Father’s right hand. Grant me to receive a place at the right hand with the saved through communion of Thy holy mysteries.
Through Your glorious Ascension, You made the flesh You took on divine and placed it on the throne at the Father’s right hand. Help me to receive a place at the right hand with the saved through the sharing of Your holy mysteries.
Through the coming of Thy Spirit, the Comforter, Thou didst make Thy consecrated disciples to be honorable vessels. Show me also to be the receptacle of His coming.
Through the arrival of Your Spirit, the Comforter, You made Your dedicated followers honorable vessels. Help me also to be a vessel for His coming.
Thou hast promised to come again to judge the world in righteousness. Grant that I may go to meet Thee in the clouds, my Judge and Creator, with all Thy saints; that I may glorify and praise Thee without end, together with Thy Father Who is without beginning, and Thy most holy and good and life-creating Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
You have promised to return to judge the world justly. Please let me meet You in the clouds, my Judge and Creator, along with all Your saints; so that I may glorify and praise You forever, together with Your Father, Who is without beginning, and Your most holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and always, and for all ages. Amen.
4th Prayer, of St. John of Damascus
O Lord and Master Jesus Christ our God, Who alone hast power to absolve men from their sins, for Thou art good and lovest mankind: forgive all my transgressions done in knowledge or in ignorance, and make me worthy without condemnation to have communion of Thy divine and glorious and pure and life-creating mysteries. Let them not be for my punishment, or for the increase of my sins. But let them be for my purification and sanctification, as a promise of the life and Kingdom to come, a defense and a help and a repulsion of every attacker and the removal of my many transgressions. For Thou art a God of mercy and generosity and love for mankind, and to Thee we ascribe glory, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
O Lord and Master Jesus Christ our God, Who alone has the power to forgive sins, because You are good and love humanity: forgive all my wrongdoings, whether I did them knowingly or unknowingly, and make me worthy, without judgment, to receive Your divine, glorious, pure, and life-giving mysteries. May they not lead to my punishment or increase my sins. Instead, let them be for my purification and sanctification, a promise of the life and Kingdom to come, a defense, a help, a protection against any attackers, and the removal of my many offenses. For You are a God of mercy, generosity, and love for mankind, and to You we give glory, along with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.
5th Prayer, of St. Basil the Great
I know, O Lord, that I have communion unworthily of Thy most pure Body and Thy most precious Blood, and that I am [147] guilty and drink condemnation to myself not discerning Thy Body and Blood, O my Christ and God. But daring upon Thy generous loving-kindness I come to Thee Who hast said: “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him.” Be merciful, therefore, O Lord, and do not rebuke me, a sinner, but deal with me according to Thy mercy, and let Thy holy things be for my purification and healing, for enlightenment and protection, for the repulsion of every tempting thought and action of the devil which works spiritually in my fleshly members. Let them be for boldness and love for Thee, for the correction and grounding of my life, for the increase of virtue and perfection, for the fulfillment of Thy commandments, for the communion of the Holy Spirit, for the journey of eternal life, for a good and acceptable answer at Thy dread judgment, but not for judgment or condemnation. Amen.
I know, Lord, that I approach Your most pure Body and precious Blood unworthily, and I am guilty of bringing condemnation upon myself by not recognizing Your Body and Blood, O Christ my God. But relying on Your generous love, I come to You, who said: “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.” So be merciful, Lord, and do not rebuke me, a sinner; instead, treat me according to Your mercy, and let Your holy things be for my purification and healing, for enlightenment and protection, for repelling every tempting thought and action of the devil that works in my flesh. Let them inspire boldness and love for You, correct and ground my life, increase my virtue and perfection, fulfill Your commandments, grant me communion with the Holy Spirit, guide me on my journey to eternal life, and help me provide a good and acceptable answer at Your terrifying judgment, but not for judgment or condemnation. Amen.
6th Prayer, of St. Simeon the New Theologian
From lips defiled
From stained lips
and a vile heart,
and a wicked heart,
from an impure tongue
from a toxic tongue
and a soul defiled,
and a corrupted soul,
receive my prayer, O my Christ,
receive my prayer, O my Christ,
and do not despise
and don't look down on
my words, my appearance,
my words, my looks,
nor my shamelessness.
nor my lack of shame.
Grant me the boldness, my Christ,
Grant me the boldness, my Christ,
to say what I desire
to express what I want
Even more—teach me
Teach me more
what to do and say.
what to do and say.
I have sinned more than the harlot
I have sinned more than the prostitute.
who, on learning where Thou wast,
who, upon discovering where You were,
bought myrrh and came boldly
bought myrrh and arrived confidently
to anoint thy feet, my God,
to anoint your feet, my God,
my Master and my Christ.
my Master and my Savior.
As Thou didst not turn her away
As you did not turn her away
when she came with her heart,
when she came with her heart,
so, O Word, turn me not away,
so, O Word, don't turn me away,
but give me Thy feet
but give me Your feet
to hold, to kiss,
to hug, to kiss,
and to anoint boldly
and to boldly anoint
with a stream of tears
with tears flowing
as a precious ointment.
like a precious balm.
Wash me with my tears, O Word,
Wash me with my tears, O Word,
and cleanse me with them!
and cleanse me with them!
Remit my transgressions
Forgive my sins
and grant me forgiveness.
and forgive me.
Thou knowest the multitude of my evil:
You know the number of my wrongdoings:
Thou knowest also my wounds!
You also know my wounds!
Thou seest my scars:
You see my scars:
Thou knowest also my faith!
You also know my faith!
Thou seest my intentions
You see my intentions
and hearest my sighs.
and hear my sighs.
Nothing is hidden from Thee,
Nothing is hidden from You,
my God, my Maker, my Redeemer—
my God, my Creator, my Savior—
not even a tear-drop
not even a tear
or part of that drop.
or part of that drop.
Thine eyes have seen
Your eyes have seen
that which I have not yet done.
that which I have not yet done.
Thou hast inscribed in Thy book
Thou hast inscribed in Your book
things yet to happen.
things that haven't happened yet.
See my humility!
Check out my humility!
See each of my labors and all of my sins!
See all my efforts and everything I've done wrong!
Absolve me, O God of all,
Absolve me, O God of everything,
that with a pure heart,
that with a clear heart,
trembling thoughts
anxious thoughts
and a contrite soul
and a remorseful soul
I may partake of Thine undefiled
I may share in Your pure
and most holy Mysteries
and most sacred Mysteries
which enliven and deify
which inspire and glorify
all who partake of them
everyone who takes part in them
with a pure heart.
with a pure heart.
Thou hast said, O Master:
You have said, O Master:
“Whoever eats my Body
"Whoever eats my body"
and drinks my Blood
and drinks my blood
abides in me
lives in me
and I in him!”
and I in him!
True is every word
Every word is true.
of my Master and God!
of my Master and God!
When I partake of Thy divine
When I take part in Your divine
and deifying Grace,
and idolizing Grace,
I am no longer alone—
I'm not alone anymore—
I am with Thee, my Christ,
I am with You, my Christ,
the Light of the Triple Sun
the Light of the Triple Sun
which enlightens the world.
that lights up the world.
May I not remain alone—
I don't want to be alone—
without Thee, O Life-Giver,
without You, O Life-Giver,
My Breath, my Life and my Joy,
My breath, my life, and my joy,
the salvation of the world.
saving the world.
I approach Thee, therefore,
I approach you, therefore,
with tears, as Thou seest,
with tears, as You see,
and a contrite soul.
and a remorseful soul.
I beg to receive
I kindly request
deliverance from my sins.
redemption from my sins.
May I partake uncondemned
May I join without judgment
of Thy life-giving
of Your life-giving
and spotless Mysteries,
and spotless mysteries,
that Thou mayest abide,
that you may abide,
as Thou hast said,
as you have said,
with me, the thrice-wretched.
with me, the three-time cursed.
May the Tempter not find me
May the Tempter not find me
without Thy Grace
without Your Grace
and seize me deceitfully
and manipulate me dishonestly
and lead me, deceived,
and lead me, tricked,
from Thy deifying words.
from Your divine words.
Therefore, I fall down before Thee
Therefore, I bow down before You
and fervently cry:
and passionately shout:
as Thou didst receive the Prodigal
as You welcomed the Prodigal
and the harlot who came to Thee,
and the prostitute who came to You,
O Gracious One, receive me,
O Gracious One, accept me,
prodigal and defiled.
wayward and corrupted.
With a contrite soul
With a remorseful heart
I approach Thee now:
I come to You now:
I know, O Savior, that no-one has sinned
I know, O Savior, that no one has sinned
against Thee as I have,
against You as I have,
nor done the deeds
nor completed the tasks
that I have done.
that I've done.
But I also know
But I also get
that neither the greatness of my
that neither the greatness of my
transgressions
wrongdoings
nor the multitude of my sins
nor the multitude of my sins
surpass the great patience of my God
surpass the immense patience of my God
and His extreme love for mankind.
and His deep love for humanity.
Through Thy merciful compassion
Through Your merciful compassion
Thou dost cleanse and brighten
You cleanse and brighten
those who repent with fervor,
those who earnestly repent,
making them partakers of Light
making them part of the Light
and full communicants
and full members
of Thy Divinity.
of Your Divinity.
To the astonishment of angels
To the surprise of angels
and human minds,
and human brains,
Thou dost converse with them often
You chat with them often.
as with Thy true friends.
as with Your true friends.
This makes me bold, my Christ,
This makes me brave, my Christ,
this gives me wings!
this lifts me up!
Emboldened by the wealth
Fueled by the wealth
of Thy generosity towards us,
of your generosity towards us,
with both joy and trepidation,
with joy and anxiety,
I who am grass
I am grass
partake of fire.
enjoy the fire.
O strange wonder!
Oh, what a strange wonder!
I am sprinkled with dew
I'm covered in dew.
and am not burned,
and am not hurt,
as the bush burned of old
as the bush burned of old
without being consumed.
without getting burned.
With grateful thoughts
Grateful thoughts
and a grateful heart,
and a thankful heart,
with my grateful members,
with my thankful members,
my soul and my body,
my mind and body,
I now fall down and worship
I now kneel down and worship.
and glorify Thee, my God,
and praise You, my God,
for blessed art Thou,
for blessed are You,
now and for ever.
now and forever.
7th Prayer, of St. John Chrysostom
O God, absolve, remit and pardon me my transgressions—as many sins as I have committed by word or action or thought, willingly or unwillingly, consciously or unconsciously; forgive me everything since Thou art good and lovest mankind. And by the prayers of Thy most pure Mother, of Thy spiritual servants, the holy angelic powers and all the saints, who from all ages have been well-pleasing to Thee, be pleased to allow me to receive Thy most pure Body and Thy most [154] precious Blood for the healing of my soul and body, and the purification of my evil thoughts. For Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
O God, forgive, clear, and pardon me for my wrongdoings—every sin I've committed through words, actions, or thoughts, whether I meant to or not, whether I was aware of it or not; forgive me everything because You are good and love humanity. And through the prayers of Your most pure Mother, Your spiritual servants, the holy angelic powers, and all the saints who have pleased You throughout the ages, please allow me to receive Your most pure Body and Your most precious Blood for the healing of my soul and body, and the cleansing of my evil thoughts. For Yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen.
8th Prayer, of St. John Chrysostom
I am not worthy, Master and Lord, that Thou shouldst enter under the roof of my soul; yet inasmuch as Thou desirest to live in me as the Lover of mankind, I approach with boldness. Thou hast commanded: Let the doors be opened which Thou alone hast made and Thou shalt enter with Thy love for mankind just as Thou art. Thou shalt enter and enlighten my darkened reasoning. I believe that Thou wilt do this. For Thou didst not cast away the prostitute who came to Thee with tears, neither didst Thou turn away the tax-collector who repented, nor didst Thou reject the thief who acknowledged Thy Kingdom, nor didst Thou forsake the repentant persecutor, the Apostle Paul, [155] even as he was. But all who came to Thee in repentance Thou didst unite to the ranks of Thy friends, Who alone art blessed forever, now and unto the endless ages. Amen.
I am not worthy, Master and Lord, that You should enter under the roof of my soul; yet, since You want to live in me as the Lover of humanity, I come boldly. You have commanded: Let the doors be opened which You alone have made, and You will enter with Your love for humanity just as You are. You will enter and illuminate my darkened reasoning. I believe that You will do this. For You did not turn away the woman who came to You in tears, nor did You reject the tax collector who repented, nor did You deny the thief who recognized Your Kingdom, nor did You abandon the repentant persecutor, the Apostle Paul, even as he was. But all who came to You in repentance, You united with the ranks of Your friends, Who alone are blessed forever, now and for all eternity. Amen.
9th Prayer, of St. John Chrysostom
O Lord Jesus Christ my God, absolve, loose, cleanse and forgive me Thy sinful and useless and unworthy servant my errors, transgressions and sinful failing as many as I have committed from my youth up to this present day and hour, consciously and unconsciously, in words or actions or reasonings, thoughts, pursuits and in all my senses. By the prayers of Thy Mother the most pure and ever-virgin Mary who gave birth to Thee without human seed, my only hope which will not put me to shame, my intercessor and salvation, grant me to have communion without condemnation of Thy most pure, immortal, life-creating and awesome mysteries; for the remission of sins and unto life everlasting; for sanctification, [156] enlightenment, strength, healing and health of soul and body; for the most perfect removal and destruction of my evil thoughts and reasonings and intentions, fantasies by night, brought by dark and evil spirits; for Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory and the honor and the worship with the Father and Thy Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, my God, please forgive, release, cleanse, and absolve me, Your sinful, useless, and unworthy servant, of all my mistakes, wrongdoings, and sins, as many as I have committed from my youth up to this present day and hour, both knowingly and unknowingly, in my words, actions, thoughts, desires, and through all my senses. By the prayers of Your most pure and ever-virgin Mother Mary, who bore You without human seed, my only hope who will not let me down, my intercessor and salvation, allow me to receive communion without condemnation of Your most pure, immortal, life-giving, and awe-inspiring mysteries; for the forgiveness of sins and for eternal life; for sanctification, enlightenment, strength, healing, and health of my soul and body; for the complete removal and destruction of my evil thoughts, reasonings, and intentions, and fantasies at night, brought on by dark and evil spirits; for Yours is the Kingdom, the power, the glory, the honor, and the worship, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.
10th Prayer, of St. John of Damascus
I stand before the doors of Thy temple, and I do not forsake my wicked thoughts. But, O Christ my God, as Thou hast justified the tax-collector, and hast had mercy on the woman of Canaan and hast opened the gates of paradise to the thief, open to me the interior depths of Thy love for mankind and receive me as I come and repent before Thee. Receive me as Thou didst receive the sinful woman and the woman with the flow of blood. For the first embraced Thy most pure feet and received the forgiveness of her sins, and the second [157] just touched the hem of Thy garment and received healing. But I who am lost, daring to receive Thy whole Body, may I not be burned; but receive me as Thou hast received them, and enlighten my spiritual senses, burning up my spiritual faults by the prayers of her who gave birth to Thee without human seed, and of the heavenly angelic powers, for Thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.
I stand before the doors of Your temple, and I do not turn away from my wrong thoughts. But, O Christ my God, just as You have justified the tax collector, shown mercy to the woman from Canaan, and opened the gates of paradise to the thief, open to me the depths of Your love for humanity and accept me as I come and repent before You. Accept me as You accepted the sinful woman and the woman who touched Your cloak. For the first embraced Your pure feet and received forgiveness for her sins, and the second just touched the hem of Your garment and was healed. But I who am lost, daring to receive Your whole Body, may I not be consumed; but accept me as You accepted them, and enlighten my spiritual senses, cleansing my spiritual faults by the prayers of her who gave birth to You without human involvement, and of the heavenly angelic powers, for You are blessed forever. Amen.
Another Prayer of St. John Chrysostom
I believe, O Lord, and I confess that Thou art truly the Christ, the Son of the living God Who camest into the world to save sinners, of whom I am first. I believe also that this is truly Thine own most pure Body, and that this is truly Thine own precious Blood. Therefore, I pray Thee: have mercy upon me and forgive my transgressions both voluntary and involuntary, of word and of deed, committed in knowledge or in ignorance. And make me worthy to partake without condemnation of Thy most pure Mysteries, for the remission [158] of my sins, and unto life everlasting. Amen.
I believe, Lord, and I confess that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst. I also believe that this is truly Your own most pure Body, and that this is truly Your own precious Blood. Therefore, I pray to You: have mercy on me and forgive my sins, both those I committed intentionally and unintentionally, in what I said and did, whether I knew it or not. And make me worthy to partake without judgment of Your most pure Mysteries, for the forgiveness of my sins, and for everlasting life. Amen.
As you approach to partake, say silently the following verses of Metaphrastes:
As you get ready to join in, silently recite these lines from Metaphrastes:
Behold: I draw near to the Divine Communion.
Behold: I come closer to the Divine Communion.
Burn me not as I partake, O Creator,
Burn me not as I partake, O Creator,
For Thou art a Fire which burns the unworthy.
For you are a fire that burns the unworthy.
Rather, cleanse me of all defilement.
Rather, cleanse me of all impurities.

Of Thy Mystical Supper, O Son of God, accept me this day as a communicant; for I will not speak of Thy Mystery to Thine enemies, neither like Judas will I give Thee a kiss; but like the thief will I confess Thee: Remember me, O Lord, in Thy Kingdom.
Of Your Mystical Supper, O Son of God, accept me today as a participant; for I will not speak of Your Mystery to Your enemies, nor like Judas will I betray You with a kiss; but like the thief, I will confess You: Remember me, O Lord, in Your Kingdom.
And the following verses:
And the next verses:
Be awed, O man, when you see the deifying Blood!
Be amazed, oh man, when you see the divine Blood!
It is a fire which burns the unworthy!
It’s a fire that burns the unworthy!
The Divine Body both deifies and nourishes me.
The Divine Body both makes me divine and sustains me.
It deifies the spirit and wondrously nourishes the mind.
It elevates the spirit and wonderfully feeds the mind.
Then, the following Troparia:

With love hast Thou drawn me, O Christ, and with Thy divine love hast Thou changed me. Burn away my sins with a spiritual fire and satisfy me with joy in Thee, that I may joyfully magnify Thy two comings, O Good One.
With love You have drawn me, O Christ, and with Your divine love You have changed me. Burn away my sins with a spiritual fire and fill me with joy in You, so that I can joyfully celebrate Your two comings, O Good One.
How shall I, who am unworthy, enter into the radiance of Thy saints? If I dare to enter the bridal-chamber, my garment accuses me, for it is not a wedding garment, and the angels will bind me and cast me out. Cleanse, O Lord, the filth of my soul and save me, for Thou lovest mankind.
How can I, who am unworthy, step into the light of Your saints? If I try to enter the bridal chamber, my clothing reveals my shame because it’s not a wedding garment, and the angels will grab me and throw me out. Cleanse, O Lord, the dirt from my soul and save me, for You love humanity.
And this prayer:
And this prayer:
O Master Who lovest mankind! O Lord Jesus Christ my God! May these holy things not be to my condemnation, though I am unworthy of them. May they be for the cleansing and sanctification of my soul and body and a pledge of the life and [160] Kingdom that are to come.
O Master who loves humanity! O Lord Jesus Christ, my God! May these holy things not bring me condemnation, even though I don’t deserve them. May they be for the cleansing and sanctification of my soul and body and a promise of the life and Kingdom that are to come. [160]
It is good for me to cleave to God and to place in the Lord the hope of my salvation

PRAYERS OF THANKSGIVING AFTER COMMUNION
Glory to Thee, O God! Glory to Thee, O God! Glory to Thee, O God!
Glory to You, O God! Glory to You, O God! Glory to You, O God!
I thank Thee, O Lord my God, for Thou hast not rejected me, a sinner, but hast made me worthy to be a partaker of Thy holy things. I thank Thee, for Thou hast permitted me, the unworthy, to commune of Thy most pure and heavenly Gifts. But, O Master, Who lovest mankind, Who for our sakes didst die and rise again, and gavest us these awesome and life-creating Mysteries for the good and sanctification of our souls and bodies; let them be for the healing of soul and body, the repelling of every adversary, the illumining of the eyes of my heart, the peace of my spiritual powers, a faith unashamed, a love unfeigned, the fulfilling of wisdom, the observing of Thy commandments, the receiving of Thy Divine Grace, and the attaining of [162] Thy Kingdom. Preserved by them in Thy holiness, may I always remember Thy Grace and live not for myself alone, but for Thee, our Master and Benefactor. May I pass from this life in the hope of eternal life, and so attain to the everlasting rest, where the voice of those who feast is unceasing, and the gladness of those who behold the goodness of Thy countenance is unending. For Thou art the true desire and the ineffable joy of those who love Thee, O Christ our God, and all creation sings of Thy praise forever. Amen.
I thank You, Lord my God, for not rejecting me, a sinner, but for making me worthy to partake in Your holy gifts. I thank You for allowing me, the unworthy, to share in Your most pure and heavenly blessings. But, O Master, Who loves humanity, Who for our sake died and rose again, and gave us these amazing and life-giving Mysteries for the good and sanctification of our souls and bodies; let them heal my soul and body, drive away every enemy, enlighten the eyes of my heart, bring peace to my spirit, give me a faith without shame, a genuine love, fulfill my wisdom, help me obey Your commandments, receive Your Divine Grace, and reach Your Kingdom. Through these, may I always remember Your Grace and live not just for myself, but for You, our Master and Benefactor. May I leave this life with the hope of eternal life, and attain everlasting rest, where the voices of those who feast are never-ending, and the joy of those who see Your goodness is unceasing. For You are the true desire and indescribable joy of those who love You, O Christ our God, and all of creation sings Your praises forever. Amen.
A Prayer of Saint Basil the Great
O Master Christ our God, King of the Ages, Maker of all things: I thank Thee for all the good things Thou hast given me, especially for the communion with Thy most pure and life-creating Mysteries. I pray Thee, O gracious Lover of Man: preserve me under Thy protection, beneath the shadow of Thy wings. Enable me even to my last breath, to partake worthily and with a pure conscience of Thy holy things, for the remission of [163] sins and unto life eternal. For Thou art the Bread of Life, the Fountain of Holiness, the Giver of all Good; to Thee we ascribe glory, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
O Master Christ our God, King of the Ages, Creator of all things: I thank You for all the good things You have given me, especially for the communion with Your most pure and life-giving Mysteries. I pray to You, O gracious Lover of Humanity: keep me under Your protection, beneath the shadow of Your wings. Help me, even until my last breath, to partake worthily and with a pure conscience of Your holy things, for the forgiveness of sins and for eternal life. For You are the Bread of Life, the Fountain of Holiness, the Giver of all Good; to You we give glory, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and for all ages. Amen.
A Prayer by Saint Simeon Metaphrastes
Freely Thou hast given me Thy Body for my food, O Thou Who art a fire consuming the unworthy. Consume me not, O my Creator, but instead enter into my members, my veins, my heart. Consume the thorns of my transgressions. Cleanse my soul and sanctify my reasonings. Make firm my knees and body. Illumine my five senses. Nail me to the fear of Thee. Always protect, guard, and keep me from soul-destroying words and deeds. Cleanse me, purify me, and adorn me. Give me understanding and illumination. Show me to be a temple of Thy One Spirit and not the home of many sins. May every evil thing, every carnal passion flee from me as from a fire as I become Thy tabernacle [164] through communion. I offer Thee as intercessors all the saints: the leaders of the bodiless hosts, Thy Forerunner, the wise apostles, and Thy pure and blameless Mother. Accept their prayers in Thy love, O my Christ, and make me, Thy servant, a child of light. For Thou art the only Sanctification and Light of our souls, O Good One, and to Thee, our Master and God, we ascribe glory day by day.

A Prayer to the Theotokos
O most holy Lady Theotokos, the light of my darkened soul, my hope, my protection, my refuge, my rest, and my joy: I [165] thank you, for you have permitted me, the unworthy, to be a partaker of the most pure Body and precious Blood of your Son. Give the light of understanding to the eyes of my heart, you that gave birth to the True Light. Enliven me who am deadened by sin, you that gave birth to the Fountain of Immortality. Have mercy on me, O loving Mother of the merciful God. Grant me compunction and contrition of heart, humility in my thoughts, and a release from the slavery of my own reasonings. And enable me, even to my last breath, to receive the sanctification of the most pure Mysteries, for the healing of soul and body. Grant me tears of repentance and confession, that I may glorify you all the days of my life, for you are blessed and greatly glorified forever. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us [167] not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
