PLATE I.—THE REFERENCE HAND.

PLATE I.—THE REFERENCE HAND.

v

PREFACE.

Cheiromancy, the art of foretelling the events of life by the lineaments of the hand, derived its name from the Greek word cheiros, the palm, and manteia, to foretell, whence it has been vulgarly called Palmistry—as it is named in a recent Act of Parliament to forbid its practice for gain or reward. In Coleman's Mythology of the Hindoos, p. 202, it is written: "On the Buddha's foot is the mark called the 'chakravarti,' wheel or discus, which should have been on the palm of the hand, by which the sages at his birth divined that he would rise to considerable eminence." He says (p. 19): "Various data have been assigned to the period of Buddha's existence. The most correct seems to be about 550 B.C., whence, as the sages practised cheiromancy at Buddha's birth, its existence must have been much earlier known among the Indians." "In the year 1652," writes Zadkiel, "the celebrated astrologer, Geo. Wharton, Esq., published a translation of 'a matchless piece' as vihe terms it, on the subject, written in Latin by Dr. J. Rothman." Since that period the art of cheiromancy has gradually fallen into disuse, chiefly from the extensive nonsense published by recent writers. One of the writers makes a shallow attempt to disprove the connection which exists between astrology and palmistry, while another says it is based on the principles of the Kabalah, the latter being nothing more than a mnemonical system of astrology. From the writings of Dr. J. Rothman and Geo. Wharton, Esq., I propose now to give, together with some of the choicest of those of the East, the principal matter, and to explain in the ordinary language used by palmisters such points as may require elucidation. Mr. Wharton, a careful student in these subjects, clearly proves that palmistry can only act in accordance with astrology, and that the art of cheiromancy cannot be relied upon beyond the period of from one to two years at most, for he observes in his preface, "What more convincing than if, by inspection made into the hand of any man, I truly pronounce this or that planet essentially dignified or angular in his geniture, or in such or such a position with other planets or stars, another unfortunate, afflicted or defected? Or if, on the contrary, by looking first into the geniture and considering therein the several positions of viithe planets and their configurations one to another and with other stars, I tell him, and that distinctly and truly, the lines and signatures engraven upon his head or hand—what, I say, is or can be more satisfactory than this to rational men, as touching the power and influence of the planets and stars upon these inferiors, and consequently of the lawful use and truth of the science called astrology, cheiromancy and metoposcopia, between which three sciences there appear to be such a secret coherence and harmony?"

Cheiromancy, the art of predicting life events based on the lines of the hand, gets its name from the Greek words cheiros, meaning palm, and manteia, meaning to predict. It's commonly known as Palmistry, as mentioned in a recent Act of Parliament that aims to prohibit its practice for profit. In Coleman's Mythology of the Hindoos, p. 202, it states: "On the Buddha's foot is the mark known as the 'chakravarti,' a wheel or discus, which should have been on the palm of his hand, by which the sages at his birth predicted that he would achieve great prominence." He notes (p. 19): "Various dates have been suggested for the period of Buddha's life. The most accurate seems to be around 550 BCE, indicating that since the sages practiced cheiromancy at Buddha's birth, its use must have been known among Indians much earlier." "In 1652," writes Zadkiel, "the famous astrologer Geo. Wharton, Esq., published a translation of 'a matchless piece' on the topic, written in Latin by Dr. J. Rothman." Since then, the practice of cheiromancy has gradually declined, largely due to the vast amount of nonsense produced by recent writers. One writer makes a weak attempt to dismiss the connection between astrology and palmistry, while another claims it is based on the principles of the Kabalah, which is simply a mnemonic system for astrology. From the works of Dr. J. Rothman and Geo. Wharton, Esq., I plan to provide, along with some of the most valuable insights from the East, the main ideas, and to clarify in the everyday language used by palmists any points that may need explanation. Mr. Wharton, a diligent student in these fields, clearly demonstrates that palmistry can only function in alignment with astrology and that the art of cheiromancy cannot be trusted to predict beyond one to two years at most. In his preface, he states, "What could be more convincing than if, by examining the hand of any man, I accurately declare that this or that planet is particularly strong or prominently placed in his birth chart, or in such and such a relation to other planets or stars, while another may be unfortunate, afflicted, or lacking? Or if, conversely, by first looking at the birth chart and noting the various positions of vii the planets and their configurations to one another and with other stars, I can distinctly and accurately describe the lines and characteristics marked on his head or hand—what could be more satisfying for rational people regarding the power and influence of the planets and stars on these lesser beings, and consequently the valid use and truth of the science known as astrology, cheiromancy, and metoposcopy, between which three fields there seems to be a hidden coherence and harmony?"

It is also written in the Book of Job, xxxvii. 7: "In the hand of all men he shall put a mark that everyone may know his own work"; but in our translation of the Bible it is written as follows: "In the hand of all men he putteth a mark that every man may know his own work." This alone proves that Job believed in this science.

It is also written in the Book of Job, xxxvii. 7: “In the hands of all people, He puts a mark so that everyone can recognize their own work”; but in our translation of the Bible, it reads: “In the hand of all men he putteth a mark that every man may know his own work.” This alone proves that Job believed in this science.

(8) Their place and position.

Their location and status.

Note.—The lines are sometimes lengthened until certain years of our life, while others are shortened. At one time they may become pale, at another they become notably clear and red. The minor marks, such as are found on the mounts, sometimes quite vanish, and at other times they will assume different shapes and colours. Therefore the most studious in palmistry cannot attain a complete knowledge of the events of a life at once, because they come and go as nature, or the circumstances of life, change and twist, but can only read for a year or so in advance. These changes are caused, as before stated, by the progressions 28and changing of the laws relating to nature, of which we are a part.

Note.—The lines on our palms can sometimes get longer until certain years of our lives, while at other times they may get shorter. They can appear faded at one moment and bright and red at another. The smaller marks found on the mounts can completely disappear sometimes, and at other times they take on different shapes and colors. So, even the most dedicated palm readers can't fully grasp all the events of a life at once, since they evolve as nature or life circumstances shift and change; they can only provide insights for about a year or so into the future. These fluctuations occur, as mentioned earlier, because of the ongoing changes in the natural laws of which we are a part.

The Hand to Check.

The general rule in the East is that the right palm of the male and the left palm of the female ought to be examined. In either case take the hand in which the signs and lines are clearly shown. If they concur in both hands and appear clear and nicely marked they declare a constancy of fortune and health, etc. In the male generally the right hand is the fate hand or the positive hand, that is, events about to happen; while the left denotes the negative or those events which have come to pass or been accomplished by the person, or those just passing away. Judge the converse in the female hands.

The general rule in the East is that the right palm of a man and the left palm of a woman should be examined. In either case, take the hand where the signs and lines are most clear. If they match in both hands and are well-defined and marked, it indicates a consistency in fortune and health, among other things. For men, the right hand is usually considered the fate hand or the positive hand, meaning it shows events that are about to happen; whereas the left hand reflects the negative, showing events that have already occurred or are currently happening. The opposite applies for women's hands.

Meaning of Animals, Flowers, and Random Marks Found on the Hand.

These are principally formed by the smaller lines running with the pores of the skin. Great care must therefore be taken in determining these forms, because very much depends on their position. The numbers herein referred to have reference to Plate II of the hand which I have set apart for the express purpose of showing these marks and signs.

These are mainly created by the smaller lines that run along the skin’s pores. So, it’s crucial to be careful when identifying these shapes, as their position is very important. The numbers mentioned here refer to Plate II of the hand, which I have specifically set aside to display these marks and signs.

The first space of the hand near to the mounts is that part which has principally to show the animal passions—lusts and intrigues.

The first space of the hand near the mounts is the area that primarily reveals the animal instincts—desires and affairs.

31The second area, or the section of the hand between the girdle of Venus and the Table line, is more focused on love relationships or the spiritual aspect, while the first one is more about the physical aspect.

These two, therefore, taken together, may be considered the moral region of the hand.

These two, taken together, can be seen as the moral area of the hand.

The next space between the Table line and the Liver line may be called the mental and social region.

A line ascending from the line of Life (beneath the angle formed by the line of Life and the Liver line) to the line of Saturn, denotes an envious man, and shows also a perilous disease in that part wherein it touches the vital. So much the worse if it cut the line of Life or severs the mount.

A line rising from the line of Life (below the angle created by the line of Life and the Liver line) to the line of Saturn indicates an envious person and also suggests a serious illness in the area it connects with vital parts. It’s even worse if it crosses the line of Life or breaks the mount.

A line passing from the line of Life to the ring finger promises honours to follow by means of a lady of rank, or gain through favour.

A line extending from the line of Life to the ring finger suggests that honors will come from a woman of rank or success will come through connections.

The line of Life thicker than ordinary at the end under the forefinger shows a laborious old age.

The life line, thicker than usual at the end under the forefinger, indicates a difficult old age.

The Liver Line.

This line being straight and not dissected by obscure little lines, denotes a healthy body.

This straight line, free from confusing small lines, indicates a healthy body.

If it be short or broken and does not reach beyond the hollow of the hand, it denotes diseases and a short life.

If it's short or broken and doesn't extend beyond the palm of your hand, it suggests health issues and a short lifespan.

The longer this line, the greater may the life be warranted.

The longer this line, the more important life may be guaranteed.

If cut at the end by a small intervening line, it threatens poverty in old age.

If it's interrupted at the end by a small line, it risks leading to poverty in old age.

When this line is very close to the line of Life, it denotes diseases of the heart, as palpitation, syncope, etc.

When this line is very close to the line of Life, it indicates heart issues, such as palpitations, fainting, etc.

44If the space between the line of Life and the Liver line, especially of the space between the Liver line and the line of Fortune, be broad, it shows prodigality.

44If the gap between the Life line and the Liver line, especially the space between the Liver line and the line of Fortune, is wide, it indicates extravagance.

If the Liver line turn and wind several ways, unequal, of a different colour and dissected, it bodes disease or obstruction in the liver, and hence the disease arising from its weakness. It also denotes covetousness and depravity of nature and wit; more especially if from under the region of the middle finger it extends towards the line of Life, thus making a short or narrow triangle. Where it is well drawn and of a good clear colour, it is a sign of a cheerful and ingenious disposition.

If the Liver line twists and turns in various directions, appearing uneven, of different colors, and broken, it indicates illness or blockage in the liver, leading to problems from its frailty. It also suggests greed and a corrupt nature and intellect; particularly if it extends from beneath the middle finger towards the Life line, forming a small or narrow triangle. When it is well-defined and a vibrant color, it signals a joyful and creative personality.

If this line have a sister line it promises inheritances.

If this line has a sister line, it promises inheritances.

If continued with some little hard knots, it forebodes manslaughter either perpetrated or to be perpetrated, according to the number of those knots.

If there are still some small hard knots, it suggests manslaughter that has either happened or is about to happen, depending on how many knots there are.

If a cross be found therein, under the region of the middle finger, it promises death at hand.

If a cross is found there, under the area of the middle finger, it signals that death is near.

If it ends with a fork towards the mount of the Moon, it is a sign of hypocrisy and evil manners.

If it ends with a fork toward the peak of the Moon, it's a sign of hypocrisy and bad behavior.

When it bends towards the Mensal it is a token of a slanderous tongue and envy.

When it leans toward the Mensal, it's a sign of a gossiping tongue and jealousy.

When it projects a remarkable branch through the line of Life unto the mount of Venus, and cuts or touches the line of Mars, especially if the line be of a ruddy colour, it warns to be guarded against thieves and intimates, fraud and deceit of enemies. 45This same branch shows also great heat of the liver, coming from Mars, whereby life is endangered.

When it shows a significant branch through the line of Life towards the mount of Venus, and intersects or touches the line of Mars, especially if the line is a reddish color, it warns to be cautious of thieves and suggests deception and treachery from enemies. 45 This same branch also indicates high liver heat, stemming from Mars, which can threaten one's life.

The Line of the Head and Brain.

If this line (ascending from its place with uniform proportion) connect the line of the Liver and Life in a triangular form, having a lively colour and not intersected, it declares a person of admirable prudence, and of a manly wit and fair fortune. The more perfect this triangle, the better shall the temper, wit and courage be. But if it be obtuse, it argues an evil disposed nature and a rude man. If there be no triangle, much worse, a fool, a prodigal and a liar, and frequently a short life.

If this line (rising steadily from its point with a consistent proportion) connects the line of the Liver and Life in a triangular shape, having a vibrant color and not intersecting, it indicates a person of great wisdom, strong intellect, and good fortune. The more perfect this triangle is, the better the personality, intelligence, and bravery will be. However, if it’s obtuse, it suggests a malicious nature and a coarse individual. If there’s no triangle at all, it’s much worse—indicating someone who is foolish, wasteful, and deceitful, and often leads to a short life.

The nearer it approaches a right angle, and not acute, the better the person. But when the angle formed be very acute, especially when the lines of Liver and Life touch under the region of the middle finger, it argues covetousness. If not under the middle finger, it shows a keen, sharp and powerful wit, also a clever business person.

The closer it gets to a right angle, rather than an acute one, the better the person. However, if the angle is very sharp, especially when the lines of Liver and Life meet under the middle finger, it suggests greed. If it's not under the middle finger, it indicates a sharp, intelligent, and powerful mind, as well as a savvy businessperson.

The left angle (male hand), if it be made upon the natural mean in the mount of the Moon, and be a right angle by the line passing to the mount of Mercury, confirms goodness, and quality of the intellect.

The left angle (male hand), if it’s aligned with the natural mean of the mount of the Moon and forms a right angle with the line extending to the mount of Mercury, indicates goodness and the quality of the intellect.

When the line of the Head and Brain throws out unequal and incomposed branches towards the mount of the Moon, thereby making unusual characters, it denotes in men weakness of brain and 46dangerous sea voyages; but in a woman frequent sorrows of mind and difficulties in child-bearing. Equal lines thus projected presage the contrary in both sexes, viz., in men, a clear and well-composed brain and frequent voyages, and in women cheerfulness and felicity in child-bearing.

When the line connecting the Head and Brain has uneven and disorganized branches extending toward the mount of the Moon, creating unusual signs, it indicates that men may struggle with weak minds and dangerous sea voyages; for women, it often means frequent emotional distress and challenges with childbirth. On the other hand, evenly formed lines predict the opposite outcomes for both genders: in men, a clear and organized mind along with frequent travels, and in women, happiness and success in childbirth. 46

The line of the Head has this peculiarity; if it project a cleft or a manifest star upwards to the cavea martis, it signifies boldness and courage; but if it let fall the same downwards, thefts and deceitfulness.

The line of the Head has this unique feature; if it shows a split or a clear star pointing up to the Mars arena, it indicates boldness and courage; but if it points down, it suggests theft and deceitfulness.

When the line of the Head is joined to the line of the Dragon's Head it promises a prudent and pleasant old age. The same throwing a branch in the shape of a fork towards the place of the line of Fortune signifies subtlety in managing affairs and craftiness either to do good or evil.

When the line of the Head connects with the line of the Dragon's Head, it indicates a wise and enjoyable old age. Similarly, throwing a branch shaped like a fork toward the line of Fortune suggests cleverness in handling matters and the cunning to do either good or bad.

If this character ⊕ appears in or near the fork it gives riches and honours by means of ingenuity and arts.

If this character ⊕ appears in or near the fork, it brings wealth and fame through creativity and skills.

The Line of Fortune.

This line is also called the Table line. This line, when it is long enough and without incisures, argues a due strength in the principal members of man and denotes constancy. Judge the contrary if this line be short or crooked or is severed. When this line terminates under the mount of Saturn, it shows a vain and lying fellow.

This line is also known as the Table line. If this line is long enough and has no notches, it indicates a proper strength in a person's main traits and suggests reliability. Conversely, if this line is short, crooked, or broken, it indicates the opposite. When this line ends under the mount of Saturn, it suggests a deceitful and dishonest person.

If it projects small branches unto the mount of Jupiter, it produces honours. Should this be a 47simple line on the mount of Jupiter, and void of any good marks or branches, it is a sign of poverty and want.

If it shows small branches on the mount of Jupiter, it brings honors. If this is just a simple line on the mount of Jupiter, without any good marks or branches, it indicates poverty and need. 47

If it severs the mount of Jupiter, cruelty of mind and excessive wrath.

If it cuts through the mount of Jupiter, it shows a cruel mind and excessive anger.

If it throws a branch between the forefinger and the middle, it threatens to a man a wound in the head, but to a woman danger in child-bearing.

If it throws a branch between the index finger and the middle finger, it signals a head injury for a man, but for a woman, it indicates danger during childbirth.

A small line running from the line of Fortune to the space between the middle and ring finger, denotes sorrow and labour.

A small line extending from the line of Fortune to the area between the middle and ring finger indicates sorrow and hard work.

A line passing from the Liver line to the line of Fortune, forming an acute angle, brings sorrow and labour.

A line extending from the Liver line to the line of Fortune, creating an acute angle, brings sadness and hardship.

Should there be no Liver line and the line of Fortune connected by a small line to the line of Life, it threatens a deadly wound.

Should there be no Liver line and the line of Fortune connected by a small line to the line of Life, it indicates a serious risk of a deadly injury.

The absence of the line of Fortune shows a malevolent, contentious, faithless, inconstant person and of base conditions.

The lack of the line of Fortune indicates a malicious, argumentative, untrustworthy, and fickle person with low character.

Confused little lines in the line of Fortune denote sickness, and if under Mercury, in the first age; under the mount of the Sun in manhood; under the middle finger in old age.

Confusing little lines in the line of Fortune indicate illness, and if they appear under Mercury, it signifies sickness in early life; under the mount of the Sun during adulthood; and under the middle finger in old age.

When certain points are observed in this line they argue lust and vigour of body.

When certain points are noticed in this line, they suggest desire and physical energy.

The Bracelet Collection.

If this be double or treble and forming a right and continuous tract, it promises a good composure of body.

If this is double or triple and creates a straight and continuous path, it suggests a good physical condition.

48The line which is nearest to the thumb, of a good lively colour, and unbroken, promises riches. Should this line be broken in the middle, crooked and very pale, it denotes debility of body and a want of all things.

48The line closest to the thumb, with a vibrant color and unbroken, suggests wealth. If this line is broken in the middle, crooked, and very pale, it indicates poor health and a lack of resources.

A cross or star placed here shows tranquillity of life in old age.

A cross or star placed here symbolizes the peace that comes with old age.

If there be a star single or double or any lines near the mount of the thumb, in women they denote misfortune and infamy.

If there is a single or double star or any lines near the base of the thumb, in women they indicate misfortune and dishonor.

A line passing from the Dragon line through the mount of Venus, presages adversities either by means of some kindred or a wife.

A line running from the Dragon line through the mountain of Venus suggests challenges, possibly caused by a relative or a spouse.

A line running from the Dragon line to the mount of the Moon shows adversities and private enemies; crooked or distorted it increases the evil and shows long servitude.

A line drawn from the Dragon line to the mountain of the Moon reveals struggles and personal foes; if it's twisted or warped, it amplifies the negativity and indicates prolonged servitude.

This line being clear and straight and extending as far as the region of the Moon, presages many journeys both by land and sea.

This clear and straight line extends all the way to the area of the Moon, signaling many journeys by both land and sea.

If this line continues to the mount of Mercury it argues that the man will live in a foreign country in great esteem. If it extends to the Liver line it shows an honest behaviour and a long life. If to the mount of the Sun, single or double, it denotes great good and enables the man to govern and rule in great affairs. If it pass to the mount of Mercury it betokens a man fit for many things. If it does not extend to the mount of Mercury, but is broken about the middle and ends beneath that mount, it 49denotes an untruthful, tittle-tattling, discontented person.

If this line goes to the mount of Mercury, it suggests that the person will live abroad and be held in high regard. If it reaches the Liver line, it indicates honesty and a long life. If it extends to the mount of the Sun, whether single or double, it signifies great fortune and the ability to lead in significant matters. If it reaches the mount of Mercury, it suggests a person capable of many things. However, if it doesn't reach the mount of Mercury and is broken in the middle, ending below that mount, it indicates an untrustworthy, gossiping, unhappy individual. 49

If this line ascends directly to the mount of Saturn, it denotes a good position of Saturn in the geniture; but if crooked and passes towards the Dragon line and the Liver line, it denotes a hard, covetous, and laborious man.

If this line goes straight to the mountain of Saturn, it indicates a strong position of Saturn in the birth chart; but if it curves and moves toward the Dragon line and the Liver line, it suggests a harsh, greedy, and hardworking person.

The Way of the Sun.

This line being straight and uniformly composed and well coloured, promises the favour of great men, and joyful honours; if dissected and uneven, judge the contrary, with various impediments and envy.

This straight line, smooth and nicely colored, suggests the approval of influential people and brings joyful recognition; if it's broken and uneven, expect the opposite, filled with struggles and jealousy.

The Milky Way.

This line being uniformly composed, proportionate and continued, denotes fortunate journeys both by sea and land; also a good brain, the favour of women (the mount of Venus being unafflicted), a composed and graceful speech. If it be cut or distorted it argues infelicity and lies; but if whole, ascending towards the little finger, it is a sign of great happiness.

This line being consistently formed, balanced, and unbroken indicates successful travels both by sea and land; it also suggests a sharp mind, the favor of women (with the mount of Venus being unharmed), and a calm and eloquent way of speaking. If it’s broken or misshapen, it points to misfortune and deceit; however, if it’s intact and extends toward the little finger, it signifies great happiness.

The Line of Saturn.

This line being fully and wholly protracted to the middle finger is an argument of profound meditations, and of fortunate events in counsels and actions.

This line being fully extended to the middle finger is a sign of deep thoughts and lucky outcomes in decisions and actions.

This line deficient is an evil sign portending many misfortunes, unless other positions favour it. If bending backward, into the hollow of the hand 50towards the mount of the Moon, after the form of a semicircle, threatens imprisonment.

This line's deficiency is a bad sign predicting many troubles, unless other features support it. If it bends backward into the dip of the hand towards the mount of the Moon, following the shape of a semicircle, it suggests imprisonment. 50

The line beginning from the line of Life and passing through the Liver line, to the mount of Saturn—and if there it touch the Saturnia—threatens imprisonment.

The line that starts from the Life line and goes through the Liver line to the mount of Saturn—and if it touches the Saturnia there—suggests imprisonment.

Morality. The Belt of Venus.

This line of itself, unless there be other testimony to counteract it, is sufficient to indicate fulness of nature to appreciate the opposite sex, while the want of it denotes (except in a measure given by the fulness of the mount of Venus, etc.) coldness, unnaturalness for the other sex, and usually a cold, insipid partner, a poor, neglectful mother or father. But if this line have a sister line, that is, a small line running parallel with the Girdle, it argues intemperance and lust in both sexes and baseness in sexual matters—a filthy person. If this line be divided or broken up by various lines it denotes losses and infamy by reason of these lusts.

This line alone, unless there’s other evidence to contradict it, is enough to show an abundance of natural qualities that help someone appreciate the opposite sex, while a lack of it indicates (unless balanced by the fullness of Venus's mount, etc.) coldness, unnatural feelings toward the other sex, and typically a distant, uninspiring partner, or a neglectful mother or father. However, if this line has a sister line, which is a small line running parallel to the Girdle, it suggests excess and desire in both genders and a lack of morals when it comes to sexual matters—a promiscuous person. If this line is divided or interrupted by various lines, it signifies losses and disgrace due to these desires.

The Line of Mars. Bravery and Strength.

This line is sometimes called the sister line to the line of Life because it is often found running parallel with that line and denotes increased vital force—courage, because it strengthens the heart and thus the energy. When clear and well-defined it presages a long and active life, with little or no diseases. People with this line will suffer largely from gout, rheumatism and apoplexy if they take 51stimulants of any kind, inasmuch as the person will have sufficient energy of himself, and all stimulation which will increase the vascular action will only impede and retard the heart's action, like too much oil to a machine. This line strengthens all things denoted by the line of Life, and if clear and decidedly red it promises great success in war.

This line is sometimes referred to as the sister line to the line of Life because it often runs parallel to it and signifies increased vitality—courage—since it boosts heart strength and overall energy. When it’s clear and well-defined, it indicates a long and active life with few or no illnesses. People with this line are likely to suffer from gout, rheumatism, and strokes if they use any kind of stimulants because the person already has enough energy on their own, and any stimulation that increases blood flow will only hinder and slow down the heart's function, similar to adding too much oil to a machine. This line enhances everything associated with the line of Life, and if it’s clear and distinctly red, it suggests significant success in battle.

The Rule for Identifying the Planets.

When a figure similar to that used by astronomers in designating the planets is found on the mount particularly set aside for that planet, as on the mount of Jupiter there is the figure ♃, and on the mount of Saturn there is the sign ♄, on Apollo the sign ☉, on the mount of Mercury there is the sign ☿, and on the thick part of the thumb you find a similar sign ♀, on the mount of the moon the sign ☽, on Mars' place the figure ♂, and so on, then they are termed benevolent. How far, however, this is relevant to the subject I do not state, but I should rather advise the student to treat this with great care, although the marks given underneath will be found of value when placed as indicated.

When a symbol similar to the ones used by astronomers to identify the planets appears on the specific area associated with that planet, such as the symbol ♃ on the area for Jupiter, ♄ for Saturn, ☉ for Apollo, ☿ for Mercury,

The planets are considered unfortunate when confused lines, broken semicircle, gridiron marks, or signs contrary to the mounts indicated above, as ♃ to mount of Jupiter, and so on, are found on the mounts or places.

The planets are seen as unlucky when there are confusing lines, broken semicircles, grid patterns, or signs that go against the mounts mentioned earlier, like ♃ to the mount of Jupiter, and so on, that appear on the mounts or areas.

Chiromancers generally teach that the first joints near the mount of the finger indicate the early age, the second, the flourishing state of manhood, and the last old age. But our opinion is that the planets shown by the nativity of the persons do, in their proper order, manifest their marks and characters whether for good or bad.

Chiromancers usually say that the first joints near the base of the finger represent youth, the second represents the prime of life, and the last signifies old age. However, we believe that the planets indicated by a person's birth chart reveal their traits and characteristics, whether positive or negative, in their specific order.

"Of these excellent essays we cannot speak too highly; they will prove a new revelation to our scientifically inclined readers and demonstrate conclusively the impregnable basis of ancient Aryan Science, which did not neglect the PSYCHIC and MENTAL DATA which the modern scientific world MUST acknowledge ere long, and so enter upon an entire 'Reformation' of its methods and hypotheses. The whole science of the Tatwas is founded on that which is termed 'Vibration' or 'Motion' and opens up possibilities which readers of 'THE SECRET DOCTRINE' alone at present can foresee."—Lucifer.

"These amazing essays deserve high praise; they will offer a new insight to our scientifically minded readers and clearly show the solid foundation of ancient Aryan science, which did not ignore the psychic and mental data that the modern scientific world must eventually recognize, leading to a complete 'Reformation' of its methods and theories. The entire science of the Tatwas is based on what is called 'Vibration' or 'Motion' and reveals possibilities that only readers of 'THE SECRET DOCTRINE' can currently envision."—Lucifer.

The Dream of Ravan. A Mystery.
Cloth, 8vo. 2/6 net.

"It is beyond question that the unknown writer of this work was both a scholar and a mystic. That he had studied the Râmâyana from the original texts and was a master of Vedântic psychology is amply manifested; that he was a mystic himself and spoke of things that were realities to him and not mere empty speculations, is evident to every earnest student of Indian theosophical literature. In no other western publication have the three 'states' of man's consciousness been so strikingly and so intelligibly set forth as by our author. In this work the mystic and student of yoga will recognise many a home truth but slightly veiled, and many an important secret wholly disclosed."

It is clear that the unknown writer of this work was both a scholar and a mystic. His deep study of the Râmâyana from the original texts and mastery of Vedantic psychology is clearly evident. He was a mystic himself, discussing things that were real to him, not just empty theories, which is obvious to every serious student of Indian theosophical literature. No other Western publication has presented the three 'states' of human consciousness as clearly and compellingly as this author has. In this work, both the mystic and yoga student will recognize many familiar truths, though they may be slightly obscured, as well as many important secrets fully revealed.

"Not since 1804 has any English version of the two famous Pythagorean treatises included in this volume appeared in book form. Of their importance it is sufficient to state that they have been justly held in the highest esteem by Mystics from an early period to the present time. This has also been the case with the Somnium Scipionis or Vision of Scipio, Cicero's famous essay. L. O.'s able essay will be found most valuable to students."

"Sound; Fire; Yoga; and Symbolism are the subjects treated of in this most excellent book. The essay upon Yoga, the Kingly Science of the Soul whereby a man may attain to that Divine Wisdom which is his birthright, deserves to be read of all men. To lovers of the Scriptures of the World the essay on 'Symbolism' will appeal strongly and will be found most helpful, for in those Ancient Writings the most important truths are frequently veiled from the superficial reader by an allegory or a symbol, and in this essay the reader will find a clue to the method by which the study of symbols may be approached with beneficial results. Considerable light is thrown upon some of the very complex symbols pertaining to Indian Philosophies."

"Sound, Fire, Yoga, and Symbolism are the topics covered in this outstanding book. The essay on Yoga, the Royal Science of the Soul that enables a person to reach the Divine Wisdom that is their birthright, is essential reading for everyone. Those who love the Scriptures of the World will find the essay on 'Symbolism' particularly engaging and useful, as many crucial truths in those Ancient Writings are often obscured from the casual reader by allegories or symbols. This essay provides insight into how to effectively study symbols for beneficial outcomes. It sheds considerable light on some of the intricate symbols related to Indian Philosophies."

THE YOGA OF CHRIST: or the Science of the Soul.

"This book appeals especially to that large class of devout souls who find neither satisfying Truth nor edifying practice in Modern Christianity; who believe, nevertheless, that Christ had a message for them, and that somewhere hidden beneath the noise of words, and the misinterpretations of sectarians, a Truth, divine and living, may be found: to them the following pages will bring, if not the full radiance of Christ's illuminating Love, at least many valuable suggestions for thought, and aids in the solution of difficult problems. That Christianity, the religion which the West has made peculiarly its own, should be reverentially taught by 'an Indian' from an Indian point of view, is in itself unusual, may be regarded as a happy omen of the ultimate breaking down of those barriers of Sectarianism which have hitherto been potent in dividing the English people from sympathetic communion with the natives of India."

"This book is especially for the many devout individuals who find neither satisfying truth nor meaningful practice in modern Christianity; who still believe that Christ had a message for them, and that somewhere beneath all the noise of words and the misinterpretations by different groups, a divine and living truth can be discovered. The following pages will offer them, if not the full brilliance of Christ's illuminating love, at least many valuable ideas for reflection and help in solving tough problems. The fact that Christianity, a religion the West has uniquely embraced, is being reverently taught by 'an Indian' from an Indian perspective is itself unusual and could be seen as a hopeful sign of the eventual breakdown of the sectarian barriers that have long kept the English people from connecting with the people of India."
