PREFACE.

This book is pragmatical, not philosophical; a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. It is intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward. It is for those who have, so far, found neither the time, the means, nor the opportunity to go deeply into the study of metaphysics, but who want results and who are willing to take the conclusions of science as a basis for action, without going into all the processes by which those conclusions were reached.

This book is practical, not theoretical; a hands-on guide, not an essay on ideas. It's meant for people whose biggest concern is making money; those who want to get rich first and think about it later. It’s for those who haven’t had the time, resources, or chances to delve deeply into metaphysics, but who seek results and are ready to use scientific conclusions as a foundation for action, without worrying about all the steps it took to arrive at those conclusions.

It is expected that the reader will take the fundamental statements upon faith, just as he would take statements concerning a law of electrical action if they were promulgated by a Marconi or[6] an Edison; and, taking the statements upon faith, that he will prove their truth by acting upon them without fear or hesitation. Every man or woman who does this will certainly get rich; for the science herein applied is an exact science, and failure is impossible. For the benefit, however, of those who wish to investigate philosophical theories and so secure a logical basis for faith, I will here cite certain authorities.

It’s expected that the reader will accept the basic statements on faith, just like they would trust statements about electrical laws if they were announced by someone like Marconi or Edison; and, by accepting these statements on faith, they will prove their truth by acting on them without fear or hesitation. Anyone who does this will definitely become wealthy; because the science discussed here is precise, and failure is not an option. However, for those who want to explore philosophical theories to establish a logical foundation for their faith, I will reference certain authorities.

The monistic theory of the universe—the theory that One is All, and that All is One; that one Substance manifests itself as the seeming many elements of the material world—is of Hindu origin, and has been gradually winning its way into the thought of the western world for two hundred years. It is the foundation of all the Oriental philosophies, and of those of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibnitz, Schopenhauer, Hegel, and Emerson.

The monistic theory of the universe—the idea that One is All, and All is One; that one Substance shows itself as the many elements we see in the material world—comes from Hinduism and has been slowly making its way into Western thought for the past two hundred years. It forms the basis of all Eastern philosophies, as well as those of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibnitz, Schopenhauer, Hegel, and Emerson.

The reader who would dig to the philosophical foundations is advised to[7] read Hegel and Emerson; and he will do well to read “The Eternal News,” a very excellent pamphlet published by J. J. Brown, 300 Cathcart Road, Govanhill, Glasgow, Scotland. He may also find some help in a series of articles written by the author, which were published in Nautilus (Holyoke, Mass.) during the spring and summer of 1909, under the title “What is Truth?”

Anyone looking to explore the philosophical foundations is encouraged to[7] read Hegel and Emerson; additionally, it would be beneficial to check out “The Eternal News,” a great pamphlet published by J. J. Brown, 300 Cathcart Road, Govanhill, Glasgow, Scotland. They may also find useful insights in a series of articles written by the author, which were published in Nautilus (Holyoke, Mass.) during the spring and summer of 1909, titled “What is Truth?”

In writing this book I have sacrificed all other considerations to plainness and simplicity of style, so that all might understand. The plan of action laid down herein was deduced from the conclusions of philosophy; it has been thoroughly tested, and bears the supreme test of practical experiment; it works. If you wish to know how the conclusions were arrived at, read the writings of the authors mentioned above; and if you wish to reap the fruits of their philosophies in actual practice, read this book and do exactly as it tells you to do.

In writing this book, I've prioritized clarity and simplicity, ensuring that everyone can understand it. The approach outlined here is based on philosophical conclusions; it has been extensively tested and passes the ultimate test of practical application—it works. If you want to know how these conclusions were reached, check out the works of the authors mentioned earlier; and if you want to benefit from their philosophies in real life, read this book and follow the instructions exactly as given.

CHAPTER I.
The Right to Be Wealthy.

Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich. No man can rise to his greatest possible height in talent or soul development unless he has plenty of money; for to unfold the soul and to develop talent he must have many things to use, and he cannot have these things unless he has money to buy them with.

No matter what people say about the virtues of poverty, the truth is that you can't truly live a full or successful life without being wealthy. A person cannot reach their highest potential in talent or personal growth unless they have enough money; to nurture the soul and develop talents, one needs various resources, and those resources require money to acquire.

Man develops in mind, soul, and body by making use of things, and society is so organized that man must have money in order to become the possessor of things; therefore, the basis of all advancement for man must be the science of getting rich.

Man develops in mind, soul, and body by using things, and society is structured in such a way that a person needs money to own things; therefore, the foundation of all progress for individuals must be the knowledge of how to acquire wealth.

[10]

[10]

The object of all life is development; and everything that lives has an inalienable right to all the development it is capable of attaining.

The purpose of all life is growth; and everything that lives has an undeniable right to all the growth it can achieve.

Man’s right to life means his right to have the free and unrestricted use of all the things which may be necessary to his fullest mental, spiritual, and physical unfoldment; or, in other words, his right to be rich.

Man's right to live means he has the right to freely and fully use all the things necessary for his complete mental, spiritual, and physical development; in other words, his right to be wealthy.

In this book, I shall not speak of riches in a figurative way; to be really rich does not mean to be satisfied or contented with a little. No man ought to be satisfied with a little if he is capable of using and enjoying more. The purpose of Nature is the advancement and unfoldment of life; and every man should have all that can contribute to the power, elegance, beauty, and richness of life; to be content with less is sinful.

In this book, I won't talk about wealth in a figurative sense; being truly rich doesn't mean being satisfied or content with a little. No one should be satisfied with a little if they have the ability to use and enjoy more. Nature's purpose is to promote growth and development in life, and everyone should have everything that contributes to the power, elegance, beauty, and richness of life; being content with less is wrong.

The man who owns all he wants for the living of all the life he is capable of living is rich; and no man who has[11] not plenty of money can have all he wants. Life has advanced so far, and become so complex, that even the most ordinary man or woman requires a great amount of wealth in order to live in a manner that even approaches completeness. Every person naturally wants to become all that he is capable of becoming; this desire to realize innate possibilities is inherent in human nature; we cannot help wanting to be all that we can be. Success in life is becoming what you want to be; you can become what you want to be only by making use of things, and you can have the free use of things only as you become rich enough to buy them. To understand the science of getting rich is therefore the most essential of all knowledge.

The person who has everything they need to fully live their life is truly rich; and no one without plenty of money can have all they desire. Life has progressed so much and gotten so complicated that even the average person needs a significant amount of wealth to live in a way that feels fulfilling. Everyone naturally wants to reach their full potential; this desire to realize our inherent possibilities is part of being human; we can't help but want to be all that we can be. Achieving success in life means becoming who you want to be; you can only become what you want by utilizing resources, and you can only freely use resources if you have enough wealth to acquire them. Therefore, understanding the principles of acquiring wealth is the most crucial knowledge of all.

There is nothing wrong in wanting to get rich. The desire for riches is really the desire for a richer, fuller, and more abundant life; and that desire is praiseworthy. The man who does not[12] desire to live more abundantly is abnormal, and so the man who does not desire to have money enough to buy all he wants is abnormal.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to get rich. The desire for wealth is really the desire for a richer, fuller, and more abundant life; and that desire is admirable. A person who doesn’t want to live more abundantly is unusual, and likewise, someone who doesn’t want enough money to buy everything they desire is also unusual.

There are three motives for which we live; we live for the body, we live for the mind, and we live for the soul. No one of these is better or holier than the other; all are alike desirable, and no one of the three—body, mind, or soul—can live fully if either of the others is cut short of full life and expression. It is not right or noble to live only for the soul and deny mind or body; and it is wrong to live for the intellect and deny body and soul.

There are three reasons why we live; we live for the body, we live for the mind, and we live for the soul. None of these is better or more sacred than the others; all are equally valuable, and none of the three—body, mind, or soul—can fully thrive if either of the others is neglected. It’s not right or honorable to live only for the soul while ignoring the mind or body; and it’s wrong to focus solely on intellect at the expense of the body and soul.

We are all acquainted with the loathsome consequences of living for the body and denying both mind and soul; and we see that real life means the complete expression of all that man can give forth through body, mind, and soul. Whatever he may say, no man can be really happy or satisfied unless his body is living fully in every function, and[13] unless the same is true of his mind and his soul. Wherever there is unexpressed possibility, or function not performed, there is unsatisfied desire. Desire is possibility seeking expression, or function seeking performance.

We all know the terrible results of focusing solely on the body while neglecting both the mind and soul; and we understand that true life means fully expressing everything a person can share through their body, mind, and soul. No matter what one claims, no one can be genuinely happy or fulfilled unless their body is functioning at its best, and the same goes for their mind and soul. Wherever there is untapped potential or an unfulfilled function, there is unfulfilled desire. Desire is potential looking for expression, or function looking for action.

Man cannot live fully in body without good food, comfortable clothing, and warm shelter; and without freedom from excessive toil. Rest and recreation are also necessary to his physical life.

A person can't fully thrive without good food, comfortable clothes, and warm shelter; and without freedom from excessive work. Rest and leisure are also essential for their physical well-being.

He cannot live fully in mind without books and time to study them, without opportunity for travel and observation, or without intellectual companionship.

He can’t fully live in his mind without books and time to study them, without the chance to travel and observe, or without intellectual companionship.

To live fully in mind he must have intellectual recreations, and must surround himself with all the objects of art and beauty he is capable of using and appreciating.

To live fully in mind, he needs intellectual activities and should surround himself with all the art and beauty he can use and appreciate.

To live fully in soul, man must have love; and love is denied expression by poverty.

To live fully in the spirit, a person must have love; and love is stifled by poverty.

Man’s highest happiness is found in[14] the bestowal of benefits on those he loves; love finds its most natural and spontaneous expression in giving. The man who has nothing to give cannot fill his place as a husband or father, as a citizen, or as a man. It is in the use of material things that man finds full life for his body, develops his mind, and unfolds his soul. It is therefore of supreme importance to him that he should be rich.

Man’s greatest happiness comes from giving benefits to those he loves; love naturally and spontaneously expresses itself through giving. A man who has nothing to give cannot fulfill his role as a husband or father, as a citizen, or as a person. It's through the use of material things that a man discovers a full life for his body, nurtures his mind, and develops his soul. Therefore, it is extremely important for him to be wealthy.

It is perfectly right that you should desire to be rich; if you are a normal man or woman you cannot help doing so. It is perfectly right that you should give your best attention to the Science of Getting Rich, for it is the noblest and most necessary of all studies. If you neglect this study, you are derelict in your duty to yourself, to God, and to humanity; for you can render God and humanity no greater service than to make the most of yourself.

It's completely natural for you to want to be wealthy; if you're an ordinary person, you can't help but feel that way. It's entirely appropriate for you to focus on the Science of Getting Rich, because it's the most important and valuable of all subjects. If you ignore this study, you're failing in your responsibility to yourself, to God, and to society; there’s no greater service you can provide to God and humanity than to make the most out of yourself.

CHAPTER II.
There's a science to becoming wealthy.

There is a Science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic. There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches; once these laws are learned and obeyed by any man, he will get rich with mathematical certainty.

There is a science to getting rich, and it's as precise as algebra or arithmetic. There are specific laws that control the process of accumulating wealth; once these laws are understood and followed by anyone, they will become rich with mathematical certainty.

The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way; those who do things in this Certain Way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich; while those who do not do things in this Certain Way, no matter how hard they work or how able they are, remain poor.

The ownership of money and property comes from doing things a certain way; those who do things this way, whether intentionally or by chance, become wealthy; while those who don’t follow this way, no matter how hard they work or how talented they are, stay poor.

It is a natural law that like causes always produce like effects; and, therefore, any man or woman who learns to[16] do things in this Certain Way will infallibly get rich.

It’s a natural law that similar causes always create similar effects; therefore, anyone who learns to[16] do things in this Certain Way will definitely get rich.

That the above statement is true is shown by the following facts:—

That the statement above is true is demonstrated by the following facts:—

Getting rich is not a matter of environment, for, if it were, all the people in certain neighborhoods would become wealthy; the people of one city would all be rich, while those of other towns would all be poor; or the inhabitants of one state would roll in wealth, while those of an adjoining state would be in poverty.

Getting rich isn’t just about where you live, because if it were, everyone in certain neighborhoods would be wealthy. People from one city would all be rich, while those from other towns would be poor; or the residents of one state would be flush with cash, while those from a neighboring state would be living in poverty.

But everywhere we see rich and poor living side by side, in the same environment, and often engaged in the same vocations. When two men are in the same locality, and in the same business, and one gets rich while the other remains poor, it shows that getting rich is not, primarily, a matter of environment. Some environments may be more favorable than others, but when two men in the same business are in the same neighborhood, and one gets rich[17] while the other fails, it indicates that getting rich is the result of doing things in a Certain Way.

But everywhere we see rich and poor living next to each other, in the same environment, and often working in the same jobs. When two people are in the same area, and in the same line of work, and one becomes wealthy while the other stays poor, it shows that becoming rich isn’t just about the environment. Some environments might be more advantageous than others, but when two people in the same business are in the same neighborhood, and one gets rich[17] while the other struggles, it suggests that becoming wealthy is the result of doing things in a certain way.

And further, the ability to do things in this Certain Way is not due solely to the possession of talent, for many people who have great talent remain poor, while others who have very little talent get rich.

And furthermore, the ability to do things in this Specific Way isn't just because of talent, since many people with a lot of talent stay poor, while others with very little talent become wealthy.

Studying the people who have got rich, we find that they are an average lot in all respects, having no greater talents and abilities than other men. It is evident that they do not get rich because they possess talents and abilities that other men have not, but because they happen to do things in a Certain Way.

Studying the people who have gotten rich, we find that they are an average group in every way, having no greater talents or abilities than others. It's clear that they don't get rich because they have talents or abilities that others lack, but because they simply do things in a Certain Way.

Getting rich is not the result of saving, or “thrift”; many very penurious people are poor, while free spenders often get rich.

Getting rich isn't just about saving or being thrifty; many very frugal people remain poor, while those who spend freely often become wealthy.

Nor is getting rich due to doing things which others fail to do; for two men in the same business often do[18] almost exactly the same things, and one gets rich while the other remains poor or becomes a bankrupt.

Nor does becoming rich come from doing things that others fail to do; two men in the same business often do[18] almost exactly the same things, yet one gets rich while the other stays poor or goes bankrupt.

From all these things, we must come to the conclusion that getting rich is the result of doing things in a Certain Way.

From all these things, we must conclude that becoming wealthy is the result of doing things in a specific way.

If getting rich is the result of doing things in a Certain Way, and if like causes always produce like effects, then any man or woman who can do things in that way can become rich, and the whole matter is brought within the domain of exact science.

If becoming wealthy comes from doing things in a specific way, and if similar causes lead to similar outcomes, then anyone who can do things that way can get rich, and the whole thing falls within the realm of precise science.

The question arises here, whether this Certain Way may not be so difficult that only a few may follow it. This cannot be true, as we have seen, so far as natural ability is concerned. Talented people get rich, and blockheads get rich; intellectually brilliant people get rich, and very stupid people get rich; physically strong people get rich, and weak and sickly people get rich.

The question here is whether this Certain Way might be so challenging that only a select few can follow it. That can't be true, as we've observed, in terms of natural ability. Smart people get rich, and fools get rich; intellectually gifted people get rich, and very dull people get rich; physically strong people get rich, and weak and sickly individuals get rich.

Some degree of ability to think and understand is, of course, essential; but[19] in so far as natural ability is concerned, any man or woman who has sense enough to read and understand these words can certainly get rich.

Some ability to think and understand is obviously important; but [19] when it comes to natural talent, anyone who has enough sense to read and understand these words can definitely get rich.

Also, we have seen that it is not a matter of environment. Location counts for something; one would not go to the heart of the Sahara and expect to do successful business.

Also, we've observed that it's not just about the environment. Location matters; you wouldn't go to the middle of the Sahara and expect to run a successful business.

Getting rich involves the necessity of dealing with men, and of being where there are people to deal with; and if these people are inclined to deal in the way you want to deal, so much the better. But that is about as far as environment goes.

Getting rich means you have to interact with people and be in places where people are around; if those people are willing to engage in the way you want, that's even better. But that's about all there is to the environment.

If anybody else in your town can get rich, so can you; and if anybody else in your state can get rich, so can you.

If anyone else in your town can get rich, so can you; and if anyone else in your state can get rich, so can you.

Again, it is not a matter of choosing some particular business or profession. People get rich in every business, and in every profession; while their next door neighbors in the same vocation remain in poverty.

Again, it's not about picking a specific business or profession. People can become wealthy in any industry or field, while their next-door neighbors in the same line of work stay poor.

[20]

[20]

It is true that you will do best in a business which you like, and which is congenial to you; and if you have certain talents which are well developed, you will do best in a business which calls for the exercise of those talents.

It's true that you'll perform best in a business that you enjoy and that suits you well; and if you have certain talents that are well-developed, you'll excel in a business that requires those talents.

Also, you will do best in a business which is suited to your locality; an ice-cream parlor would do better in a warm climate than in Greenland, and a salmon fishery will succeed better in the Northwest than in Florida, where there are no salmon.

Also, you will thrive in a business that's right for your area; an ice cream shop would perform better in a warm climate than in Greenland, and a salmon fishery will do better in the Northwest than in Florida, where there are no salmon.

But, aside from these general limitations, getting rich is not dependent upon your engaging in some particular business, but upon your learning to do things in a Certain Way. If you are now in business, and anybody else in your locality is getting rich in the same business, while you are not getting rich, it is because you are not doing things in the same Way that the other person is doing them.

But aside from these general limitations, becoming wealthy isn’t about being involved in a specific business, but rather about learning to do things in a Certain Way. If you’re currently in business and someone else in your area is getting rich in the same field while you’re not making money, it’s because you’re not doing things in the same Way that the other person is.

No one is prevented from getting rich[21] by lack of capital. True, as you get capital the increase becomes more easy and rapid; but one who has capital is already rich, and does not need to consider how to become so. No matter how poor you may be, if you begin to do things in the Certain Way you will begin to get rich; and you will begin to have capital. The getting of capital is a part of the process of getting rich; and it is a part of the result which invariably follows the doing of things in the Certain Way.

No one is stopped from getting rich[21] because they lack capital. It's true that as you gain capital, the growth becomes easier and faster; but someone who already has capital is already wealthy and doesn’t need to think about how to become that way. No matter how poor you are, if you start doing things the Certain Way, you will begin to get rich and start accumulating capital. Gaining capital is part of the process of becoming wealthy, and it’s a result that always follows when you do things the Certain Way.

You may be the poorest man on the continent, and be deeply in debt; you may have neither friends, influence, nor resources; but if you begin to do things in this Way, you must infallibly begin to get rich, for like causes must produce like effects. If you have no capital, you can get capital; if you are in the wrong business, you can get into the right business; if you are in the wrong location, you can go to the right location; and you can do so by beginning in your[22] present business and in your present location to do things in the Certain Way which causes success.

You might be the poorest person on the continent, struggling with debt; you might not have any friends, influence, or resources; but if you start doing things this Way, you will definitely start to get rich, because similar causes lead to similar effects. If you don’t have any capital, you can acquire capital; if you’re in the wrong business, you can switch to the right business; if you’re in the wrong location, you can move to the right location; and you can do this by starting in your[22] current business and in your current location to do things in the Certain Way that leads to success.

[23]

[23]

CHAPTER III.
Is Opportunity Controlled?

No man is kept poor because opportunity has been taken away from him; because other people have monopolized the wealth, and have put a fence around it. You may be shut off from engaging in business in certain lines, but there are other channels open to you. Probably it would be hard for you to get control of any of the great railroad systems; that field is pretty well monopolized. But the electric railway business is still in its infancy, and offers plenty of scope for enterprise; and it will be but a very few years until traffic and transportation through the air will become a great industry, and in all its branches will give employment to hundreds of thousands, and perhaps to millions, of people. Why not turn[24] your attention to the development of aerial transportation, instead of competing with J. J. Hill and others for a chance in the steam railway world?

No one stays poor because opportunities have been taken away from them; it’s not because others have hoarded wealth and locked it away. You might find it difficult to enter certain businesses, but there are plenty of other paths for you. It may be tough to gain control of major railroad systems since that sector is pretty much dominated. However, the electric railway industry is still emerging and presents lots of opportunities for innovation; in just a few years, air travel and transportation will become a massive industry, employing hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions, of people. Why not focus your efforts on developing air transportation instead of competing with J. J. Hill and others for a spot in the steam railway business?

It is quite true that if you are a workman in the employ of the steel trust you have very little chance of becoming the owner of the plant in which you work; but it is also true that if you will commence to act in a Certain Way, you can soon leave the employ of the steel trust; you can buy a farm of from ten to forty acres, and engage in business as a producer of foodstuffs. There is great opportunity at this time for men who will live upon small tracts of land and cultivate the same intensively; such men will certainly get rich. You may say that it is impossible for you to get the land, but I am going to prove to you that it is not impossible, and that you can certainly get a farm if you will go to work in a Certain Way.

It’s true that if you're a worker for the steel trust, you have very little chance of owning the plant where you work. But it’s also true that if you start acting in a specific way, you can quickly leave the steel trust; you can buy a farm of ten to forty acres and start your own business as a food producer. There’s a huge opportunity right now for people who can live on small plots of land and farm them intensively; those people will definitely get rich. You might think it’s impossible for you to acquire land, but I’m going to show you that it’s not impossible, and that you can definitely own a farm if you work in a specific way.

At different periods the tide of opportunity sets in different directions, according[25] to the needs of the Whole, and the particular stage of social evolution which has been reached. At present, in America, it is setting toward agriculture and the allied industries and professions. To-day, opportunity is open before the farmer in his line more than before the factory worker in his line. It is open before the business man who supplies the farmer more than before the one who supplies the factory worker; and before the professional man who waits upon the farmer more than before the one who serves the working class.

At different times, the tide of opportunity shifts in various directions, depending on the needs of the whole and the current stage of social development. Right now, in America, it’s leaning toward agriculture and related industries and professions. Today, there are more opportunities available to farmers than to factory workers. There are more chances for businesspeople who support farmers compared to those who supply factory workers, and more opportunities for professionals who assist farmers than for those serving the working class.

There is abundance of opportunity for the man who will go with the tide, instead of trying to swim against it.

There are plenty of opportunities for the person who goes with the flow, instead of trying to fight against it.

So the factory workers, either as individuals or as a class, are not deprived of opportunity. The workers are not being “kept down” by their masters; they are not being “ground” by the trusts and combinations of capital. As a class, they are where they are because[26] they do not do things in a Certain Way. If the workers of America chose to do so, they could follow the example of their brothers in Belgium and other countries, and establish great department stores and co-operative industries; they could elect men of their own class to office, and pass laws favoring the development of such co-operative industries; and in a few years they could take peaceable possession of the industrial field.

So, the factory workers, either as individuals or as a group, aren't lacking in opportunities. They're not being held back by their bosses; they're not being crushed by the trusts and large corporations. As a group, they're in their current situation because they aren't acting in a certain way. If the workers in America decided to, they could follow the lead of their counterparts in Belgium and other countries, and set up big department stores and cooperative businesses; they could elect people from their own class to office and pass laws that support the growth of these cooperative industries; and in a few years, they could peacefully take over the industrial sector.

The working class may become the master class whenever they will begin to do things in a Certain Way; the law of wealth is the same for them as it is for all others. This they must learn; and they will remain where they are as long as they continue to do as they do. The individual worker, however, is not held down by the ignorance or the mental slothfulness of his class; he can follow the tide of opportunity to riches, and this book will tell him how.

The working class can become the ruling class when they start to act in a certain way; the rules of wealth apply to them just like they do for everyone else. They need to understand this; and they will stay in their current situation as long as they keep doing what they're doing. However, the individual worker isn’t limited by the ignorance or laziness of their class; they can ride the wave of opportunity to achieve wealth, and this book will guide them on how to do it.

No one is kept in poverty by a shortness[27] in the supply of riches; there is more than enough for all. A palace as large as the capitol at Washington might be built for every family on earth from the building material in the United States alone; and under intensive cultivation, this country would produce wool, cotton, linen, and silk enough to clothe each person in the world finer than Solomon was arrayed in all his glory; together with food enough to feed them all luxuriously. The visible supply is practically inexhaustible; and the invisible supply really IS inexhaustible.

No one stays in poverty because there isn’t enough wealth to go around; there’s more than enough for everyone. A palace as big as the Capitol in Washington could be built for every family on the planet just from the building materials available in the United States alone. With proper farming, this country could produce enough wool, cotton, linen, and silk to dress each person in the world even more lavishly than Solomon was in all his splendor, along with plenty of food to feed them all abundantly. The visible supply is nearly limitless; and the invisible supply truly is limitless.

Everything you see on earth is made from one original substance, out of which all things proceed.

Everything you see on Earth comes from one original substance, from which all things are made.

New forms are constantly being made, and older ones are dissolving; but all are shapes assumed by One Thing.

New forms are always being created, and older ones are fading away; but all are just shapes taken on by One Thing.

There is no limit to the supply of Formless Stuff, or Original Substance. The universe is made out of it; but it[28] was not all used in making the universe. The spaces in, through, and between the forms of the visible universe are permeated and filled with the Original Substance; with the Formless Stuff; with the raw material of all things. Ten thousand times as much as has been made might still be made, and even then we should not have exhausted the supply of universal raw material.

There’s an unlimited supply of Formless Stuff, or Original Substance. The universe is made from it, but it wasn’t all used up in creating the universe. The spaces inside, throughout, and between the forms of the visible universe are filled with the Original Substance; with the Formless Stuff; with the raw material for everything. Ten thousand times more than what already exists could still be created, and even then we wouldn’t have tapped out the supply of universal raw material.

No man, therefore, is poor because nature is poor, or because there is not enough to go around.

No one is poor because nature is lacking or because there isn't enough to share.

Nature is an inexhaustible storehouse of riches; the supply will never run short. Original Substance is alive with creative energy, and is constantly producing more forms. When the supply of building material is exhausted, more will be produced; when the soil is exhausted so that foodstuffs and materials for clothing will no longer grow upon it, it will be renewed or more soil will be made. When all the gold and silver has been dug from the earth, if[29] man is still in such a stage of social development that he needs gold and silver, more will be produced from the Formless. The Formless Stuff responds to the needs of man; it will not let him be without any good thing.

Nature is an endless source of wealth; the supply will never run out. The Original Substance is full of creative energy and constantly generating new forms. When the supply of building materials is used up, more will be made; when the soil is depleted to the point where food and materials for clothing can no longer grow, it will be replenished or new soil will be created. When all the gold and silver has been mined from the earth, if humanity is still at a stage of social development where gold and silver are needed, more will be produced from the Formless. The Formless Stuff responds to human needs; it will ensure that no one goes without anything good.

This is true of man collectively; the race as a whole is always abundantly rich, and if individuals are poor, it is because they do not follow the Certain Way of doing things which makes the individual man rich.

This is true of humanity as a whole; society is always incredibly wealthy, and if some people are struggling financially, it’s because they don’t follow the proven methods that lead to individual prosperity.

The Formless Stuff is intelligent; it is stuff which thinks. It is alive, and is always impelled toward more life.

The Formless Stuff is intelligent; it’s material that thinks. It’s alive and always driven toward more life.

It is the natural and inherent impulse of life to seek to live more; it is the nature of intelligence to enlarge itself, and of consciousness to seek to extend its boundaries and find fuller expression. The universe of forms has been made by Formless Living Substance, throwing itself into form in order to express itself more fully.

It’s a natural instinct of life to want to live more; it’s in the nature of intelligence to expand itself, and of consciousness to try to push its limits and find greater expression. The universe of forms was created by Formless Living Substance, which took shape to express itself more completely.

The universe is a great Living Presence,[30] always moving inherently toward more life and fuller functioning.

The universe is a powerful Living Presence,[30] constantly evolving and striving for more life and greater function.

Nature is formed for the advancement of life; its impelling motive is the increase of life. For this cause, everything which can possibly minister to life is bountifully provided; there can be no lack unless God is to contradict himself and nullify his own works.

Nature is designed for the growth of life; its driving force is the enhancement of life. For this reason, everything that can support life is generously provided; there can’t be any shortage unless God contradicts Himself and undermines His own creations.

You are not kept poor by lack in the supply of riches; it is a fact which I shall demonstrate a little farther on that even the resources of the Formless Supply are at the command of the man or woman who will act and think in a Certain Way.

You’re not kept from wealth by a shortage of resources; it’s a fact I’ll prove a bit later that even the assets of the Formless Supply are available to anyone who will act and think in a Certain Way.

CHAPTER IV.
The First Principle in the Science of Getting Wealthy.

Thought is the only power which can produce tangible riches from the Formless Substance. The stuff from which all things are made is a substance which thinks, and a thought of form in this substance produces the form.

Thought is the only force that can create real wealth from the formless substance. The material that everything is made from is a substance that thinks, and a thought of form within this substance produces the form.

Original Substance moves according to its thoughts; every form and process you see in nature is the visible expression of a thought in Original Substance. As the Formless Stuff thinks of a form, it takes that form; as it thinks of a motion, it makes that motion. That is the way all things were created. We live in a thought world, which is part of a thought universe.

Original Substance moves according to its thoughts; every shape and process you see in nature is the visible expression of a thought in Original Substance. As the Formless Stuff thinks of a form, it takes that form; as it thinks of a motion, it makes that motion. That is how everything was created. We live in a world of thoughts, which is part of a universe of thoughts.

[32]

[32]

The thought of a moving universe extended throughout Formless Substance, and the Thinking Stuff moving according to that thought, took the form of systems of planets, and maintains that form. Thinking Substance takes the form of its thought, and moves according to the thought. Holding the idea of a circling system of suns and worlds, it takes the form of these bodies, and moves them as it thinks. Thinking the form of a slow-growing oak tree, it moves accordingly, and produces the tree, though centuries may be required to do the work. In creating, the Formless seems to move according to the lines of motion it has established; the thought of an oak tree does not cause the instant formation of a full-grown tree, but it does start in motion the forces which will produce the tree, along established lines of growth.

The idea of a moving universe spread throughout the Formless Substance, and the Thinking Stuff, influenced by that idea, took the shape of planetary systems and continues to maintain that shape. Thinking Substance takes on the form of its thoughts and acts based on them. By envisioning a system of suns and worlds in motion, it embodies these bodies and moves them as it imagines. When it thinks of a slowly growing oak tree, it acts accordingly and brings forth the tree, even if it takes centuries to complete the process. In creation, the Formless appears to operate according to the pathways of motion it has set; the thought of an oak tree doesn’t instantly create a fully grown tree, but it activates the forces that will lead to the tree’s growth along pre-established paths.

Every thought of form, held in thinking Substance, causes the creation of the form, but always, or at least generally,[33] along lines of growth and action already established.

Every thought of form, kept in mind Substance, leads to the creation of the form, but usually, or at least generally,[33] along paths of growth and action that are already established.

The thought of a house of a certain construction, if it were impressed upon Formless Substance, might not cause the instant formation of the house; but it would cause the turning of creative energies already working in trade and commerce into such channels as to result in the speedy building of the house. And if there were no existing channels through which the creative energy could work, then the house would be formed directly from primal substance, without waiting for the slow processes of the organic and inorganic world.

The idea of a house with a specific design, if it were impressed upon formless substance, might not lead to the immediate creation of the house; however, it would redirect the creative energies that are already active in trade and commerce into pathways that would result in the quick construction of the house. And if there were no existing pathways for the creative energy to flow, then the house would be built directly from the primal substance, without having to go through the slow processes of the organic and inorganic world.

No thought of form can be impressed upon Original Substance without causing the creation of the form.

No idea of a shape can be imposed on Original Substance without resulting in the creation of that shape.

Man is a thinking center, and can originate thought. All the forms that man fashions with his hands must first exist in his thought; he cannot shape a thing until he has thought that thing.

Man is a thinking being and can create thoughts. Everything that man constructs with his hands must first exist in his mind; he cannot create something until he has imagined that thing.

[34]

[34]

And so far man has confined his efforts wholly to the work of his hands; he has applied manual labor to the world of forms, seeking to change or modify those already existing. He has never thought of trying to cause the creation of new forms by impressing his thoughts upon Formless Substance.

And so far, humans have focused entirely on the work of their hands; they have used manual labor to engage with the world of forms, trying to change or modify what already exists. They have never considered the possibility of creating new forms by influencing Formless Substance with their thoughts.

When man has a thought-form, he takes material from the forms of nature, and makes an image of the form which is in his mind. He has, so far, made little or no effort to co-operate with Formless Intelligence; to work “with the Father.” He has not dreamed that he can “do what he seeth the Father doing.” Man re-shapes and modifies existing forms by manual labor; he has given no attention to the question whether he may not produce things from Formless Substance by communicating his thoughts to it. We propose to prove that he may do so; to prove that any man or woman may do so, and to show how. As our first step,[35] we must lay down three fundamental propositions.

When a person has an idea, they take materials from the forms found in nature and create an image of what’s in their mind. Up to now, they’ve made little or no effort to work together with Formless Intelligence or to collaborate “with the Father.” They haven’t even considered that they can “do what they see the Father doing.” People reshape and modify existing forms through physical work; they haven’t focused on whether they could produce new things from Formless Substance by communicating their thoughts to it. We aim to prove that they can; to show that anyone can, and we’ll explain how. As our first step,[35] we need to establish three fundamental propositions.

First, we assert that there is one original formless stuff, or substance, from which all things are made. All the seemingly many elements are but different presentations of one element; all the many forms found in organic and inorganic nature are but different shapes, made from the same stuff. And this stuff is thinking stuff; a thought held in it produces the form of the thought. Thought, in thinking substance, produces shapes. Man is a thinking center, capable of original thought; if man can communicate his thought to original thinking substance, he can cause the creation, or formation, of the thing he thinks about. To summarize this:—

First, we assert that there is one original formless material, or substance, from which everything is made. All the seemingly different elements are just various manifestations of one element; all the diverse forms found in both living and non-living nature are simply different shapes made from the same material. And this material is thinking material; a thought held within it produces the shape of that thought. Thought, in thinking substance, creates forms. Humans are thinking centers, capable of original thought; if a person can convey their thoughts to the original thinking substance, they can bring into existence the things they envision. To summarize this:—

There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.

There is a material of thought from which everything is created, and which, in its original form, spreads through, fills, and occupies the gaps in the universe.

A thought, in this substance, produces[36] the thing that is imaged by the thought.

A thought, in this form, creates[36] the thing that is envisioned by the thought.

Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.

A person can create ideas in their mind, and by projecting those ideas onto shapeless material, can bring into existence the things they think about.

It may be asked if I can prove these statements; and without going into details, I answer that I can do so, both by logic and experience.

It might be questioned whether I can prove these statements; and without getting into specifics, I reply that I can, through both logic and experience.

Reasoning back from the phenomena of form and thought, I come to one original thinking substance; and reasoning forward from this thinking substance, I come to man’s power to cause the formation of the thing he thinks about.

Reasoning from the observable aspects of form and thought, I arrive at one fundamental thinking substance; and when I reason from this thinking substance, I reach the conclusion that humans have the ability to create what they think about.

And by experiment, I find the reasoning true; and this is my strongest proof.

And through experimentation, I find the reasoning to be true; and this is my strongest evidence.

If one man who reads this book gets rich by doing what it tells him to do, that is evidence in support of my claim; but if every man who does what it tells him to do gets rich, that is positive[37] proof until some one goes through the process and fails. The theory is true until the process fails; and this process will not fail, for every man who does exactly what this book tells him to do will get rich.

If one person who reads this book becomes wealthy by following its advice, that supports my claim; but if everyone who follows its guidance becomes wealthy, that is solid proof until someone goes through the steps and fails. The theory stands true until the method fails; and this method won't fail, because anyone who does exactly what this book instructs will achieve wealth.

I have said that men get rich by doing things in a Certain Way; and in order to do so, men must become able to think in a certain way.

I’ve said that people get wealthy by doing things a certain way; and to achieve this, they need to learn to think in a specific way.

A man’s way of doing things is the direct result of the way he thinks about things.

A man’s approach to doing things comes directly from how he thinks about them.

To do things in the way you want to do them, you will have to acquire the ability to think the way you want to think; this is the first step toward getting rich.

To achieve things the way you want, you'll need to develop the ability to think the way you intend to; this is the first step toward becoming wealthy.

To think what you want to think is to think TRUTH, regardless of appearances.

Thinking what you want to think is thinking TRUTH, no matter how it looks.

Every man has the natural and inherent power to think what he wants to think, but it requires far more effort to do so than it does to think[38] the thoughts which are suggested by appearances. To think according to appearances is easy; to think truth regardless of appearances is laborious, and requires the expenditure of more power than any other work man is called upon to perform.

Every person has the natural and inherent ability to think whatever they want, but it takes a lot more effort to do so than it does to simply go along with the thoughts suggested by what we see. It's easy to think based on appearances; thinking truthfully, regardless of appearances, is hard work and demands more energy than any other task a person has to tackle.

There is no labor from which most people shrink as they do from that of sustained and consecutive thought; it is the hardest work in the world. This is especially true when truth is contrary to appearances. Every appearance in the visible world tends to produce a corresponding form in the mind which observes it; and this can only be prevented by holding the thought of the TRUTH.

There’s no job that most people avoid like they do the work of sustained and continuous thinking; it’s the toughest work out there. This is especially the case when the truth goes against what seems obvious. Everything we see in the world tends to create a matching idea in our minds that observe it; and the only way to avoid this is by focusing on the TRUTH.

To look upon the appearance of disease will produce the form of disease in your own mind, and ultimately in your body, unless you hold the thought of the truth, which is that there is no disease; it is only an appearance, and the reality is health.

To look at the signs of illness will create the idea of illness in your mind, and eventually in your body, unless you focus on the truth, which is that there is no illness; it's just an illusion, and the real state is health.

[39]

[39]

To look upon the appearances of poverty will produce corresponding forms in your own mind, unless you hold to the truth that there is no poverty; there is only abundance.

Seeing the signs of poverty will create similar thoughts in your mind, unless you stick to the truth that there is no poverty; there is only abundance.

To think health when surrounded by the appearances of disease, or to think riches when in the midst of appearances of poverty, requires power; but he who acquires this power becomes a MASTER MIND. He can conquer fate; he can have what he wants.

To focus on health when faced with signs of illness, or to think of wealth when surrounded by signs of poverty, takes strength; but the person who gains this strength becomes a MASTER MIND. They can overcome destiny; they can achieve what they desire.

This power can only be acquired by getting hold of the basic fact which is behind all appearances; and that fact is that there is one Thinking Substance, from which and by which all things are made.

This power can only be gained by understanding the fundamental truth behind everything; and that truth is that there is one Thinking Substance, from which and through which all things are created.

Then we must grasp the truth that every thought held in this substance becomes a form, and that man can so impress his thoughts upon It as to cause them to take form and become visible things.

Then we must understand the truth that every thought held in this substance becomes a shape, and that a person can impress their thoughts onto it in a way that makes them take form and become visible objects.

When we realize this, we lose all[40] doubt and fear, for we know that we can create what we want to create; we can get what we want to have, and can become what we want to be. As a first step toward getting rich, you must believe the three fundamental statements given previously in this chapter; and in order to emphasize them, I repeat them here:—

When we understand this, we shed all doubt and fear, because we know we can create what we want to create; we can achieve what we want to have, and we can become what we want to be. As the first step toward getting rich, you must believe the three fundamental statements mentioned earlier in this chapter; to highlight them, I'm repeating them here:—

There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.

There is a thinking substance from which everything is made, and which, in its original form, permeates, penetrates, and fills the empty spaces of the universe.

A thought, in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.

A thought, in this form, creates the thing that is imagined by the thought.

Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.

A person can shape things in their mind, and by putting their thoughts onto formless material, they can make what they envision come to life.

You must lay aside all other concepts of the universe than this monistic one; and you must dwell upon this until it is fixed in your mind, and has become your[41] habitual thought. Read these creed statements over and over again; fix every word upon your memory, and meditate upon them until you firmly believe what they say. If a doubt comes to you, cast it aside as a sin. Do not listen to arguments against this idea; do not go to churches or lectures where a contrary concept of things is taught or preached. Do not read magazines or books which teach a different idea; if you get mixed up in your faith, all your efforts will be in vain.

You need to put aside all other ideas about the universe except this one, which is based on monism; and you should focus on this until it is firmly established in your mind and becomes your usual way of thinking. Read these statements of belief repeatedly; commit every word to memory, and reflect on them until you truly believe what they express. If any doubts arise, dismiss them as wrong. Don’t pay attention to arguments against this idea; avoid churches or lectures where alternate views are presented. Don’t read magazines or books that promote a different perspective; if your faith gets confused, all your efforts will be wasted.

Do not ask why these things are true, nor speculate as to how they can be true; simply take them on trust.

Don't ask why these things are true, or wonder how they can be true; just accept them on trust.

The science of getting rich begins with the absolute acceptance of this faith.

The science of getting rich starts with fully embracing this belief.

[42]

CHAPTER V.
Enhancing Life.

You must get rid of the last vestige of the old idea that there is a Deity whose will it is that you should be poor, or whose purposes may be served by keeping you in poverty.

You need to let go of the last remnants of the old belief that there’s a God who wants you to be poor, or whose goals can be achieved by keeping you in poverty.

The Intelligent Substance which is All, and in all, and which lives in All and lives in you, is a consciously Living Substance. Being a consciously living substance, It must have the natural and inherent desire of every living intelligence for increase of life. Every living thing must continually seek for the enlargement of its life, because life, in the mere act of living, must increase itself.

The Intelligent Substance that is everything, is in everything, and lives in everything, including you, is a consciously Living Substance. As a consciously living substance, it has the natural and inherent desire that every living intelligence has for the growth of life. Every living thing must constantly seek to expand its life, because simply by living, life must grow itself.

A seed, dropped into the ground, springs into activity, and in the act of living produces a hundred more seeds;[43] life, by living, multiplies itself. It is forever Becoming More; it must do so, if it continues to be at all.

A seed, planted in the soil, starts to grow, and by living, it creates a hundred more seeds;[43] life, by living, expands itself. It is always Becoming More; it has to, if it wants to continue existing at all.

Intelligence is under this same necessity for continuous increase. Every thought we think makes it necessary for us to think another thought; consciousness is continually expanding. Every fact we learn leads us to the learning of another fact; knowledge is continually increasing. Every talent we cultivate brings to the mind the desire to cultivate another talent; we are subject to the urge of life, seeking expression, which ever drives us on to know more, to do more, and to be more.

Intelligence also requires constant growth. Every thought we have makes it necessary for us to have another thought; our consciousness is always expanding. Every fact we learn leads us to discover another fact; our knowledge is always increasing. Every skill we develop creates a desire to develop another skill; we are driven by the urge to express ourselves, which continually pushes us to know more, do more, and be more.

In order to know more, do more, and be more we must have more; we must have things to use, for we learn, and do, and become, only by using things. We must get rich, so that we can live more.

To know more, do more, and be more, we need to have more; we need to have things to use because we learn, do, and become only by using things. We need to get wealthy so we can live more.

The desire for riches is simply the capacity for larger life seeking fulfillment; every desire is the effort of an[44] unexpressed possibility to come into action. It is power seeking to manifest which causes desire. That which makes you want more money is the same as that which makes the plant grow; it is Life, seeking fuller expression.

The desire for wealth is really just a drive for a richer life looking for satisfaction; every desire is an attempt by an unexpressed possibility to take form. It’s the energy wanting to express itself that fuels desire. What makes you crave more money is the same thing that encourages a plant to grow; it’s Life wanting to express itself more fully.

The One Living Substance must be subject to this inherent law of all life; it is permeated with the desire to live more; that is why it is under the necessity of creating things.

The One Living Substance has to follow this fundamental law of all life; it is filled with the urge to live more; that's why it needs to create things.

The One Substance desires to live more in you; hence it wants you to have all the things you can use.

The One Substance wants to exist more within you; that's why it desires for you to have everything you can utilize.

It is the desire of God that you should get rich. He wants you to get rich because he can express himself better through you if you have plenty of things to use in giving him expression. He can live more in you if you have unlimited command of the means of life.

It is God's wish for you to become wealthy. He wants you to be rich because He can express Himself more effectively through you when you have an abundance of resources to share. He can work through you more fully if you have unlimited access to the means of living.

The universe desires you to have everything you want to have.

The universe wants you to have everything you desire.

Nature is friendly to your plans.

Nature is supportive of your plans.

[45]

[45]

Everything is naturally for you.

Everything is meant for you.

Make up your mind that this is true.

Make a decision that this is true.

It is essential, however, that your purpose should harmonize with the purpose that is in All.

It is essential, however, that your purpose should align with the purpose that exists in everything.

You must want real life, not mere pleasure or sensual gratification. Life is the performance of function; and the individual really lives only when he performs every function, physical, mental, and spiritual, of which he is capable, without excess in any.

You need to seek a genuine life, not just enjoyment or physical pleasure. Life is about fulfilling responsibilities; a person truly lives only when they engage in all the functions—physical, mental, and spiritual—that they are capable of, without going overboard in any area.

You do not want to get rich in order to live swinishly, for the gratification of animal desires; that is not life. But the performance of every physical function is a part of life, and no one lives completely who denies the impulses of the body a normal and healthful expression.

You don’t want to get rich just to live excessively or satisfy animalistic desires; that’s not what life is about. But engaging in every physical function is part of life, and no one truly lives if they deny their bodily impulses a normal and healthy expression.

You do not want to get rich solely to enjoy mental pleasures, to get knowledge, to gratify ambition, to outshine others, to be famous. All these are a legitimate part of life, but the man who[46] lives for the pleasures of the intellect alone will only have a partial life, and he will never be satisfied with his lot.

You shouldn't aim to get rich just to enjoy intellectual pleasures, gain knowledge, satisfy your ambition, outshine others, or seek fame. While these things are valid parts of life, someone who only lives for intellectual pleasures will only experience a partial life and will never be truly satisfied with what they have.

You do not want to get rich solely for the good of others, to lose yourself for the salvation of mankind, to experience the joys of philanthropy and sacrifice. The joys of the soul are only a part of life; and they are no better or nobler than any other part.

You don't want to get rich just to benefit others, to sacrifice yourself for the salvation of humanity, or to find joy in giving and sacrifice. The joys of the soul are just one aspect of life, and they aren't any better or nobler than any other aspect.

You want to get rich in order that you may eat, drink, and be merry when it is time to do these things; in order that you may surround yourself with beautiful things, see distant lands, feed your mind, and develop your intellect; in order that you may love men and do kind things, and be able to play a good part in helping the world to find truth.

You want to get rich so you can enjoy food, drinks, and good times when the moment is right; so you can fill your life with beautiful things, explore faraway places, expand your knowledge, and grow your intellect; so you can care for others and perform kind acts, and be in a position to help the world discover truth.

But remember that extreme altruism is no better and no nobler than extreme selfishness; both are mistakes.

But keep in mind that extreme generosity is no better or more noble than extreme selfishness; both are errors.

Get rid of the idea that God wants you to sacrifice yourself for others, and[47] that you can secure his favor by doing so; God requires nothing of the kind.

Get rid of the idea that God wants you to sacrifice yourself for others and[47] that you can earn His favor by doing that; God asks for nothing like that.

What he wants is that you should make the most of yourself, for yourself, and for others; and you can help others more by making the most of yourself than in any other way.

What he wants is for you to make the most of yourself, for yourself, and for others; and you can help others more by maximizing your own potential than in any other way.

You can make the most of yourself only by getting rich; so it is right and praiseworthy that you should give your first and best thought to the work of acquiring wealth.

You can fully realize your potential only by becoming wealthy; therefore, it's important and commendable that you focus your initial and highest efforts on the task of gaining wealth.

Remember, however, that the desire of Substance is for all, and its movements must be for more life to all; it cannot be made to work for less life to any, because it is equally in all, seeking riches and life.

Remember, though, that the desire of Substance is for everyone, and its actions should promote more life for all; it can't be made to create less life for anyone, because it's equally in all, seeking abundance and life.

Intelligent Substance will make things for you, but it will not take things away from some one else and give them to you.

Intelligent Substance will create things for you, but it won't take things from someone else and give them to you.

You must get rid of the thought of competition. You are to create, not to compete for what is already created.

You need to let go of the idea of competition. You're here to create, not to fight for what's already been created.

[48]

[48]

You do not have to take anything away from any one.

You don't have to take anything from anyone.

You do not have to drive sharp bargains.

You don't need to negotiate hard for a deal.

You do not have to cheat, or to take advantage. You do not need to let any man work for you for less than he earns.

You don't have to cheat or take advantage of others. You shouldn't make anyone work for less than what they deserve.

You do not have to covet the property of others, or to look at it with wishful eyes; no man has anything of which you cannot have the like, and that without taking what he has away from him.

You don't need to envy what others have or look at it with longing; no one possesses anything that you can't also have, and you can do so without taking it from them.

You are to become a creator, not a competitor; you are going to get what you want, but in such a way that when you get it every other man will have more than he has now.

You are meant to be a creator, not a competitor; you'll achieve what you want, but in a way that ensures everyone else ends up with more than they currently have.

I am aware that there are men who get a vast amount of money by proceeding in direct opposition to the statements in the paragraph above, and may add a word of explanation here. Men of the plutocratic type, who become very rich, do so sometimes purely by[49] their extraordinary ability on the plane of competition; and sometimes they unconsciously relate themselves to Substance in its great purposes and movements for the general racial upbuilding through industrial evolution. Rockefeller, Carnegie, Morgan, et al., have been the unconscious agents of the Supreme in the necessary work of systematizing and organizing productive industry; and in the end, their work will contribute immensely toward increased life for all. Their day is nearly over; they have organized production, and will soon be succeeded by the agents of the multitude, who will organize the machinery of distribution.

I know there are men who make a lot of money by doing the exact opposite of what I just mentioned, and I’d like to clarify that. Wealthy individuals, like the plutocrats, sometimes get rich solely because of their exceptional competitive skills; other times, they unknowingly connect with broader forces aimed at improving society through industrial progress. Rockefeller, Carnegie, Morgan, et al., have unknowingly played a crucial role in the necessary work of organizing and systematizing industries. Ultimately, their efforts will greatly enhance life for everyone. Their time is almost up; they have streamlined production, and will soon be replaced by those who will organize the distribution process.

The multi-millionaires are like the monster reptiles of the prehistoric eras; they play a necessary part in the evolutionary process, but the same Power which produced them will dispose of them. And it is well to bear in mind that they have never been really rich; a record of the private lives of most of[50] this class will show that they have really been the most abject and wretched of the poor.

The multi-millionaires are like the giant reptiles from prehistoric times; they play a necessary role in the evolutionary process, but the same Power that created them will take them away. It’s important to remember that they have never truly been rich; a look into the private lives of most of[50] this group will reveal that they have actually been the most miserable and destitute of the poor.

Riches secured on the competitive plane are never satisfactory and permanent; they are yours to-day, and another’s to-morrow. Remember, if you are to become rich in a scientific and certain way, you must rise entirely out of the competitive thought. You must never think for a moment that the supply is limited. Just as soon as you begin to think that all the money is being “cornered” and controlled by bankers and others, and that you must exert yourself to get laws passed to stop this process, and so on; in that moment you drop into the competitive mind, and your power to cause creation is gone for the time being; and what is worse, you will probably arrest the creative movements you have already instituted.

Wealth gained through competition is never truly fulfilling or permanent; it belongs to you today, but it could be someone else's tomorrow. If you want to get rich in a sure and scientific way, you have to completely step away from competitive thinking. You should never believe for a second that the supply is limited. The moment you start thinking that all the money is being "cornered" and controlled by bankers and others, and that you need to push for laws to stop this, you fall back into a competitive mindset, and your ability to create is temporarily lost. What's worse, you might hinder the creative efforts you've already started.

KNOW that there are countless millions of dollars’ worth of gold in the mountains of the earth, not yet brought[51] to light; and know that if there were not, more would be created from Thinking Substance to supply your needs.

KNOW that there are countless millions of dollars’ worth of gold in the mountains of the earth, not yet brought[51] to light; and know that if there weren’t, more would be created from Thinking Substance to meet your needs.

KNOW that the money you need will come, even if it is necessary for a thousand men to be led to the discovery of new gold mines to-morrow.

KNOW that the money you need will come, even if it takes a thousand people to discover new gold mines tomorrow.

Never look at the visible supply; look always at the limitless riches in Formless Substance, and KNOW that they are coming to you as fast as you can receive and use them. Nobody, by cornering the visible supply, can prevent you from getting what is yours.

Never focus on what's visibly available; always keep an eye on the endless wealth in Formless Substance, and KNOW that they are coming to you as quickly as you can receive and utilize them. No one can stop you from getting what belongs to you by cornering the visible supply.

So never allow yourself to think for an instant that all the best building spots will be taken before you get ready to build your house, unless you hurry. Never worry about the trusts and combines, and get anxious for fear they will soon come to own the whole earth. Never get afraid that you will lose what you want because some other person “beats you to it.” That cannot possibly happen; you are not seeking anything[52] that is possessed by anybody else; you are causing what you want to be created from Formless Substance, and the supply is without limits. Stick to the formulated statement:—

So don't ever let yourself think for even a second that all the best building spots will be gone before you’re ready to build your house, unless you rush. Don’t worry about the trusts and big companies, or get anxious that they’ll soon own everything. Don’t be afraid that you’ll miss out on what you want because someone else “gets it first.” That can't possibly happen; you aren’t chasing after something someone else owns; you’re bringing what you want into existence from Formless Substance, and the supply is limitless. Stick to the formulated statement:—

There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.

There's a substance of thought from which everything is made, and which, in its original form, spreads, seeps, and fills the gaps of the universe.

A thought, in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.

A thought, in this form, creates what the thought envisions.

Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.

A person can picture things in their mind, and by projecting their thoughts onto shapeless material, they can bring into existence what they are imagining.

CHAPTER VI.
How Wealth Comes to You.

When I say that you do not have to drive sharp bargains, I do not mean that you do not have to drive any bargains at all, or that you are above the necessity for having any dealings with your fellow men. I mean that you will not need to deal with them unfairly; you do not have to get something for nothing, but can give to every man more than you take from him.

When I say you don't have to negotiate hard, I don't mean you shouldn't negotiate at all or that you're above dealing with others. What I mean is you won't need to be unfair; you don't have to take advantage of anyone, but you can give everyone more than you take from them.

You cannot give every man more in cash market value than you take from him, but you can give him more in use value than the cash value of the thing you take from him. The paper, ink, and other material in this book may not be worth the money you paid for it; but if the ideas suggested by it bring[54] you thousands of dollars, you have not been wronged by those who sold it to you; they have given you a great use value for a small cash value.

You can't give someone more cash value than what you take from them, but you can offer more in practical value than the cash value of what you take. The paper, ink, and other materials in this book might not be worth the money you spent on it; however, if the ideas it presents earn you thousands of dollars, you haven't been cheated by the sellers; they've provided you with significant value for a low price.

Let us suppose that I own a picture by one of the great artists, which, in any civilized community, is worth thousands of dollars. I take it to Baffin Bay, and by “salesmanship” induce an Eskimo to give a bundle of furs worth $500 for it. I have really wronged him, for he has no use for the picture; it has no use value to him; it will not add to his life.

Let’s say I have a painting by a well-known artist that's worth thousands of dollars in any civilized society. I take it to Baffin Bay and use my persuasive skills to convince an Eskimo to trade a bundle of furs worth $500 for it. I’ve actually wronged him since he has no use for the painting; it has no practical value to him and won't enhance his life.

But suppose I give him a gun worth $50 for his furs; then he has made a good bargain. He has use for the gun; it will get him many more furs and much food; it will add to his life in every way; it will make him rich.

But let's say I give him a gun worth $50 for his furs; then he’s struck a great deal. He can actually use the gun; it’ll help him get a lot more furs and plenty of food; it’ll enhance his life in every way; it’ll make him wealthy.

When you rise from the competitive to the creative plane, you can scan your business transactions very strictly, and if you are selling any man anything which does not add more to his life than[55] the thing he gives you in exchange, you can afford to stop it. You do not have to beat anybody in business. And if you are in a business which does beat people, get out of it at once.

When you move from a competitive mindset to a creative one, you can closely evaluate your business dealings, and if you’re selling someone something that doesn’t improve their life more than what they’re giving you in return, you can choose to stop. You don't need to outdo anyone in business. And if you’re in a business that takes advantage of people, get out of it immediately.

Give every man more in use value than you take from him in cash value; then you are adding to the life of the world by every business transaction.

Give every person more in usefulness than you take from them in cash; then you are enriching the world with every business deal.

If you have people working for you, you must take from them more in cash value than you pay them in wages; but you can so organize your business that it will be filled with the principle of advancement, and so that each employee who wishes to do so may advance a little every day.

If you have employees, you need to get more cash value from them than you pay in wages; but you can organize your business in a way that fosters growth, allowing each employee who wants to improve to make progress every day.

You can make your business do for your employees what this book is doing for you. You can so conduct your business that it will be a sort of ladder, by which every employee who will take the trouble may climb to riches himself; and given the opportunity, if he will not do so it is not your fault.

You can set up your business to do for your employees what this book is doing for you. You can run your business in a way that acts like a ladder, allowing any employee who is willing to put in the effort to climb to success for themselves; and if they choose not to take that opportunity, that's not on you.

[56]

[56]

And finally, because you are to cause the creation of your riches from Formless Substance which permeates all your environment, it does not follow that they are to take shape from the atmosphere and come into being before your eyes.

And finally, since you're supposed to create your wealth from the formless substance that fills your environment, it doesn’t mean that it will take shape in the air and appear right in front of you.

If you want a sewing machine, for instance, I do not mean to tell you that you are to impress the thought of a sewing machine on Thinking Substance until the machine is formed without hands, in the room where you sit, or elsewhere. But if you want a sewing machine, hold the mental image of it with the most positive certainty that it is being made, or is on its way to you. After once forming the thought, have the most absolute and unquestioning faith that the sewing machine is coming; never think of it, or speak of it, in any other way than as being sure to arrive. Claim it as already yours.

If you want a sewing machine, I’m not saying you should focus on the idea of a sewing machine until it magically appears in the room with you, or anywhere else. But if you want a sewing machine, hold a clear mental picture of it with complete confidence that it is being created or is on its way to you. Once you’ve formed that thought, have unwavering faith that the sewing machine is coming; don’t think or talk about it in any way other than being certain it will arrive. Claim it as if it’s already yours.

It will be brought to you by the power of the Supreme Intelligence, acting[57] upon the minds of men. If you live in Maine, it may be that a man will be brought from Texas or Japan to engage in some transaction which will result in your getting what you want.

It will come to you through the power of Supreme Intelligence, influencing the minds of people. If you live in Maine, it's possible that someone will be brought in from Texas or Japan to participate in a deal that will lead to you getting what you desire.

If so, the whole matter will be as much to that man’s advantage as it is to yours.

If that's the case, the whole situation will benefit that guy just as much as it benefits you.

Do not forget for a moment that the Thinking Substance is through all, in all, communicating with all, and can influence all. The desire of Thinking Substance for fuller life and better living has caused the creation of all the sewing machines already made; and it can cause the creation of millions more, and will, whenever men set it in motion by desire and faith, and by acting in a Certain Way.

Do not forget for a moment that the Thinking Substance is everywhere, within everything, connecting with all, and can influence everything. The desire of the Thinking Substance for a fuller life and better living has led to the creation of all the sewing machines already made; and it can lead to the creation of millions more, and will, whenever people set it in motion through desire and faith, and by acting in a Certain Way.

You can certainly have a sewing machine in your house; and it is just as certain that you can have any other thing or things which you want, and which you will use for the advancement of your own life and the lives of others.

You can definitely have a sewing machine in your home; and it's just as certain that you can have anything else you want that will help improve your life and the lives of others.

[58]

[58]

You need not hesitate about asking largely; “it is your Father’s pleasure to give you the kingdom,” said Jesus.

You don't have to hold back when asking for a lot; "it is your Father's pleasure to give you the kingdom," Jesus said.

Original Substance wants to live all that is possible in you, and wants you to have all that you can or will use for the living of the most abundant life.

Original Substance wants to experience everything that’s possible within you and wants you to have everything you can or will need for living the fullest life.

If you fix upon your consciousness the fact that the desire you feel for the possession of riches is one with the desire of Omnipotence for more complete expression, your faith becomes invincible.

If you focus on the idea that your desire for wealth is connected to the desire of a higher power for fuller expression, your faith becomes unshakeable.

Once I saw a little boy sitting at a piano, and vainly trying to bring harmony out of the keys; and I saw that he was grieved and provoked by his inability to play real music. I asked him the cause of his vexation, and he answered, “I can feel the music in me, but I can’t make my hands go right.” The music in him was the URGE of Original Substance, containing all the possibilities of all life; all that there is of music was seeking expression through the child.

Once, I saw a little boy sitting at a piano, trying in vain to create harmony from the keys. I noticed he was upset and frustrated by his inability to play real music. I asked him what was bothering him, and he replied, “I can feel the music inside me, but I can’t make my hands move correctly.” The music within him was the drive of Original Substance, holding all the possibilities of life; everything that exists in music was trying to express itself through the child.

[59]

[59]

God, the One Substance, is trying to live and do and enjoy things through humanity. He is saying, “I want hands to build wonderful structures, to play divine harmonies, to paint glorious pictures; I want feet to run my errands, eyes to see my beauties, tongues to tell mighty truths and to sing marvelous songs,” and so on.

God, the One Substance, is trying to live, act, and experience things through humanity. He is saying, “I want hands to create amazing structures, to play beautiful harmonies, to paint stunning pictures; I want feet to carry out my tasks, eyes to appreciate my wonders, tongues to share powerful truths and to sing incredible songs,” and so on.

All that there is of possibility is seeking expression through men. God wants those who can play music to have pianos and every other instrument, and to have the means to cultivate their talents to the fullest extent; He wants those who can appreciate beauty to be able to surround themselves with beautiful things; He wants those who can discern truth to have every opportunity to travel and observe; He wants those who can appreciate dress to be beautifully clothed, and those who can appreciate good food to be luxuriously fed.

All the possibilities seek expression through people. God wants those who can create music to have pianos and other instruments, and to have the resources to develop their talents fully; He wants those who can appreciate beauty to surround themselves with beautiful things; He wants those who can recognize truth to have every chance to travel and explore; He wants those who value fashion to be stylishly dressed, and those who appreciate good food to enjoy fine dining.

He wants all these things because it is Himself that enjoys and appreciates[60] them; it is God who wants to play, and sing, and enjoy beauty, and proclaim truth, and wear fine clothes, and eat good foods.

He wants all these things because it's Himself that enjoys and appreciates[60] them; it's God who wants to play, sing, enjoy beauty, proclaim truth, wear nice clothes, and eat delicious food.

“It is God that worketh in you to will and to do,” said Paul.

“It is God who works in you to want and to act,” said Paul.

The desire you feel for riches is the Infinite, seeking to express Himself in you as He sought to find expression in the little boy at the piano.

The longing you have for wealth is the Infinite wanting to express itself through you, just like it sought to find expression in the little boy at the piano.

So you need not hesitate to ask largely.

So you shouldn't hesitate to ask a lot.

Your part is to focalize and express the desires of God.

Your role is to focus on and express God's desires.

This is a difficult point with most people; they retain something of the old idea that poverty and self-sacrifice are pleasing to God. They look upon poverty as a part of the plan, a necessity of nature. They have the idea that God has finished His work, and made all that He can make, and that the majority of men must stay poor because there is not enough to go around. They hold to so much of this erroneous thought that[61] they feel ashamed to ask for wealth; they try not to want more than a very modest competence, just enough to make them fairly comfortable.

This is a tough issue for many people; they still hold on to the old belief that poverty and self-denial are pleasing to God. They see poverty as part of the plan, a natural necessity. They think that God has completed His work and created all He can, and that most people must remain poor because there isn't enough to go around. They cling to such a misguided belief that[61] they feel embarrassed to ask for wealth; they try not to desire more than a very modest amount, just enough to be reasonably comfortable.

I recall now the case of one student who was told that he must get in mind a clear picture of the things he desired, so that the creative thought of them might be impressed on Formless Substance. He was a very poor man, living in a rented house, and having only what he earned from day to day; and he could not grasp the fact that all wealth was his. So, after thinking the matter over, he decided that he might reasonably ask for a new rug for the floor of his best room, and an anthracite coal stove to heat the house during the cold weather. Following the instructions given in this book, he obtained these things in a few months; and then it dawned upon him that he had not asked enough. He went through the house in which he lived, and planned all the improvements he would like to make in it;[62] he mentally added a bay window here and a room there, until it was complete in his mind as his ideal home; and then he planned its furnishings.

I remember a student who was advised to create a clear mental image of the things he wanted so that the idea of them could impress itself on the formless substance. He was a very poor man, living in a rented place, earning just enough to get by day to day; he couldn't quite believe that all wealth was available to him. After thinking it over, he figured he could reasonably ask for a new rug for the floor of his best room and an anthracite coal stove to heat the house during the winter. Following the guidance in this book, he got those things in just a few months; then he realized he hadn’t asked for enough. He walked through his house and envisioned all the improvements he would like to make; he mentally added a bay window here and an extra room there until he had created his ideal home in his mind, complete with plans for its furnishings.[62]

Holding the whole picture in his mind, he began living in the Certain Way, and moving toward what he wanted; and he owns the house now, and is rebuilding it after the form of his mental image. And now, with still larger faith, he is going on to get greater things. It has been unto him according to his faith, and it is so with you and with all of us.

Holding the entire picture in his mind, he started living in the Certain Way and moving toward what he wanted; now he owns the house and is renovating it to match his mental image. And now, with even greater faith, he's moving on to achieve bigger things. It has been true for him according to his faith, and it is the same for you and for all of us.

CHAPTER VII.
Thankfulness.

The illustrations given in the last chapter will have conveyed to the reader the fact that the first step toward getting rich is to convey the idea of your wants to the Formless Substance.

The illustrations provided in the last chapter will have shown the reader that the first step to becoming wealthy is to communicate your desires to the Formless Substance.

This is true, and you will see that in order to do so it becomes necessary to relate yourself to the Formless Intelligence in a harmonious way.

This is true, and you'll see that to achieve this, it's essential to connect with the Formless Intelligence in a harmonious manner.

To secure this harmonious relation is a matter of such primary and vital importance that I shall give some space to its discussion here, and give you instructions which, if you will follow them, will be certain to bring you into perfect unity of mind with God.

To maintain this harmonious relationship is of such fundamental and crucial importance that I will dedicate some space to discussing it here and provide you with guidance that, if you follow it, will definitely lead you to complete unity of mind with God.

The whole process of mental adjustment[64] and atonement can be summed up in one word, gratitude.

The entire process of mental adjustment[64] and atonement can be summed up in one word, gratitude.

First, you believe that there is one Intelligent Substance, from which all things proceed; second, you believe that this Substance gives you everything you desire; and third, you relate yourself to It by a feeling of deep and profound gratitude.

First, you believe that there is one Intelligent Substance that everything comes from; second, you believe that this Substance provides you with everything you want; and third, you connect with It by feeling deep and profound gratitude.

Many people who order their lives rightly in all other ways are kept in poverty by their lack of gratitude. Having received one gift from God, they cut the wires which connect them with Him by failing to make acknowledgment.

Many people who manage their lives well in every other way are held back by their lack of gratitude. After receiving one gift from God, they sever the connections that link them to Him by not expressing their thanks.

It is easy to understand that the nearer we live to the source of wealth, the more wealth we shall receive; and it is easy also to understand that the soul that is always grateful lives in closer touch with God than the one which never looks to Him in thankful acknowledgment.

It’s simple to see that the closer we are to the source of wealth, the more we will receive; and it’s also easy to see that a grateful soul is more connected to God than one that never acknowledges Him with thanks.

The more gratefully we fix our minds[65] on the Supreme when good things come to us, the more good things we will receive, and the more rapidly they will come; and the reason simply is that the mental attitude of gratitude draws the mind into closer touch with the source from which the blessings come.

The more we focus on the Supreme with gratitude when good things happen to us, the more good things we'll receive and the faster they will come. The reason is simple: maintaining a grateful mindset connects us more closely to the source of our blessings.

If it is a new thought to you that gratitude brings your whole mind into closer harmony with the creative energies of the universe, consider it well, and you will see that it is true. The good things you already have have come to you along the line of obedience to certain laws. Gratitude will lead your mind out along the ways by which things come; and it will keep you in close harmony with creative thought and prevent you from falling into competitive thought.

If it's a new idea to you that gratitude aligns your mind more closely with the creative energies of the universe, think about it carefully, and you'll realize it's true. The good things you already possess have come to you by following certain principles. Gratitude will guide your mind along the paths through which good things arrive; it will keep you in close alignment with creative thinking and help you avoid falling into competitive thinking.

Gratitude alone can keep you looking toward the All, and prevent you from falling into the error of thinking of the supply as limited; and to do that would be fatal to your hopes.

Gratitude alone can keep you focused on the Whole and prevent you from making the mistake of thinking that resources are limited; believing that would be detrimental to your hopes.

[66]

[66]

There is a Law of Gratitude, and it is absolutely necessary that you should observe the law, if you are to get the results you seek.

There’s a Law of Gratitude, and it’s crucial that you follow this law if you want to achieve the results you're looking for.

The law of gratitude is the natural principle that action and reaction are always equal, and in opposite directions.

The law of gratitude is the natural principle that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

The grateful outreaching of your mind in thankful praise to the Supreme is a liberation or expenditure of force; it cannot fail to reach that to which it is addressed, and the reaction is an instantaneous movement toward you.

The thankful expansion of your mind in praise to the Supreme is a release of energy; it will undoubtedly connect with what it is directed at, and the response is an immediate pull toward you.

“Draw nigh unto God, and He will draw nigh unto you.” That is a statement of psychological truth.

“Come close to God, and He will come close to you.” That is a statement of psychological truth.

And if your gratitude is strong and constant, the reaction in Formless Substance will be strong and continuous; the movement of the things you want will be always toward you. Notice the grateful attitude that Jesus took; how He always seems to be saying, “I thank Thee, Father, that Thou hearest me.” You cannot exercise much power without[67] gratitude; for it is gratitude that keeps you connected with Power.

And if your gratitude is strong and constant, the response in Formless Substance will be strong and ongoing; the things you want will always move towards you. Pay attention to the grateful attitude that Jesus had; He always seems to express, “I thank You, Father, that You hear me.” You can't wield much power without gratitude, because it's gratitude that keeps you connected to Power.

But the value of gratitude does not consist solely in getting you more blessings in the future. Without gratitude you cannot long keep from dissatisfied thought regarding things as they are.

But the value of gratitude isn't just about bringing you more blessings in the future. Without gratitude, you won't be able to avoid feeling dissatisfied with how things are for long.

The moment you permit your mind to dwell with dissatisfaction upon things as they are, you begin to lose ground. You fix attention upon the common, the ordinary, the poor, and the squalid and mean; and your mind takes the form of these things. Then you will transmit these forms or mental images to the Formless, and the common, the poor, the squalid, and mean will come to you.

The moment you allow yourself to focus on dissatisfaction with things as they are, you start to lose your progress. You concentrate on the ordinary, the mediocre, the impoverished, and the unpleasant, and your mindset begins to reflect these things. Then you end up sending these thoughts or mental images into the universe, and the ordinary, the poor, the unpleasant, and the mediocre will come back to you.

To permit your mind to dwell upon the inferior is to become inferior and to surround yourself with inferior things.

To let your mind focus on the lesser is to become lesser and to fill your life with lesser things.

On the other hand, to fix your attention on the best is to surround yourself with the best, and to become the best.

On the other hand, focusing on what's best means surrounding yourself with the best and becoming your best self.

[68]

[68]

The Creative Power within us makes us into the image of that to which we give our attention.

The creative power inside us shapes us into the kind of person we focus on.

We are Thinking Substance, and thinking substance always takes the form of that which it thinks about.

We are Thinking Substance, and thinking substance always takes the shape of what it thinks about.

The grateful mind is constantly fixed upon the best; therefore it tends to become the best; it takes the form or character of the best, and will receive the best.

The thankful mind is always focused on the best; as a result, it tends to become the best; it takes the shape or character of the best, and will attract the best.

Also, faith is born of gratitude. The grateful mind continually expects good things, and expectation becomes faith. The reaction of gratitude upon one’s own mind produces faith; and every outgoing wave of grateful thanksgiving increases faith. He who has no feeling of gratitude cannot long retain a living faith; and without a living faith you cannot get rich by the creative method, as we shall see in the following chapters.

Also, faith comes from gratitude. A grateful mindset constantly anticipates good things, and that anticipation turns into faith. The impact of gratitude on one’s own mind generates faith; and every expression of thankful appreciation boosts faith. Someone who doesn't feel gratitude can't maintain a vibrant faith for long; and without a vibrant faith, you can't achieve wealth through the creative method, as we will explore in the following chapters.

It is necessary, then, to cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good[69] thing that comes to you; and to give thanks continuously.

It is important, then, to develop the habit of being thankful for every good[69] thing that comes your way; and to keep expressing gratitude constantly.

And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.

And since everything has played a part in your growth, you should be grateful for all of it.

Do not waste time thinking or talking about the shortcomings or wrong actions of plutocrats or trust magnates. Their organization of the world has made your opportunity; all you get really comes to you because of them.

Don't waste time thinking or talking about the flaws or mistakes of wealthy elites or corporate tycoons. Their way of organizing the world has created your opportunities; everything you receive is ultimately because of them.

Do not rage against corrupt politicians; if it were not for politicians we should fall into anarchy, and your opportunity would be greatly lessened.

Don't get mad at corrupt politicians; without politicians, we would fall into chaos, and your chances would be significantly reduced.

God has worked a long time and very patiently to bring us up to where we are in industry and government, and He is going right on with His work. There is not the least doubt that He will do away with plutocrats, trust magnates, captains of industry, and politicians as soon as they can be spared; but in the meantime, behold they are all very good. Remember that they are all helping[70] to arrange the lines of transmission along which your riches will come to you, and be grateful to them all. This will bring you into harmonious relations with the good in everything, and the good in everything will move toward you.

God has been working for a long time and very patiently to bring us to where we are in business and government, and He is continuing His work. There’s no doubt that He will eliminate the wealthy elites, corporate tycoons, industry leaders, and politicians as soon as they are no longer needed; but in the meantime, they are all quite valuable. Remember that they are all contributing to the systems that will deliver your wealth to you, and appreciate them all. This will put you in a positive relationship with the good in everything, and the good in everything will gravitate toward you.

CHAPTER VIII.
Thinking in a Certain Way.

Turn back to chapter VI., and read again the story of the man who formed a mental image of his house, and you will get a fair idea of the initial step toward getting rich. You must form a clear and definite mental picture of what you want; you cannot transmit an idea unless you have it yourself.

Turn back to chapter VI., and read again the story of the man who formed a mental image of his house, and you will get a good understanding of the first step to becoming wealthy. You need to create a clear and specific mental image of what you want; you can't share an idea unless you fully grasp it yourself.

You must have it before you can give it; and many people fail to impress Thinking Substance because they have themselves only a vague and misty concept of the things they want to do, to have, or to become.

You need to have it before you can share it; and many people struggle to make a strong impression with Thinking Substance because they only have a vague and unclear idea of what they want to do, have, or become.

It is not enough that you should have a general desire for wealth “to do good with”; everybody has that desire.

It's not enough to just want wealth "to do good with"; everyone has that desire.

It is not enough that you should have[72] a wish to travel, see things, live more, etc. Everybody has those desires also. If you were going to send a wireless message to a friend, you would not send the letters of the alphabet in their order, and let him construct the message for himself; nor would you take words at random from the dictionary. You would send a coherent sentence; one which meant something. When you try to impress your wants upon Substance, remember that it must be done by a coherent statement; you must know what you want, and be definite.

It's not enough to just want to travel, see new things, live more, etc. Everyone has those desires too. If you were going to send a text message to a friend, you wouldn't just send the letters of the alphabet in order and expect them to figure it out; you wouldn’t randomly pick words from the dictionary either. You would send a clear sentence; something that makes sense. When you try to communicate your needs to the universe, remember that it has to be done through a clear statement; you need to know exactly what you want and be specific.

You can never get rich, or start the creative power into action, by sending out unformed longings and vague desires.

You can’t become wealthy or unleash your creative energy by expressing unfocused longings and unclear desires.

Go over your desires just as the man I have described went over his house; see just what you want, and get a clear mental picture of it as you wish it to look when you get it.

Review your desires just like the man I mentioned examined his house; understand exactly what you want, and create a clear mental image of it as you envision it when you achieve it.

That clear mental picture you must have continually in mind, as the sailor[73] has in mind the port toward which he is sailing the ship; you must keep your face toward it all the time. You must no more lose sight of it than the steersman loses sight of the compass.

That clear mental image should always be at the forefront of your mind, just like a sailor keeps the destination in mind while navigating the ship; you need to face it constantly. You should never lose sight of it, just as the helmsman never loses sight of the compass.

It is not necessary to take exercises in concentration, nor to set apart special times for prayer and affirmation, nor to “go into the silence,” nor to do occult stunts of any kind. These things are well enough, but all you need is to know what you want, and to want it badly enough so that it will stay in your thoughts.

You don’t need to practice concentration exercises, schedule specific times for prayer and affirmations, retreat into silence, or perform any mystical tricks. These activities are fine, but all you really need to do is know what you want and desire it strongly enough for it to remain in your mind.

Spend as much of your leisure time as you can in contemplating your picture, but no one needs to take exercises to concentrate his mind on a thing which he really wants; it is the things you do not really care about which require effort to fix your attention upon them.

Spend as much of your free time as you can thinking about your goals, but no one needs to practice focusing on something they genuinely want; it’s the things you don’t really care about that need effort to pay attention to.

And unless you really want to get rich, so that the desire is strong enough to hold your thoughts directed to the[74] purpose as the magnetic pole holds the needle of the compass, it will hardly be worth while for you to try to carry out the instructions given in this book.

And unless you genuinely want to get rich, with a desire that’s strong enough to keep your thoughts focused on that goal like a magnetic pole keeps a compass needle pointing north, it’s probably not worth it for you to attempt to follow the advice in this book.

The methods herein set forth are for people whose desire for riches is strong enough to overcome mental laziness and the love of ease, and make them work.

The methods outlined here are for those whose desire for wealth is strong enough to push them past mental laziness and a love for comfort, motivating them to take action.

The more clear and definite you make your picture, then, and the more you dwell upon it, bringing out all its delightful details, the stronger your desire will be; and the stronger your desire, the easier it will be to hold your mind fixed upon the picture of what you want.

The clearer and more specific you make your vision, and the more you focus on it, highlighting all its enjoyable details, the stronger your desire will become; and the stronger your desire, the easier it will be to keep your mind focused on the picture of what you want.

Something more is necessary, however, than merely to see the picture clearly. If that is all you do, you are only a dreamer, and will have little or no power for accomplishment.

Something more is needed, though, than just seeing the picture clearly. If that's all you do, you're just a dreamer and won't have much, if any, ability to achieve anything.

Behind your clear vision must be the purpose to realize it; to bring it out in tangible expression.

Behind your clear vision must be the purpose to make it happen; to bring it into tangible form.

And behind this purpose must be an[75] invincible and unwavering FAITH that the thing is already yours; that it is “at hand” and you have only to take possession of it.

And behind this goal must be an[75] unshakeable and steady FAITH that what you desire is already yours; that it is "within reach" and you just need to claim it.

Live in the new house, mentally, until it takes form around you physically. In the mental realm, enter at once into full enjoyment of the things you want.

Live in the new house, mentally, until it physically takes shape around you. In your mind, fully embrace and enjoy the things you desire right away.

“Whatsoever things ye ask for when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them,” said Jesus.

“What you ask for when you pray, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours,” said Jesus.

See the things you want as if they were actually around you all the time; see yourself as owning and using them. Make use of them in imagination just as you will use them when they are your tangible possessions. Dwell upon your mental picture until it is clear and distinct, and then take the Mental Attitude of Ownership toward everything in that picture. Take possession of it, in mind, in the full faith that it is actually yours. Hold to this mental ownership; do not waver for an instant in the faith that it is real.

See the things you want as if they are always around you; imagine yourself owning and using them. Use them in your imagination just like you will when they are real possessions. Focus on your mental image until it’s clear and vivid, then adopt the mindset of ownership toward everything in that image. Claim it in your mind, fully believing it's actually yours. Maintain this mental ownership; don’t doubt for a moment that it’s real.

[76]

[76]

And remember what was said in a preceding chapter about gratitude; be as thankful for it all the time as you expect to be when it has taken form. The man who can sincerely thank God for the things which as yet he owns only in imagination, has real faith. He will get rich; he will cause the creation of whatsoever he wants.

And remember what was mentioned in a preceding chapter about gratitude; be thankful for everything all the time, just like you expect to be when it actually materializes. The person who can genuinely thank God for the things they only have in their imagination right now has true faith. They will become wealthy; they will make whatever they desire come into existence.

You do not need to pray repeatedly for the things you want; it is not necessary to tell God about it every day.

You don't need to keep praying for the things you want; it's not necessary to remind God about it every day.

“Use not vain repetitions as the heathen do,” said Jesus to His pupils, “for your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things before ye ask Him.”

“Don't use empty words like the pagans do,” Jesus told His students, “because your Father knows what you need before you even ask Him.”

Your part is to intelligently formulate your desire for the things which make for a larger life, and to get these desires arranged into a coherent whole; and then to impress this Whole Desire upon the Formless Substance, which has the power and the will to bring you what you want.

Your role is to clearly define what you want for a more fulfilling life and organize these desires into a unified plan; then, impress this overall desire onto the formless substance, which has the ability and willingness to deliver what you seek.

[77]

[77]

You do not make this impression by repeating strings of words; you make it by holding the vision with unshakable PURPOSE to attain it, and with steadfast FAITH that you do attain it.

You don’t create this impression by just repeating phrases; you create it by keeping a clear vision with an unshakable PURPOSE to achieve it, and with unwavering FAITH that you will achieve it.

The answer to prayer is not according to your faith while you are talking, but according to your faith while you are working.

The answer to prayer doesn't depend on your faith when you're speaking, but on your faith when you're taking action.

You cannot impress the mind of God by having a special Sabbath day set apart to tell Him what you want, and then forgetting Him during the rest of the week. You cannot impress Him by having special hours to go into your closet and pray, if you then dismiss the matter from your mind until the hour of prayer comes again.

You can't impress God by setting aside a special Sabbath to ask for what you want and then ignoring Him the rest of the week. You won't impress Him by designating certain times to pray if you just forget about it until the next prayer time.

Oral prayer is well enough, and has its effect, especially upon yourself, in clarifying your vision and strengthening your faith; but it is not your oral petitions which get you what you want. In order to get rich you do not need a “sweet hour of prayer”; you need[78] to “pray without ceasing.” And by prayer I mean holding steadily to your vision, with the purpose to cause its creation into solid form, and the faith that you are doing so.

Oral prayer is fine and can have an impact, especially on yourself, by clarifying your vision and boosting your faith; however, it's not your spoken requests that give you what you want. To become wealthy, you don't need a “sweet hour of prayer”; you need to “pray without ceasing.” And by prayer, I mean maintaining focus on your vision, with the intention of bringing it into tangible form, and having the faith that you are achieving this.

“Believe that ye receive them.”

"Believe that you receive them."

The whole matter turns on receiving, once you have clearly formed your vision. When you have formed it, it is well to make an oral statement, addressing the Supreme in reverent prayer; and from that moment you must, in mind, receive what you ask for. Live in the new house; wear the fine clothes; ride in the automobile; go on the journey, and confidently plan for greater journeys. Think and speak of all the things you have asked for in terms of actual present ownership. Imagine an environment, and a financial condition exactly as you want them, and live all the time in that imaginary environment and financial condition. Mind, however, that you do not do this as a mere dreamer and castle builder; hold to the[79] FAITH that the imaginary is being realized, and to the PURPOSE to realize it. Remember that it is faith and purpose in the use of the imagination which make the difference between the scientist and the dreamer. And having learned this fact, it is here that you must learn the proper use of the Will.

The whole matter revolves around receiving, once you have clearly defined your vision. When you have established it, it's beneficial to make a verbal statement, addressing the Supreme in respectful prayer; and from that moment, you must mentally receive what you’re asking for. Live in the new home; wear the nice clothes; drive the car; go on the trip, and confidently plan for bigger adventures. Think and talk about all the things you've requested as if you already own them. Picture an environment and a financial situation exactly as you desire them, and continually immerse yourself in that imagined environment and financial state. However, be careful not to do this as just a dreamer or someone who builds castles in the air; hold onto the faith that the imaginary is becoming reality, and maintain the purpose to achieve it. Remember, it’s faith and purpose in your imaginative efforts that distinguish the scientist from the dreamer. And having grasped this concept, it’s crucial to learn how to properly use your Will.

[80]

[80]

CHAPTER IX.
How to Use the Will.

To set about getting rich in a scientific way, you do not try to apply your will power to anything outside of yourself.

To start getting rich in a scientific way, you don't try to force your will on anything outside of yourself.

You have no right to do so, anyway.

You have no right to do that, anyway.

It is wrong to apply your will to other men and women, in order to get them to do what you wish done.

It’s wrong to impose your will on other people to make them do what you want.

It is as flagrantly wrong to coerce people by mental power as it is to coerce them by physical power. If compelling people by physical force to do things for you reduces them to slavery, compelling them by mental means accomplishes exactly the same thing; the only difference is in methods. If taking things from people by physical force is robbery, then taking things by mental[81] force is robbery also; there is no difference in principle.

It is just as completely wrong to force people through mental manipulation as it is to force them through physical violence. If using physical force to make people do things for you turns them into slaves, then using mental tactics achieves the same result; the only difference lies in the methods. If taking things from people through physical force is considered theft, then taking things through mental manipulation is theft too; the underlying principle is the same.

You have no right to use your will power upon another person, even “for his own good”; for you do not know what is for his good.

You don't have the right to impose your will on someone else, even if it’s “for their own good,” because you don’t really know what’s best for them.

The science of getting rich does not require you to apply power or force to any other person, in any way whatsoever. There is not the slightest necessity for doing so; indeed, any attempt to use your will upon others will only tend to defeat your purpose.

The science of getting rich doesn't require you to exert power or force over anyone else, in any way at all. There's absolutely no need to do that; in fact, trying to impose your will on others will only mess up your goals.

You do not need to apply your will to things, in order to compel them to come to you.

You don’t have to force things to come to you.

That would simply be trying to coerce God, and would be foolish and useless, as well as irreverent.

That would just be trying to force God, and it would be foolish, pointless, and disrespectful.

You do not have to compel God to give you good things, any more than you have to use your will power to make the sun rise.

You don’t have to force God to give you good things, just like you don’t have to use your willpower to make the sun rise.

You do not have to use your will power to conquer an unfriendly deity,[82] or to make stubborn and rebellious forces do your bidding.

You don’t need to rely on willpower to defeat an unfriendly deity,[82] or to control stubborn and rebellious forces.

Substance is friendly to you, and is more anxious to give you what you want than you are to get it.

Substance is on your side and is more eager to provide what you want than you are to receive it.

To get rich, you need only to use your will power upon yourself.

To get rich, all you need to do is focus your willpower on yourself.

When you know what to think and do, then you must use your will to compel yourself to think and do the right things. That is the legitimate use of the will in getting what you want—to use it in holding yourself to the right course. Use your will to keep yourself thinking and acting in the Certain Way.

When you know what to think and do, you need to use your will to make yourself think and do the right things. That’s the proper way to use your will to achieve what you want—by sticking to the right path. Use your will to stay focused on thinking and acting in the Certain Way.

Do not try to project your will, or your thoughts, or your mind out into space, to “act” on things or people.

Do not attempt to extend your will, thoughts, or mind out into the universe to influence things or people.

Keep your mind at home; it can accomplish more there than elsewhere.

Keep your mind at home; it can do more there than anywhere else.

Use your mind to form a mental image of what you want, and to hold that vision with faith and purpose; and use your will to keep your mind working in the Right Way.

Use your mind to create a mental picture of what you want, and hold that vision with belief and intention; and use your will to ensure your mind stays focused on the right path.

[83]

[83]

The more steady and continuous your faith and purpose, the more rapidly you will get rich, because you will make only POSITIVE impressions upon Substance; and you will not neutralize or offset them by negative impressions.

The more consistent and focused your faith and purpose are, the faster you'll become wealthy, because you'll create only POSITIVE impressions on Substance; and you won't counteract or negate them with negative impressions.

The picture of your desires, held with faith and purpose, is taken up by the Formless, and permeates it to great distances,—throughout the universe, for all I know.

The image of what you want, held with faith and intention, is picked up by the Formless and spreads out far and wide—throughout the universe, as far as I understand.

As this impression spreads, all things are set moving toward its realization; every living thing, every inanimate thing, and the things yet uncreated, are stirred toward bringing into being that which you want. All force begins to be exerted in that direction; all things begin to move toward you. The minds of people, everywhere, are influenced toward doing the things necessary to the fulfilling of your desires; and they work for you, unconsciously.

As this belief grows, everything gets moving toward making it a reality; every living thing, every non-living thing, and even things that aren’t created yet are all drawn toward bringing to life what you desire. All energy starts to flow in that direction; everything begins to move toward you. People’s minds everywhere are influenced to do the things needed to fulfill your wishes, and they work for you without even realizing it.

But you can check all this by starting a negative impression in the Formless[84] Substance. Doubt or unbelief is as certain to start a movement away from you as faith and purpose are to start one toward you. It is by not understanding this that most people who try to make use of “mental science” in getting rich make their failure. Every hour and moment you spend in giving heed to doubts and fears, every hour you spend in worry, every hour in which your soul is possessed by unbelief, sets a current away from you in the whole domain of intelligent Substance. All the promises are unto them that believe, and unto them only. Notice how insistent Jesus was upon this point of belief; and now you know the reason why.

But you can verify all this by creating a negative impression in the Formless[84] Substance. Doubt or disbelief will definitely create a movement away from you, just as faith and purpose will create one toward you. Most people who try to use “mental science” to get rich fail because they don't understand this. Every hour you spend focusing on doubts and fears, every moment you worry, and every moment your soul is consumed by disbelief creates a current that pulls away from you in the entire realm of intelligent Substance. All the promises are for those who believe, and only for them. Notice how persistent Jesus was about this belief; now you understand why.

Since belief is all important, it behooves you to guard your thoughts; and as your beliefs will be shaped to a very great extent by the things you observe and think about, it is important that you should command your attention.

Since belief is crucial, it's important for you to protect your thoughts; and since your beliefs will be largely influenced by what you observe and think about, it’s vital that you control your attention.

And here the will comes into use; for[85] it is by your will that you determine upon what things your attention shall be fixed.

And this is where your will comes into play; it’s your will that decides what things you'll focus your attention on.

If you want to become rich, you must not make a study of poverty.

If you want to get rich, you shouldn't focus on studying poverty.

Things are not brought into being by thinking about their opposites. Health is never to be attained by studying disease and thinking about disease; righteousness is not to be promoted by studying sin and thinking about sin; and no one ever got rich by studying poverty and thinking about poverty.

Things don't come into existence by focusing on their opposites. You can't achieve health by obsessing over disease; you can't enhance righteousness by dwelling on sin; and no one ever became wealthy by concentrating on poverty.

Medicine as a science of disease has increased disease; religion as a science of sin has promoted sin, and economics as a study of poverty will fill the world with wretchedness and want.

Medicine, as a science of disease, has led to more disease; religion, as a science of sin, has encouraged sin, and economics, as a study of poverty, will fill the world with misery and need.

Do not talk about poverty; do not investigate it, or concern yourself with it. Never mind what its causes are; you have nothing to do with them.

Do not discuss poverty; do not look into it or worry about it. Don’t bother with its causes; they are not your concern.

What concerns you is the cure.

What you're worried about is the cure.

Do not spend your time in charitable work, or charity movements; all charity[86] only tends to perpetuate the wretchedness it aims to eradicate.

Do not waste your time on charitable work or charity movements; all charity[86] just ends up maintaining the misery it tries to eliminate.

I do not say that you should be hard-hearted or unkind, and refuse to hear the cry of need; but you must not try to eradicate poverty in any of the conventional ways. Put poverty behind you, and put all that pertains to it behind you, and “make good.”

I’m not saying you should be cold or unkind and ignore those in need; however, don’t attempt to eliminate poverty through traditional methods. Leave poverty in the past, along with everything that comes with it, and “make it right.”

Get rich; that is the best way you can help the poor.

Get rich; that's the best way you can help the poor.

And you cannot hold the mental image which is to make you rich if you fill your mind with pictures of poverty. Do not read books or papers which give circumstantial accounts of the wretchedness of the tenement dwellers, of the horrors of child labor, and so on. Do not read anything which fills your mind with gloomy images of want and suffering.

And you can’t keep the mental image that will make you wealthy if you fill your mind with thoughts of poverty. Don’t read books or articles that describe the misery of people living in tenements, the horrors of child labor, and so on. Don’t read anything that fills your mind with dark images of need and suffering.

You cannot help the poor in the least by knowing about these things; and the wide-spread knowledge of them does not tend at all to do away with poverty.

You can't really help the poor just by knowing about these issues; and just being aware of them doesn't actually eliminate poverty.

[87]

[87]

What tends to do away with poverty is not the getting of pictures of poverty into your mind, but getting pictures of wealth into the minds of the poor.

What really helps eliminate poverty isn't making the poor constantly think about poverty but rather showing them images of wealth.

You are not deserting the poor in their misery when you refuse to allow your mind to be filled with pictures of that misery.

You’re not abandoning the poor in their suffering when you choose not to let your mind be filled with images of that suffering.

Poverty can be done away with, not by increasing the number of well-to-do people who think about poverty, but by increasing the number of poor people who propose with faith to get rich.

Poverty can be eliminated, not by increasing the number of wealthy individuals who think about poverty, but by increasing the number of poor people who propose with faith to become rich.

The poor do not need charity; they need inspiration. Charity only sends them a loaf of bread to keep them alive in their wretchedness, or gives them an entertainment to make them forget for an hour or two; but inspiration will cause them to rise out of their misery. If you want to help the poor, demonstrate to them that they can become rich; prove it by getting rich yourself.

The poor don't need charity; they need inspiration. Charity just gives them a loaf of bread to survive their misery or offers them some entertainment to distract them for a little while; but inspiration will help them break free from their struggles. If you want to help the poor, show them that they can become wealthy; prove it by becoming wealthy yourself.

The only way in which poverty will ever be banished from this world is by[88] getting a large and constantly increasing number of people to practice the teachings of this book.

The only way to eliminate poverty from this world is by getting a large and growing number of people to follow the teachings of this book.[88]

People must be taught to become rich by creation, not by competition.

People need to learn how to get rich through creation, not competition.

Every man who becomes rich by competition throws down behind him the ladder by which he rises, and keeps others down; but every man who gets rich by creation opens a way for thousands to follow him, and inspires them to do so.

Every man who gets rich through competition leaves behind the ladder he climbed and keeps others from rising; but every man who becomes wealthy through creation paves the way for thousands to follow him and motivates them to do the same.

You are not showing hardness of heart or an unfeeling disposition when you refuse to pity poverty, see poverty, read about poverty, or think or talk about it, or to listen to those who do talk about it. Use your will power to keep your mind OFF the subject of poverty, and to keep it fixed with faith and purpose ON the vision of what you want.

You’re not being heartless or insensitive when you choose not to feel sorry for poverty, acknowledge it, read about it, or think or talk about it, or listen to others who do. Channel your willpower to avoid focusing on poverty, and instead keep your mind on the vision of what you truly want with faith and determination.

[89]

[89]

CHAPTER X.
Further Use of the Will.

You cannot retain a true and clear vision of wealth if you are constantly turning your attention to opposing pictures, whether they be external or imaginary.

You can't maintain a true and clear view of wealth if you're always focusing on opposing images, whether they're real or in your head.

Do not tell of your past troubles of a financial nature, if you have had them; do not think of them at all. Do not tell of the poverty of your parents, or the hardships of your early life; to do any of these things is to mentally class yourself with the poor for the time being, and it will certainly check the movement of things in your direction.

Don’t talk about your past financial troubles, if you’ve had any; just forget about them. Don’t mention your parents’ poverty or the struggles of your early life; doing any of this will mentally align you with the poor for now, and it will definitely hold back your progress.

“Let the dead bury their dead,” as Jesus said.

“Let the dead bury their dead,” as Jesus said.

Put poverty and all things that pertain to poverty completely behind you.

Put poverty and everything related to it completely behind you.

You have accepted a certain theory of[90] the universe as being correct, and are resting all your hopes of happiness on its being correct; and what can you gain by giving heed to conflicting theories?

You have taken on a specific idea about the universe as being true, and you’re pinning all your hopes for happiness on it being true; so what do you gain by paying attention to opposing ideas?

Do not read religious books which tell you that the world is soon coming to an end; and do not read the writings of muck-rakers and pessimistic philosophers who tell you that it is going to the devil.

Do not read religious books that claim the world is about to end; and do not read the works of muckrakers and pessimistic philosophers who say it’s going to hell.

The world is not going to the devil; it is going to God.

The world isn’t headed for disaster; it’s moving towards a higher purpose.

It is a wonderful Becoming.

It is a great Becoming.

True, there may be a good many things in existing conditions which are disagreeable; but what is the use of studying them when they are certainly passing away, and when the study of them only tends to check their passing and keep them with us? Why give time and attention to things which are being removed by evolutionary growth, when you can hasten their removal only by promoting the evolutionary growth as far as your part of it goes?

Sure, there are plenty of things in our current situation that are unpleasant; but what's the point of focusing on them when they're clearly fading away, and when studying them only slows down their departure and keeps them around? Why spend time and energy on things that are disappearing due to progress, when you can accelerate their removal by encouraging that progress as much as you can?

[91]

[91]

No matter how horrible in seeming may be the conditions in certain countries, sections, or places, you waste your time and destroy your own chances by considering them.

No matter how terrible things might look in some countries, areas, or places, you're wasting your time and ruining your own opportunities by dwelling on them.

You should interest yourself in the world’s becoming rich.

You should take an interest in the world's growing wealth.

Think of the riches the world is coming into, instead of the poverty it is growing out of; and bear in mind that the only way in which you can assist the world in growing rich is by growing rich yourself through the creative method—not the competitive one.

Think about the wealth the world is moving toward, instead of the poverty it is leaving behind; and remember that the only way you can help the world become richer is by becoming rich yourself through creative methods—not competitive ones.

Give your attention wholly to riches; ignore poverty.

Focus entirely on wealth; disregard poverty.

Whenever you think or speak of those who are poor, think and speak of them as those who are becoming rich; as those who are to be congratulated rather than pitied. Then they and others will catch the inspiration, and begin to search for the way out.

Whenever you think or talk about those who are poor, think and talk about them as those who are becoming rich; as those who deserve congratulations instead of pity. Then they and others will feel inspired and start looking for a way out.

Because I say that you are to give your whole time and mind and thought[92] to riches, it does not follow that you are to be sordid or mean.

Just because I say you should dedicate all your time, energy, and thoughts to getting wealthy, it doesn't mean you have to be selfish or stingy.[92]

To become really rich is the noblest aim you can have in life, for it includes everything else.

To become truly wealthy is the greatest goal you can have in life, as it encompasses everything else.

On the competitive plane, the struggle to get rich is a Godless scramble for power over other men; but when we come into the creative mind, all this is changed.

On the competitive level, the fight to get rich is a ruthless quest for power over others; but when we enter the creative mindset, everything changes.

All that is possible in the way of greatness and soul unfoldment, of service and lofty endeavor, comes by way of getting rich; all is made possible by the use of things.

All that's possible in terms of greatness and personal growth, service, and high aspirations comes from getting wealthy; everything is made possible through the use of resources.

If you lack for physical health, you will find that the attainment of it is conditional on your getting rich.

If you're not physically healthy, you'll see that achieving it depends on becoming wealthy.

Only those who are emancipated from financial worry, and who have the means to live a care-free existence and follow hygienic practices, can have and retain health.

Only those who are free from financial worries and have the means to live a stress-free life and maintain good hygiene can have and keep their health.

Moral and spiritual greatness is possible only to those who are above the[93] competitive battle for existence; and only those who are becoming rich on the plane of creative thought are free from the degrading influences of competition. If your heart is set on domestic happiness, remember that love flourishes best where there is refinement, a high level of thought, and freedom from corrupting influences; and these are to be found only where riches are attained by the exercise of creative thought, without strife or rivalry.

Moral and spiritual greatness is possible only for those who rise above the[93] competitive struggle for survival; and only those who gain wealth through creative thinking are free from the negative effects of competition. If you desire domestic happiness, keep in mind that love thrives best in an environment of refinement, elevated thinking, and freedom from corrupting influences; these qualities can be found only where wealth is achieved through creative thought, without conflict or rivalry.

You can aim at nothing so great or noble, I repeat, as to become rich; and you must fix your attention upon your mental picture of riches, to the exclusion of all that may tend to dim or obscure the vision.

You can't aim for anything as great or noble, I say again, as becoming wealthy; and you need to focus on your mental image of wealth, ignoring anything that might blur or obscure that vision.

You must learn to see the underlying TRUTH in all things; you must see beneath all seemingly wrong conditions the Great One Life ever moving forward toward fuller expression and more complete happiness.

You need to learn to recognize the underlying TRUTH in everything; you must look beyond all the seemingly negative situations to see the Great One Life continually progressing towards greater expression and deeper happiness.

It is the truth that there is no such[94] thing as poverty; that there is only wealth.

It’s true that there’s no such thing as poverty; there’s only wealth.[94]

Some people remain in poverty because they are ignorant of the fact that there is wealth for them; and these can best be taught by showing them the way to affluence in your own person and practice.

Some people stay in poverty because they don't realize that wealth is accessible to them; and the best way to teach them is by demonstrating how to achieve prosperity through your own actions and lifestyle.

Others are poor because, while they feel that there is a way out, they are too intellectually indolent to put forth the mental effort necessary to find that way and travel it; and for these the very best thing you can do is to arouse their desire by showing them the happiness that comes from being rightly rich.

Others are poor because, even though they believe there's a way out, they're too mentally lazy to put in the effort needed to discover that path and take it; for these people, the best thing you can do is inspire their desire by showing them the joy that comes from being truly wealthy.

Others still are poor because, while they have some notion of science, they have become so swamped and lost in the maze of metaphysical and occult theories that they do not know which road to take. They try a mixture of many systems and fail in all. For these, again, the very best thing to do is to show the right way in your own person[95] and practice; an ounce of doing things is worth a pound of theorizing.

Others are still poor because, even though they have some understanding of science, they've gotten so overwhelmed and confused by the maze of metaphysical and occult theories that they don't know which path to follow. They attempt a mix of various systems and fail at all of them. For these individuals, the best thing to do is to demonstrate the right way through your own actions and practices; a little bit of action is worth a lot of theory.[95]

The very best thing you can do for the whole world is to make the most of yourself.

The best thing you can do for the entire world is to make the most of yourself.

You can serve God and man in no more effective way than by getting rich; that is, if you get rich by the creative method, and not by the competitive one.

You can serve God and people in no better way than by getting wealthy; that is, if you become wealthy through creative means, not through competitive ones.

Another thing. We assert that this book gives in detail the principles of the science of getting rich; and if that is true, you do not need to read any other book upon the subject. This may sound narrow and egotistical, but consider: there is no more scientific method of computation in mathematics than by addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; no other method is possible. There can be but one shortest distance between two points. There is only one way to think scientifically, and that is to think in the way that leads by the most direct and simple route to the[96] goal. No man has yet formulated a briefer or less complex “system” than the one set forth herein; it has been stripped of all non-essentials. When you commence on this, lay all others aside; put them out of your mind altogether.

Another thing. We claim that this book thoroughly explains the principles of the science of getting rich; and if that’s true, you don’t need to read any other book on the subject. This may seem narrow-minded and arrogant, but think about it: there’s no more scientific method in mathematics than addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; no other method is possible. There can only be one shortest distance between two points. There’s only one way to think scientifically, and that’s to think in a way that leads most directly and simply to the[96] goal. No one has yet created a briefer or simpler “system” than the one outlined here; it has been stripped of all unnecessary elements. When you start on this, set all others aside; completely put them out of your mind.

Read this book every day; keep it with you; commit it to memory, and do not think about other “systems” and theories. If you do, you will begin to have doubts, and to be uncertain and wavering in your thought; and then you will begin to make failures.

Read this book every day; keep it with you; memorize it, and don’t think about other “systems” and theories. If you do, you’ll start to have doubts and become uncertain and indecisive in your thoughts; and then you’ll start to fail.

After you have made good and become rich, you may study other systems as much as you please; but until you are quite sure that you have gained what you want, do not read anything on this line but this book, unless it be the authors mentioned in the Preface.

After you've done well and become wealthy, you can study other systems as much as you want; but until you're completely sure that you've achieved what you want, only read this book and nothing else on this topic, unless it’s the authors mentioned in the Preface.

And read only the most optimistic comments on the world’s news; those in harmony with your picture.

And only read the most positive comments about the world's news; the ones that match your perspective.

Also, postpone your investigations[97] into the occult. Do not dabble in Theosophy, Spiritualism, or kindred studies. It is very likely that the dead still live, and are near; but if they are, let them alone; mind your own business.

Also, put your research into the occult on hold[97]. Don’t get involved in Theosophy, Spiritualism, or related studies. It's quite possible that the dead are still around and nearby, but if they are, leave them be; focus on your own life.

Wherever the spirits of the dead may be, they have their own work to do, and their own problems to solve; and we have no right to interfere with them. We cannot help them, and it is very doubtful whether they can help us, or whether we have any right to trespass upon their time if they can. Let the dead and the hereafter alone, and solve your own problem; get rich. If you begin to mix with the occult, you will start mental cross-currents which will surely bring your hopes to shipwreck. Now, this and the preceding chapters have brought us to the following statement of basic facts:—

Wherever the spirits of the dead are, they have their own tasks and challenges to deal with, and we shouldn't meddle in their affairs. We can't assist them, and it’s quite uncertain whether they can assist us, or if we even have the right to interrupt their time if they can. Let the dead and what comes after be, and focus on your own issues; get wealthy. If you start getting involved with the supernatural, you'll create conflicting thoughts that are bound to destroy your ambitions. Now, this and the previous chapters have led us to the following statement of fundamental facts:—

There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.

There is a thinking substance from which everything is made, and which, in its original state, spreads, fills, and occupies the gaps in the universe.

[98]

[98]

A thought, in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.

A thought, in this form, creates the thing that is envisioned by the thought.

Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.

A person can shape things in their mind, and by projecting their thoughts onto formless material, they can bring into existence what they are thinking about.

In order to do this, man must pass from the competitive to the creative mind; he must form a clear mental picture of the things he wants, and hold this picture in his thoughts with the fixed PURPOSE to get what he wants, and the unwavering FAITH that he does get what he wants, closing his mind against all that may tend to shake his purpose, dim his vision, or quench his faith.

To achieve this, a person needs to shift from a competitive mindset to a creative one; they must create a clear mental image of what they desire and keep this image in their thoughts with a determined PURPOSE to attain it, along with an unwavering FAITH that they will get what they want, shutting out anything that might undermine their purpose, cloud their vision, or dampen their faith.

And in addition to all this, we shall now see that he must live and act in a Certain Way.

And besides all that, we'll now see that he has to live and act in a specific way.

[99]

[99]

CHAPTER XI.
Acting a Certain Way.

Thought is the creative power, or the impelling force which causes the creative power to act; thinking in a Certain Way will bring riches to you, but you must not rely upon thought alone, paying no attention to personal action. That is the rock upon which many otherwise scientific metaphysical thinkers meet shipwreck—the failure to connect thought with personal action.

Thought is the creative power, or the driving force that makes the creative power work; thinking in a specific way will bring wealth to you, but you must not depend solely on thought without paying attention to personal action. That is the point where many otherwise rational metaphysical thinkers fail—the inability to link thought with personal action.

We have not yet reached the stage of development, even supposing such a stage to be possible, in which man can create directly from Formless Substance without nature’s processes or the work of human hands; man must not only think, but his personal action must supplement his thought.

We haven’t reached a level of development yet, even if that level might be achievable, where humans can create directly from formless substance without nature’s processes or the effort of human hands; people not only need to think, but their personal actions must also back up their thoughts.

[100]

[100]

By thought you can cause the gold in the hearts of the mountains to be impelled toward you; but it will not mine itself, refine itself, coin itself into double eagles, and come rolling along the roads seeking its way into your pocket.

By thinking, you can draw the gold from the hearts of the mountains towards you; but it won't mine itself, refine itself, or mint itself into double eagles and come rolling along the roads to find its way into your pocket.

Under the impelling power of the Supreme Spirit, men’s affairs will be so ordered that some one will be led to mine the gold for you; other men’s business transactions will be so directed that the gold will be brought toward you, and you must so arrange your own business affairs that you may be able to receive it when it comes to you. Your thought makes all things, animate and inanimate, work to bring you what you want; but your personal activity must be such that you can rightly receive what you want when it reaches you. You are not to take it as charity, nor to steal it; you must give every man more in use value than he gives you in cash value.

Under the guiding influence of the Supreme Spirit, people's lives will be organized so that someone will be led to mine gold for you; others will be directed in their business dealings so that the gold will come your way. You need to manage your own affairs in a way that allows you to accept it when it arrives. Your thoughts cause everything, both living and non-living, to work towards bringing you what you desire; however, your actions must enable you to properly receive what you want when it comes. You shouldn't view it as charity, nor should you take it by force; you should offer every person more in value through their use than what you receive from them in cash.

[101]

[101]

The scientific use of thought consists in forming a clear and distinct mental image of what you want; in holding fast to the purpose to get what you want; and in realizing with grateful faith that you do get what you want.

The scientific use of thought involves creating a clear and vivid mental picture of what you want; staying committed to the goal of achieving it; and recognizing with thankful belief that you will get what you want.

Do not try to “project” your thought in any mysterious or occult way, with the idea of having it go out and do things for you; that is wasted effort, and will weaken your power to think with sanity.

Don't try to "send out" your thoughts in any mysterious or mystical way, thinking they will go out and accomplish things for you; that's a waste of effort and will weaken your ability to think clearly.

The action of thought in getting rich is fully explained in the preceding chapters; your faith and purpose positively impress your vision upon Formless Substance, which has THE SAME DESIRE FOR MORE LIFE THAT YOU HAVE; and this vision, received from you, sets all the creative forces at work IN AND THROUGH THEIR REGULAR CHANNELS OF ACTION, but directed toward you.

The process of thinking your way to wealth is thoroughly discussed in the earlier chapters. Your belief and intention clearly imprint your vision on Formless Substance, which shares your desire for more life. This vision, coming from you, activates all the creative forces in their usual channels of action, but now focused on you.

It is not your part to guide or supervise the creative process; all you have[102] to do with that is to retain your vision, stick to your purpose, and maintain your faith and gratitude.

It’s not your job to direct or oversee the creative process; all you need to do is hold onto your vision, stay focused on your goals, and keep your faith and gratitude intact.[102]

But you must act in a Certain Way, so that you can appropriate what is yours when it comes to you; so that you can meet the things you have in your picture, and put them in their proper places as they arrive.

But you have to act in a specific way, so you can claim what belongs to you when it comes your way; so you can encounter the things you imagine and organize them in their right spots as they come.

You can readily see the truth of this. When things reach you, they will be in the hands of other men, who will ask an equivalent for them.

You can easily see the truth in this. When things come to you, they will be in the hands of other people, who will want something in return for them.

And you can only get what is yours by giving the other man what is his.

And you can only get what belongs to you by giving the other person what belongs to them.

Your pocketbook is not going to be transformed into a Fortunatus’s purse, which shall be always full of money without effort on your part.

Your wallet isn’t going to turn into Fortunatus’s purse, which is always full of money without you having to do anything.

This is the crucial point in the science of getting rich; right here, where thought and personal action must be combined. There are very many people who, consciously or unconsciously, set the creative forces in action by the[103] strength and persistence of their desires, but who remain poor because they do not provide for the reception of the thing they want when it comes.

This is the key moment in the science of getting rich; right here, where thought and personal action must come together. Many people, whether they realize it or not, trigger the creative forces by the strength and persistence of their desires, but they stay poor because they don’t prepare to receive what they want when it arrives.

By thought, the thing you want is brought to you; by action you receive it.

Through thought, what you desire comes to you; through action, you obtain it.

Whatever your action is to be, it is evident that you must act NOW. You cannot act in the past, and it is essential to the clearness of your mental vision that you dismiss the past from your mind. You cannot act in the future, for the future is not here yet. And you cannot tell how you will want to act in any future contingency until that contingency has arrived.

Whatever you plan to do, it’s clear that you must act NOW. You can't do anything about the past, and it's crucial for your mental clarity to let go of it. You also can’t act in the future, because the future hasn’t happened yet. Plus, you won’t know how you’ll want to act in any future situation until that situation actually occurs.

Because you are not in the right business, or the right environment now, do not think that you must postpone action until you get into the right business or environment. And do not spend time in the present taking thought as to the best course in possible future emergencies; have faith in your ability to meet any emergency when it arrives.

Because you're not in the right business or environment right now, don’t think you have to wait to take action until you find the right one. Also, don’t waste time now worrying about the best course of action for possible future emergencies; trust in your ability to handle any situation when it comes.

[104]

[104]

If you act in the present with your mind on the future, your present action will be with a divided mind, and will not be effective.

If you focus on the future while acting in the present, your current actions will be half-hearted and won’t be effective.

Put your whole mind into present action.

Put your entire focus on what you're doing right now.

Do not give your creative impulse to Original Substance, and then sit down and wait for results; if you do, you will never get them. Act now. There is never any time but now, and there never will be any time but now. If you are ever to begin to make ready for the reception of what you want, you must begin now.

Don't hand your creative energy over to Original Substance and then just sit around waiting for results; if you do, you'll never get them. Take action now. The only time is now, and it always will be. If you want to get ready for what you desire, you have to start now.

And your action, whatever it is, must most likely be in your present business or employment, and must be upon the persons and things in your present environment.

And whatever action you take should probably be related to your current job or employment, and should involve the people and things in your immediate surroundings.

You cannot act where you are not; you cannot act where you have been, and you cannot act where you are going to be; you can act only where you are.

You can't take action where you're not; you can't take action where you've been, and you can't take action where you're going to be; you can only take action where you are.

Do not bother as to whether yesterday’s[105] work was well done or ill done; do to-day’s work well.

Don’t worry about whether yesterday’s[105] work was done right or wrong; focus on doing today’s work well.

Do not try to do to-morrow’s work now; there will be plenty of time to do that when you get to it.

Do not try to work on tomorrow's tasks now; there will be plenty of time to get to them later.

Do not try, by occult or mystical means, to act on people or things that are out of your reach.

Do not attempt, through magical or mysterious methods, to influence people or things that are beyond your reach.

Do not wait for a change of environment before you act; get a change of environment by action.

Don’t wait for your surroundings to change before you take action; create a change in your environment through what you do.

You can so act upon the environment in which you are now, as to cause yourself to be transferred to a better environment.

You can take action in your current environment to move yourself to a better one.

Hold with faith and purpose the vision of yourself in the better environment, but act upon your present environment with all your heart, and with all your strength, and with all your mind.

Hold onto the vision of yourself in a better environment with faith and purpose, but fully engage with your current surroundings using all your heart, all your strength, and all your mind.

Do not spend any time in day dreaming or castle building; hold to the one vision of what you want, and act NOW.

Don't waste any time daydreaming or building fantasies; focus on your one clear vision of what you want, and take action NOW.

Do not cast about seeking some new[106] thing to do, or some strange, unusual, or remarkable action to perform as a first step toward getting rich. It is probable that your actions, at least for some time to come, will be those you have been performing for some time past; but you are to begin now to perform these actions in the Certain Way, which will surely make you rich.

Do not look for something new to do, or some odd or extraordinary action to take as your first step toward getting wealthy. It's likely that the actions you take, at least for a while, will be those you've already been doing; but you need to start doing these actions in the Certain Way, which will definitely lead to your wealth.

If you are engaged in some business, and feel that it is not the right one for you, do not wait until you get into the right business before you begin to act.

If you're involved in a business and feel it's not the right fit for you, don't wait to find the right opportunity before you start taking action.

Do not feel discouraged, or sit down and lament because you are misplaced. No man was ever so misplaced but that he could find the right place, and no man ever became so involved in the wrong business but that he could get into the right business.

Don't feel discouraged or give in to despair because you feel out of place. No one is ever so lost that they can't find their way to the right spot, and no one has ever been so caught up in the wrong thing that they can't switch to the right one.

Hold the vision of yourself in the right business, with the purpose to get into it, and the faith that you will get into it, and are getting into it; but ACT in your present business. Use your[107] present business as the means of getting a better one, and use your present environment as the means of getting into a better one. Your vision of the right business, if held with faith and purpose, will cause the Supreme to move the right business toward you; and your action, if performed in the Certain Way, will cause you to move toward the business.

Keep your vision of yourself in the right business, with the goal to get into it, and the confidence that you will join it and are on your way to it; but ACT in your current job. Use your current job as a stepping stone to something better, and use your current situation to help you transition to a better one. Your vision of the right business, if held with belief and intention, will prompt the Universe to bring that right business closer to you; and your actions, when taken in the Right Way, will help you move toward that business.

If you are an employee, or wage earner, and feel that you must change places in order to get what you want, do not “project” your thought into space and rely upon it to get you another job. It will probably fail to do so.

If you're an employee or earning a wage and feel like you need to switch jobs to get what you want, don’t just “send out” your thoughts into the universe and expect them to land you another job. It’s likely not going to work.

Hold the vision of yourself in the job you want, while you ACT with faith and purpose on the job you have, and you will certainly get the job you want.

Hold on to the vision of yourself in the job you desire, while you ACT with confidence and intent in the job you currently have, and you will definitely secure the job you want.

Your vision and faith will set the creative force in motion to bring it toward you, and your action will cause the forces in your own environment to[108] move you toward the place you want. In closing this chapter, we will add another statement to our syllabus:—

Your vision and belief will activate the creative force to attract what you desire, and your actions will make the influences in your surroundings push you toward your goals. To wrap up this chapter, we’ll include another point in our syllabus:—

There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.

There is a thinking substance from which everything is made, and which, in its original state, fills, permeates, and occupies the spaces of the universe.

A thought, in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.

A thought, in this essence, creates the thing that the thought envisions.

Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thoughts upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.

A person can shape ideas in their mind, and by projecting those ideas onto formless matter, they can create whatever they envision.

In order to do this, man must pass from the competitive to the creative mind; he must form a clear mental picture of the things he wants, and hold this picture in his thoughts with the fixed PURPOSE to get what he wants, and the unwavering FAITH that he does get what he wants, closing his mind to all that may tend to shake his purpose, dim his vision, or quench his faith.

To achieve this, a person needs to move from a competitive mindset to a creative one; they must visualize clearly what they want and keep that image in their mind with a strong PURPOSE to obtain it, along with steadfast FAITH that they will achieve it, shutting out anything that could shake their determination, blur their vision, or dampen their faith.

That he may receive what he wants[109] when it comes, man must act NOW upon the people and things in his present environment.

In order to get what he wants[109] when it arrives, a person must take action NOW with the people and things around him.

[110]

[110]

CHAPTER XII.
Smart Action.

You must use your thought as directed in previous chapters, and begin to do what you can do where you are; and you must do ALL that you can do where you are.

You need to use your mind as explained in earlier chapters and start taking action based on what you can do in your current situation; and you have to do everything you can do right where you are.

You can advance only by being larger than your present place; and no man is larger than his present place who leaves undone any of the work pertaining to that place.

You can only move forward by being bigger than where you currently are; and no one is bigger than their current situation if they leave any part of the work related to that situation unfinished.

The world is advanced only by those who more than fill their present places.

The world only moves forward because of those who exceed their current roles.

If no man quite filled his present place, you can see that there must be a going backward in everything. Those who do not quite fill their present places are a dead weight upon society, government, commerce, and industry; they must be carried along by others at a[111] great expense. The progress of the world is retarded only by those who do not fill the places they are holding; they belong to a former age and a lower stage or plane of life, and their tendency is toward degeneration. No society could advance if every man was smaller than his place; social evolution is guided by the law of physical and mental evolution. In the animal world, evolution is caused by excess of life.

If no one truly fulfills their current role, you can see that everything must be regressing. Those who don’t fully occupy their positions become a burden on society, government, commerce, and industry; they need to be supported by others at a[111] significant cost. The world’s progress is hampered only by those who don’t adequately fill the roles they hold; they belong to a bygone era and a lower level of existence, and their tendency is toward decline. No society can move forward if everyone is unfit for their roles; social progress is shaped by the principles of physical and mental development. In the animal kingdom, evolution is driven by an abundance of life.

When an organism has more life than can be expressed in the functions of its own plane, it develops the organs of a higher plane, and a new species is originated.

When an organism has more life than can be expressed in its own functions, it develops the organs of a higher level, leading to the creation of a new species.

There never would have been new species had there not been organisms which more than filled their places. The law is exactly the same for you; your getting rich depends upon your applying this principle to your own affairs.

There would never be new species if there weren't organisms that fully took their places. The same rule applies to you; your ability to get rich relies on you applying this principle to your own situation.

Every day is either a successful day or a day of failure; and it is the successful days which get you what you want.[112] If every day is a failure, you can never get rich; while if every day is a success, you cannot fail to get rich.

Every day is either a successful day or a day of failure, and it's the successful days that help you achieve what you want.[112] If every day is a failure, you'll never get rich; but if every day is a success, you can't help but get rich.

If there is something that may be done to-day, and you do not do it, you have failed in so far as that thing is concerned; and the consequences may be more disastrous than you imagine.

If there's something that can be done today and you don't do it, you've failed regarding that thing; and the consequences might be worse than you think.

You cannot foresee the results of even the most trivial act; you do not know the workings of all the forces that have been set moving in your behalf. Much may be depending on your doing some simple act; it may be the very thing which is to open the door of opportunity to very great possibilities. You can never know all the combinations which Supreme Intelligence is making for you in the world of things and of human affairs; your neglect or failure to do some small thing may cause a long delay in getting what you want.

You can’t predict the outcomes of even the smallest actions; you have no idea about all the forces that are working in your favor. A lot might depend on you taking a simple action; it could be the key that opens up opportunities for incredible possibilities. You can never know all the ways that a higher intelligence is arranging things for you in the world of material and human experiences; ignoring or failing to do something minor might result in a significant delay in achieving what you desire.

Do, every day, ALL that can be done that day.

Do everything you can do each day.

There is, however, a limitation or[113] qualification of the above that you must take into account.

There is, however, a limitation or[113] qualification of the above that you must take into account.

You are not to overwork, nor to rush blindly into your business in the effort to do the greatest possible number of things in the shortest possible time.

You shouldn't overwork yourself or rush headlong into your tasks in an attempt to get as much done as quickly as possible.

You are not to try to do to-morrow’s work to-day, nor to do a week’s work in a day.

You shouldn't try to do tomorrow's work today, nor should you attempt to do a week's worth of work in a single day.

It is really not the number of things you do, but the EFFICIENCY of each separate action that counts.

It’s not about how many things you do, but the effectiveness of each individual action that matters.

Every act is, in itself, either a success or a failure.

Every action is either a success or a failure on its own.

Every act is, in itself, either effective or inefficient.

Every action is either effective or inefficient in itself.

Every inefficient act is a failure, and if you spend your life in doing inefficient acts, your whole life will be a failure.

Every inefficient action is a failure, and if you spend your life doing inefficient things, your entire life will be a failure.

The more things you do, the worse for you, if all your acts are inefficient ones.

The more you do, the worse it is for you, if everything you do is inefficient.

On the other hand, every efficient act is a success in itself, and if every act[114] of your life is an efficient one, your whole life MUST be a success.

On the other hand, every effective action is a success in itself, and if every action in your life is an effective one, your entire life has to be a success.

The cause of failure is doing too many things in an inefficient manner, and not doing enough things in an efficient manner.

The reason for failure is taking on too many tasks ineffectively and not doing enough tasks effectively.

You will see that it is a self-evident proposition that if you do not do any inefficient acts, and if you do a sufficient number of efficient acts, you will become rich. If, now, it is possible for you to make each act an efficient one, you see again that the getting of riches is reduced to an exact science, like mathematics.

You’ll notice that it’s a straightforward idea: if you avoid any inefficient actions and perform enough efficient ones, you will become wealthy. If it’s possible for you to make each action an efficient one, then you can see that acquiring wealth is simplified to a precise science, much like math.

The matter turns, then, on the question whether you can make each separate act a success in itself. And this you can certainly do.

The issue comes down to whether you can make each individual action a success on its own. And you absolutely can.

You can make each act a success, because All Power is working with you; and All Power cannot fail.

You can make every action a success because All Power is with you, and All Power cannot fail.

Power is at your service; and to make each act efficient you have only to put power into it.

Power is here to serve you; to make every action effective, you just need to harness that power.

[115]

[115]

Every action is either strong or weak; and when every one is strong, you are acting in the Certain Way which will make you rich.

Every action is either strong or weak; and when each one is strong, you're acting in a way that will make you successful.

Every act can be made strong and efficient by holding your vision while you are doing it, and putting the whole power of your FAITH and PURPOSE into it.

Every action can be made powerful and effective by keeping your vision in mind while you do it and putting all your FAITH and PURPOSE into it.

It is at this point that the people fail who separate mental power from personal action. They use the power of mind in one place and at one time, and they act in another place and at another time. So their acts are not successful in themselves; too many of them are inefficient. But if All Power goes into every act, no matter how commonplace, every act will be a success in itself; and as in the nature of things every success opens the way to other successes, your progress toward what you want, and the progress of what you want toward you, will become increasingly rapid.

At this point, people stumble when they think of mental power as separate from personal action. They apply their mental energy in one place and at one time, while their actions happen in another place and at another time. As a result, their actions don’t succeed on their own; many of them are ineffective. However, if you put all your energy into every single action, no matter how ordinary, each action will be a success in its own right. Since success naturally leads to more success, your progress toward what you desire and what you want coming toward you will speed up significantly.

[116]

[116]

Remember that successful action is cumulative in its results. Since the desire for more life is inherent in all things, when a man begins to move toward larger life more things attach themselves to him, and the influence of his desire is multiplied.

Remember that successful action builds on itself over time. Since the desire for more life is natural to all beings, when someone starts striving for a bigger life, more opportunities come their way, and the impact of their desire grows.

Do, every day, all that you can do that day, and do each act in an efficient manner.

Do everything you can do each day, and be efficient in everything you do.

In saying that you must hold your vision while you are doing each act, however trivial or commonplace, I do not mean to say that it is necessary at all times to see the vision distinctly to its smallest details. It should be the work of your leisure hours to use your imagination on the details of your vision, and to contemplate them until they are firmly fixed upon your memory.

In saying that you should keep your vision in mind while doing each action, no matter how small or ordinary, I don’t mean that you need to see the vision clearly in all its details at all times. It should be part of your leisure time to use your imagination to refine the details of your vision and to think about them until they’re solidly anchored in your memory.

If you wish speedy results, spend practically all your spare time in this practice.

If you want quick results, spend almost all your free time practicing this.

By continuous contemplation you[117] will get the picture of what you want, even to the smallest details, so firmly fixed upon your mind, and so completely transferred to the mind of Formless Substance, that in your working hours you need only to mentally refer to the picture to stimulate your faith and purpose, and cause your best effort to be put forth. Contemplate your picture in your leisure hours until your consciousness is so full of it that you can grasp it instantly. You will become so enthused with its bright promises that the mere thought of it will call forth the strongest energies of your whole being.

By continuously thinking about it, you[117] will clearly visualize what you want, down to the smallest details, so firmly engraved in your mind, and so completely communicated to the formless substance, that during your working hours you only need to mentally refer back to the image to energize your faith and purpose, and inspire your best efforts. Picture it in your free time until your mind is so full of it that you can quickly access it. You'll feel so excited by its bright promises that just the thought of it will unleash the strongest energies within you.

Let us again repeat our syllabus, and by slightly changing the closing statements bring it to the point we have now reached.

Let’s go over our syllabus again and, by slightly revising the closing statements, bring it to the point we've now reached.

There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.

There is a substance that everything is made of, and in its pure form, it spreads, seeps, and fills the empty spaces of the universe.

A thought, in this substance, produces[118] the thing that is imaged by the thought.

A thought, in this context, creates[118] the thing that the thought pictures.

Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.

A person can shape things in their mind, and by imprinting their thoughts onto formless material, they can bring into existence whatever they are thinking about.

In order to do this, man must pass from the competitive to the creative mind; he must form a clear mental picture of the things he wants, and do, with faith and purpose, all that can be done each day, doing each separate thing in an efficient manner.

To achieve this, a person must shift from a competitive mindset to a creative one; they need to create a clear mental image of what they desire and, with confidence and intention, do everything possible each day, completing each task efficiently.

CHAPTER XIII.
Choosing the Right Business.

Success, in any particular business, depends for one thing upon your possessing in a well-developed state the faculties required in that business.

Success in any specific business largely depends on having well-developed skills essential for that business.

Without good musical faculty no one can succeed as a teacher of music; without well-developed mechanical faculties no one can achieve great success in any of the mechanical trades; without tact and the commercial faculties no one can succeed in mercantile pursuits. But to possess in a well-developed state the faculties required in your particular vocation does not insure getting rich. There are musicians who have remarkable talent, and who yet remain poor; there are blacksmiths, carpenters, and so on who have excellent mechanical[120] ability, but who do not get rich; and there are merchants with good faculties for dealing with men who nevertheless fail.

Without strong musical skills, no one can succeed as a music teacher; without well-developed mechanical skills, no one can achieve great success in any mechanical trades; and without social skills and business sense, no one can thrive in commercial activities. However, just having the skills needed for your specific job doesn't guarantee wealth. There are musicians with amazing talent who still struggle financially; there are blacksmiths, carpenters, and others with excellent mechanical skills who do not become wealthy; and there are merchants with good people skills who still face failure.

The different faculties are tools; it is essential to have good tools, but it is also essential that the tools should be used in the Right Way. One man can take a sharp saw, a square, a good plane, and so on, and build a handsome article of furniture; another man can take the same tools and set to work to duplicate the article, but his production will be a botch. He does not know how to use good tools in a successful way.

The different abilities are like tools; it's important to have good tools, but it’s also crucial to use them correctly. One person can take a sharp saw, a square, a good plane, and so on, and create a beautiful piece of furniture; another person can use the same tools and try to make a copy, but what they produce will be a mess. They don’t know how to use good tools effectively.

The various faculties of your mind are the tools with which you must do the work which is to make you rich; it will be easier for you to succeed if you get into a business for which you are well equipped with mental tools.

The different abilities of your mind are the tools you need to do the work that will make you successful; it will be easier for you to thrive if you choose a business that aligns with your strengths and skills.

Generally speaking, you will do best in that business which will use your strongest faculties; the one for which you are naturally “best fitted.” But[121] there are limitations to this statement, also. No man should regard his vocation as being irrevocably fixed by the tendencies with which he was born.

Generally speaking, you'll do best in a business that utilizes your strongest skills; the one for which you are naturally "best suited." But[121] there are limitations to this idea as well. No one should view their career as permanently determined by the tendencies they were born with.

You can get rich in ANY business, for if you have not the right talent for it you can develop that talent; it merely means that you will have to make your tools as you go along, instead of confining yourself to the use of those with which you were born. It will be EASIER for you to succeed in a vocation for which you already have the talents in a well-developed state; but you CAN succeed in any vocation, for you can develop any rudimentary talent, and there is no talent of which you have not at least the rudiment.

You can get rich in ANY business because if you don’t have the right talent for it, you can develop that talent. It just means you'll have to create your tools along the way instead of relying only on what you were born with. It will be EASIER for you to succeed in a field where you already have well-developed talents, but you CAN succeed in any field since you can cultivate any basic talent, and there’s no talent that you don’t have at least the basics of.

You will get rich most easily in point of effort, if you do that for which you are best fitted; but you will get rich most satisfactorily if you do that which you WANT to do.

You’ll become rich most easily with the least effort if you do what you're best suited for; but you'll find the journey to wealth most satisfying if you pursue what you truly WANT to do.

Doing what you want to do is life; and there is no real satisfaction in living[122] if we are compelled to be forever doing something which we do not like to do, and can never do what we want to do. And it is certain that you can do what you want to do; the desire to do it is proof that you have within you the power which can do it.

Doing what you want to do is life; and there’s no real satisfaction in living[122] if we’re always forced to do things we don’t like and can never do what we really want. It’s clear that you can do what you want to do; the desire to do it is proof that you have the power to make it happen.

Desire is a manifestation of power.

Desire is a display of strength.

The desire to play music is the power which can play music seeking expression and development; the desire to invent mechanical devices is the mechanical talent seeking expression and development.

The desire to make music is the force that drives musical expression and growth; the desire to create machines is the technical skill striving for expression and advancement.

Where there is no power, either developed or undeveloped, to do a thing, there is never any desire to do that thing; and where there is strong desire to do a thing, it is certain proof that the power to do it is strong, and only requires to be developed and applied in the Right Way.

Where there is no ability, either present or absent, to do something, there is never any desire to do that thing; and where there is a strong desire to do something, it’s clear evidence that the ability to do it is strong and just needs to be harnessed and used the right way.

All things else being equal, it is best to select the business for which you have the best developed talent; but if you[123] have a strong desire to engage in any particular line of work, you should select that work as the ultimate end at which you aim.

All other factors being the same, it's best to choose the business where your skills are most developed; however, if you have a strong desire to work in a specific field, you should pursue that as your ultimate goal.

You can do what you want to do, and it is your right and privilege to follow the business or avocation which will be most congenial and pleasant.

You can pursue what you want to pursue, and it's your right and privilege to follow the career or hobby that feels most comfortable and enjoyable to you.

You are not obliged to do what you do not like to do, and should not do it except as a means to bring you to the doing of the thing you want to do.

You aren’t required to do what you don’t enjoy, and you should only do it if it helps you get to the things you actually want to do.

If there are past mistakes whose consequences have placed you in an undesirable business or environment, you may be obliged for some time to do what you do not like to do; but you can make the doing of it pleasant by knowing that it is making it possible for you to come to the doing of what you want to do.

If you've made mistakes in the past that have led you to a job or situation you don't like, you might have to do things you don’t enjoy for a while. But you can make it easier by remembering that this is helping you get to the point where you can do what you really want to do.

If you feel that you are not in the right vocation, do not act too hastily in trying to get into another one. The best way, generally, to change business or environment is by growth.

If you feel like you’re not in the right career, don’t rush into switching to another one. Usually, the best way to change your job or surroundings is through personal growth.

[124]

[124]

Do not be afraid to make a sudden and radical change if the opportunity is presented, and you feel after careful consideration that it is the right opportunity; but never take sudden or radical action when you are in doubt as to the wisdom of doing so.

Don't be afraid to make a sudden and drastic change if the chance comes up and you feel, after careful thought, that it's the right move; but never take quick or radical action when you're unsure about whether it's the right thing to do.

There is never any hurry on the creative plane; and there is no lack of opportunity.

There’s never a rush in the creative realm, and there’s no shortage of opportunities.

When you get out of the competitive mind you will understand that you never need to act hastily. No one else is going to beat you to the thing you want to do; there is enough for all. If one place is taken, another and a better one will be opened for you a little farther on; there is plenty of time. When you are in doubt, wait. Fall back on the contemplation of your vision, and increase your faith and purpose; and by all means, in times of doubt and indecision, cultivate gratitude.

When you stop thinking competitively, you'll realize that there's no need to rush. No one else is going to take away what you want to do; there's enough for everyone. If one opportunity is gone, another, possibly even better one, will come up a bit later on; there's plenty of time. When you're uncertain, just wait. Reflect on your vision and strengthen your faith and determination; and definitely, during moments of doubt and indecision, practice gratitude.

A day or two spent in contemplating the vision of what you want, and in[125] earnest thanksgiving that you are getting it, will bring your mind into such close relationship with the Supreme that you will make no mistake when you do act.

A day or two spent reflecting on your vision of what you want, along with genuine gratitude for what you're receiving, will connect your mind so closely with the Supreme that you won’t make any mistakes when you take action.

There is a mind which knows all there is to know; and you can come into close unity with this mind by faith and the purpose to advance in life, if you have deep gratitude.

There is a mind that knows everything there is to know; and you can connect closely with this mind through faith and a desire to move forward in life, if you have sincere gratitude.

Mistakes come from acting hastily, or from acting in fear or doubt, or in forgetfulness of the Right Motive, which is more life to all, and less to none.

Mistakes happen when we act quickly, out of fear or uncertainty, or when we forget the Right Motive, which brings more life to everyone and less to no one.

As you go on in the Certain Way, opportunities will come to you in increasing number; and you will need to be very steady in your faith and purpose, and to keep in close touch with the All Mind by reverent gratitude.

As you progress on the Certain Way, opportunities will come your way in greater numbers; and you'll need to stay strong in your faith and goals, while maintaining a close connection with the All Mind through sincere gratitude.

Do all that you can do in a perfect manner every day, but do it without haste, worry, or fear. Go as fast as you can, but never hurry.

Do everything you can in a perfect way every day, but do it without rushing, worrying, or being afraid. Move as quickly as you can, but never rush.

[126]

[126]

Remember that in the moment you begin to hurry you cease to be a creator and become a competitor; you drop back upon the old plane again.

Remember that the moment you start to rush, you stop being a creator and turn into a competitor; you fall back into the old mindset.

Whenever you find yourself hurrying, call a halt; fix your attention on the mental image of the thing you want, and begin to give thanks that you are getting it. The exercise of GRATITUDE will never fail to strengthen your faith and renew your purpose.

Whenever you find yourself rushing, stop; focus your mind on the image of what you want, and start being thankful that you are getting it. Practicing GRATITUDE will always boost your faith and refresh your purpose.

[127]

[127]

CHAPTER XIV.
The Impression of Growth.

Whether you change your vocation or not, your actions for the present must be those pertaining to the business in which you are now engaged.

Whether you switch careers or not, what you do right now has to relate to the work you're currently involved in.

You can get into the business you want by making constructive use of the business you are already established in; by doing your daily work in a Certain Way.

You can enter the field you desire by effectively leveraging the business you’re already involved in; by approaching your daily tasks in a specific way.

And in so far as your business consists in dealing with other men, whether personally or by letter, the key-thought of all your efforts must be to convey to their minds the impression of increase.

And as long as your business involves interacting with other people, whether in person or through letters, the main idea behind all your efforts should be to create the impression of growth in their minds.

Increase is what all men and all women are seeking; it is the urge of the Formless Intelligence within them, seeking fuller expression.

Increase is what everyone is after; it's the drive of the Formless Intelligence inside them, looking for a fuller expression.

[128]

[128]

The desire for increase is inherent in all nature; it is the fundamental impulse of the universe. All human activities are based on the desire for increase; people are seeking more food, more clothes, better shelter, more luxury, more beauty, more knowledge, more pleasure—increase in something, more life.

The desire for growth is natural to all of existence; it’s the core motivation of the universe. Every human action stems from the desire for more—people are looking for more food, more clothing, better homes, more luxury, more beauty, more knowledge, more pleasure—an increase in something, more life.

Every living thing is under this necessity for continuous advancement; where increase of life ceases, dissolution and death set in at once.

Every living thing needs to keep moving forward; when growth stops, decay and death start immediately.

Man instinctively knows this, and hence he is forever seeking more. This law of perpetual increase is set forth by Jesus in the parable of the talents; only those who gain more retain any; from him who hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

People naturally understand this, so they’re always looking for more. This principle of constant growth is illustrated by Jesus in the parable of the talents; only those who gain more keep anything; from the one who has nothing, even what they do have will be taken away.

The normal desire for increased wealth is not an evil or a reprehensible thing; it is simply the desire for more abundant life; it is aspiration.

The usual desire for more wealth isn’t bad or shameful; it’s just the longing for a richer life; it’s ambition.

And because it is the deepest instinct[129] of their natures, all men and women are attracted to him who can give them more of the means of life.

And because it's the most basic instinct[129] of their nature, all men and women are drawn to those who can provide them with better resources for living.

In following the Certain Way as described in the foregoing pages, you are getting continuous increase for yourself, and you are giving it to all with whom you deal.

By following the Certain Way outlined in the previous pages, you are continuously enhancing yourself and sharing this growth with everyone you interact with.

You are a creative center, from which increase is given off to all.

You are a creative hub, radiating growth to everyone.

Be sure of this, and convey assurance of the fact to every man, woman, and child with whom you come in contact. No matter how small the transaction, even if it be only the selling of a stick of candy to a little child, put into it the thought of increase, and make sure that the customer is impressed with the thought.

Make sure of this and communicate it confidently to every man, woman, and child you meet. No matter how small the transaction, even if it’s just selling a stick of candy to a little kid, infuse it with the idea of growth, and ensure that the customer feels that idea.

Convey the impression of advancement with everything you do, so that all people shall receive the impression that you are an Advancing Man, and that you advance all who deal with you. Even to the people whom you meet in[130] a social way, without any thought of business, and to whom you do not try to sell anything, give the thought of increase.

Convey the impression of progress in everything you do, so that everyone will see you as a Progressive Person who helps others to grow. Even with the people you meet socially, without any business intent, and to whom you don’t try to sell anything, give off the vibe of growth.

You can convey this impression by holding the unshakable faith that you, yourself, are in the Way of Increase; and by letting this faith inspire, fill, and permeate every action.

You can create this impression by having an unwavering belief that you are on the path to growth; and by allowing this belief to inspire, motivate, and influence everything you do.

Do everything that you do in the firm conviction that you are an advancing personality, and that you are giving advancement to everybody.

Do everything with the strong belief that you are a growing individual, and that you are helping everyone grow too.

Feel that you are getting rich, and that in so doing you are making others rich, and conferring benefits on all.

Believe that you are becoming wealthy, and by doing so, you are also making others wealthy and bringing benefits to everyone.

Do not boast or brag of your success, or talk about it unnecessarily; true faith is never boastful.

Don't brag about your success or talk about it too much; true faith is never boastful.

Wherever you find a boastful person, you find one who is secretly doubtful and afraid. Simply feel the faith, and let it work out in every transaction; let every act and tone and look express the quiet assurance that you are getting[131] rich; that you are already rich. Words will not be necessary to communicate this feeling to others; they will feel the sense of increase when in your presence, and will be attracted to you again.

Wherever you see someone bragging, you find someone who is secretly unsure and scared. Just trust in the process, and let it unfold in everything you do. Let every action, tone, and glance express the calm confidence that you're becoming wealthy; that you’re already wealthy. You won’t need words to share this feeling with others; they will sense your growth when they’re around you and will be drawn to you again.

You must so impress others that they will feel that in associating with you they will get increase for themselves. See that you give them a use value greater than the cash value you are taking from them.

You need to impress others so much that they believe being around you will benefit them. Make sure you provide them with more value than the money you’re taking from them.

Take an honest pride in doing this, and let everybody know it; and you will have no lack of customers. People will go where they are given increase; and the Supreme, which desires increase in all, and which knows all, will move toward you men and women who have never heard of you. Your business will increase rapidly, and you will be surprised at the unexpected benefits which will come to you. You will be able from day to day to make larger combinations, secure greater advantages, and to go on[132] into a more congenial vocation if you desire to do so.

Take genuine pride in what you’re doing and let everyone know about it; you won’t have any shortage of customers. People will go where they see growth, and the Supreme, which wants growth for all and knows everything, will draw in men and women who have never heard of you. Your business will grow quickly, and you’ll be amazed at the unexpected rewards that come your way. Day by day, you’ll be able to form bigger partnerships, gain greater advantages, and move into a more enjoyable line of work if that’s what you want to do.

But in doing all this, you must never lose sight of your vision of what you want, or your faith and purpose to get what you want.

But in doing all this, you must never lose sight of your vision of what you want, or your faith and purpose to get what you want.

Let me here give you another word of caution in regard to motives.

Let me offer you another piece of advice about motivations.

Beware of the insidious temptation to seek for power over other men.

Be cautious of the sneaky urge to try to control other people.

Nothing is so pleasant to the unformed or partially developed mind as the exercise of power or dominion over others. The desire to rule for selfish gratification has been the curse of the world. For countless ages kings and lords have drenched the earth with blood in their battles to extend their dominions; this not to seek more life for all, but to get more power for themselves.

Nothing is more enjoyable to an immature or partially developed mind than having power over others. The need to control for personal satisfaction has been a plague on the world. For countless ages, kings and lords have soaked the earth in blood in their fights to expand their territories; this was not to create a better life for everyone, but to gain more power for themselves.

To-day, the main motive in the business and industrial world is the same; men marshal their armies of dollars, and lay waste the lives and hearts of[133] millions in the same mad scramble for power over others. Commercial kings, like political kings, are inspired by the lust for power.

Today, the main motivation in the business and industrial world is the same; people gather their armies of dollars and ruin the lives and hearts of millions in the same insane pursuit of power over others. Business moguls, just like political leaders, are driven by a desire for power.

Jesus saw in this desire for mastery the moving impulse of that evil world He sought to overthrow. Read the twenty-third chapter of Matthew, and see how He pictures the lust of the Pharisees to be called “Master,” to sit in the high places, to domineer over others, and to lay burdens on the backs of the less fortunate; and note how He compares this lust for dominion with the brotherly seeking for the Common Good to which He calls His disciples.

Jesus recognized this desire for control as the driving force behind the corrupt world He aimed to change. Check out the twenty-third chapter of Matthew to see how He describes the Pharisees’ craving to be called "Master," to occupy prominent positions, to exert power over others, and to impose heavy burdens on the less fortunate. Pay attention to how He contrasts this desire for domination with the brotherly pursuit of the Common Good that He encourages His disciples to embrace.

Look out for the temptation to seek for authority, to become a “master,” to be considered as one who is above the common herd, to impress others by lavish display, and so on.

Watch out for the urge to seek authority, to become a "master," to be seen as someone above the ordinary crowd, to impress others with extravagant showiness, and so on.

The mind that seeks for mastery over others is the competitive mind; and the competitive mind is not the creative one. In order to master your environment[134] and your destiny, it is not at all necessary that you should rule over your fellow men; and indeed, when you fall into the world’s struggle for the high places, you begin to be conquered by fate and environment, and your getting rich becomes a matter of chance and speculation.

The mind that desires to control others is a competitive mind, and the competitive mind isn't the creative one. To take charge of your surroundings and your future, you don’t need to dominate others; in fact, when you get caught up in the struggle for power, you start to be controlled by fate and your environment, and your path to wealth becomes a game of chance and speculation.

Beware of the competitive mind! No better statement of the principle of creative action can be formulated than the favorite declaration of the late “Golden Rule” Jones of Toledo: “What I want for myself, I want for everybody.”

Beware of the competitive mindset! There's no better way to express the principle of creative action than the favorite saying of the late “Golden Rule” Jones from Toledo: “What I want for myself, I want for everyone.”

[135]

[135]

CHAPTER XV.
The Progressing Man.

What I have said in the last chapter applies as well to the professional man and the wage-earner as to the man who is engaged in mercantile business.

What I’ve mentioned in the last chapter also applies to professionals and wage-earners just as it does to those involved in business.

No matter whether you are a physician, a teacher, or a clergyman, if you can give increase of life to others and make them sensible of the fact, they will be attracted to you, and you will get rich. The physician who holds the vision of himself as a great and successful healer, and who works toward the complete realization of that vision with faith and purpose, as described in former chapters, will come into such close touch with the Source of Life that he will be phenomenally successful; patients will come to him in throngs.

No matter if you're a doctor, a teacher, or a clergy member, if you can improve the lives of others and help them recognize it, they'll be drawn to you, and you'll become wealthy. The doctor who envisions themselves as a successful and great healer, and who works toward fully achieving that vision with belief and determination, as discussed in previous chapters, will connect so deeply with the Source of Life that they will achieve remarkable success; patients will seek them out in droves.

[136]

[136]

No one has a greater opportunity to carry into effect the teachings of this book than the practitioner of medicine; it does not matter to which of the various schools he may belong, for the principle of healing is common to all of them, and may be reached by all alike. The Advancing Man in medicine, who holds to a clear mental image of himself as successful, and who obeys the laws of faith, purpose, and gratitude, will cure every curable case he undertakes, no matter what remedies he may use.

No one has a better chance to put the teachings of this book into practice than medical professionals; it doesn’t matter which school they belong to, because the principle of healing is shared by all of them and can be accessed by everyone. The progressive medical practitioner, who maintains a clear vision of themselves as successful and follows the principles of faith, purpose, and gratitude, will successfully treat every case that can be cured, regardless of the remedies they use.

In the field of religion, the world cries out for the clergyman who can teach his hearers the true science of abundant life. He who masters the details of the science of getting rich, together with the allied sciences of being well, of being great, and of winning love, and who teaches these details from the pulpit, will never lack for a congregation. This is the gospel that the world needs; it will give increase of[137] life, and men will hear it gladly, and will give liberal support to the man who brings it to them.

In the realm of religion, the world is in desperate need of a clergyman who can teach people the true principles of living a fulfilling life. The one who understands the intricacies of the science of wealth, along with the related disciplines of health, greatness, and love, and shares this knowledge from the pulpit, will always have a full congregation. This is the message the world craves; it will enhance life, and people will welcome it eagerly and generously support the person who shares it with them.

What is now needed is a demonstration of the science of life from the pulpit. We want preachers who can not only tell us how, but who in their own persons will show us how. We need the preacher who will himself be rich, healthy, great, and beloved, to teach us how to attain to these things; and when he comes he will find a numerous and loyal following.

What we need now is a demonstration of the science of life from the pulpit. We want preachers who can not only explain how but also show us through their own lives. We need the preacher who is wealthy, healthy, influential, and loved to teach us how to achieve these things; and when he arrives, he will find a large and loyal following.

The same is true of the teacher who can inspire the children with the faith and purpose of the advancing life. He will never be “out of a job.” And any teacher who has this faith and purpose can give it to his pupils; he cannot help giving it to them if it is part of his own life and practice.

The same is true for the teacher who can inspire children with the belief and goals of a growing life. They will never be "out of a job." Any teacher who possesses this belief and purpose will naturally pass it on to their students; they can't help but share it if it is a part of their own life and practice.

What is true of the teacher, preacher, and physician is true of the lawyer, dentist, real estate man, insurance agent—of everybody.

What applies to the teacher, preacher, and doctor also applies to the lawyer, dentist, realtor, insurance agent—everyone.

[138]

[138]

The combined mental and personal action I have described is infallible; it cannot fail. Every man and woman who follows these instructions steadily, perseveringly, and to the letter, will get rich. The law of the Increase of Life is as mathematically certain in its operation as the law of gravitation; getting rich is an exact science.

The combined mental and personal actions I’ve described are foolproof; they can’t fail. Anyone who follows these instructions consistently, diligently, and precisely will become wealthy. The principle of Life’s Increase operates with the same mathematical certainty as the law of gravity; getting rich is a precise science.

The wage-earner will find this as true of his case as of any of the others mentioned. Do not feel that you have no chance to get rich because you are working where there is no visible opportunity for advancement, where wages are small and the cost of living high. Form your clear mental vision of what you want, and begin to act with faith and purpose.

The worker will find this to be true for their situation just like for anyone else's mentioned. Don’t think you have no chance to get rich just because you’re in a job that doesn’t show any clear opportunity for advancement, where pay is low and the cost of living is high. Clearly visualize what you want and start taking action with confidence and intention.

Do all the work you can do, every day, and do each piece of work in a perfectly successful manner; put the power of success, and the purpose to get rich, into everything that you do.

Do as much work as you can every day, and do each task really well; put the drive for success and the goal of getting rich into everything you do.

But do not do this merely with the[139] idea of currying favor with your employer, in the hope that he, or those above you, will see your good work and advance you; it is not likely that they will do so.

But don't do this just to win over your boss, hoping that he or those higher up will notice your hard work and promote you; it's unlikely they will.

The man who is merely a “good” workman, filling his place to the very best of his ability, and satisfied with that, is valuable to his employer; and it is not to the employer’s interest to promote him; he is worth more where he is.

The man who is just a “good” worker, doing his job to the best of his ability and content with that, is valuable to his employer; and it’s not in the employer’s interest to promote him; he’s worth more in his current position.

To secure advancement, something more is necessary than to be too large for your place.

To move up, you need more than just being too big for your spot.

The man who is certain to advance is the one who is too big for his place, and who has a clear concept of what he wants to be; who knows that he can become what he wants to be, and who is determined to BE what he wants to be.

The man who is sure to move ahead is the one who's too ambitious for his current situation and has a clear idea of who he wants to become; he understands that he can achieve his goals and is committed to becoming who he wants to be.

Do not try to more than fill your present place with a view to pleasing your employer; do it with the idea of advancing[140] yourself. Hold the faith and purpose of increase during work hours, after work hours, and before work hours. Hold it in such a way that every person who comes in contact with you, whether foreman, fellow workman, or social acquaintance, will feel the power of purpose radiating from you; so that every one will get the sense of advancement and increase from you. Men will be attracted to you, and if there is no possibility for advancement in your present job, you will very soon see an opportunity to take another job.

Don’t just focus on impressing your boss; aim to improve yourself instead. Maintain a mindset of growth and progress during work hours, after work, and before work. Exude this attitude in such a way that everyone you encounter, whether it’s your manager, coworkers, or friends, can feel your determination. Make sure that everyone senses your drive for success and advancement. People will be drawn to you, and if there aren’t any chances for progress in your current job, you’ll quickly notice opportunities to move on to a new position.

There is a Power which never fails to present opportunity to the Advancing Man who is moving in obedience to law.

There is a power that always provides opportunities to the person who is progressing while following the law.

God cannot help helping you, if you act in a Certain Way; He must do so in order to help Himself.

God can't help but help you if you act in a certain way; He has to do so in order to help Himself.

There is nothing in your circumstances or in the industrial situation that can keep you down. If you cannot get rich working for the steel trust, you can get rich on a ten-acre farm; and if[141] you begin to move in the Certain Way, you will certainly escape from the “clutches” of the steel trust and get on to the farm or wherever else you wish to be.

There’s nothing in your situation or in the job market that can hold you back. If you can’t get wealthy working for the steel company, you can still become rich on a ten-acre farm; and if you start to move in the right direction, you will definitely break free from the grasp of the steel company and get to the farm or wherever else you want to go.

If a few thousands of its employees would enter upon the Certain Way, the steel trust would soon be in a bad plight; it would have to give its workingmen more opportunity, or go out of business. Nobody has to work for a trust; the trusts can keep men in so-called hopeless conditions only so long as there are men who are too ignorant to know of the science of getting rich, or too intellectually slothful to practice it.

If a few thousand of its employees chose to follow the Certain Way, the steel trust would soon find itself in trouble; it would have to provide its workers with better opportunities or shut down. Nobody has to work for a trust; trusts can keep people in so-called hopeless situations only as long as there are individuals who are too unaware of the principles of getting rich or too lazy to apply them.

Begin this way of thinking and acting, and your faith and purpose will make you quick to see any opportunity to better your condition.

Start thinking and acting this way, and your faith and purpose will help you quickly recognize any chance to improve your situation.

Such opportunities will speedily come, for the Supreme, working in All, and working for you, will bring them before you.

Such opportunities will quickly come, because the Supreme, working through everyone and for you, will present them to you.

[142]

[142]

Do not wait for an opportunity to be all that you want to be; when an opportunity to be more than you are now is presented and you feel impelled toward it, take it. It will be the first step toward a greater opportunity.

Don't wait for a chance to become everything you want to be; when an opportunity to be more than you are now comes your way and you feel drawn to it, go for it. It will be the first step toward a bigger opportunity.

There is no such thing possible in this universe as a lack of opportunities for the man who is living the advancing life.

There’s no such thing as a lack of opportunities in this universe for someone who is living a progressive life.

It is inherent in the constitution of the cosmos that all things shall be for him and work together for his good; and he must certainly get rich if he acts and thinks in the Certain Way. So let wage-earning men and women study this book with great care, and enter with confidence upon the course of action it prescribes; it will not fail.

It’s built into the nature of the universe that everything exists for him and works together for his benefit; and he will definitely become wealthy if he acts and thinks in the right way. So, let working men and women study this book closely and confidently follow the course of action it suggests; it will not let them down.

CHAPTER XVI.
Some Warnings and Final Thoughts.

Many people will scoff at the idea that there is an exact science of getting rich; holding the impression that the supply of wealth is limited, they will insist that social and governmental institutions must be changed before even any considerable number of people can acquire a competence.

Many people will laugh at the idea that there's a specific science to getting rich; believing that the amount of wealth is limited, they insist that social and governmental systems need to be changed before a significant number of people can achieve financial stability.

But this is not true.

But that's not true.

It is true that existing governments keep the masses in poverty, but this is because the masses do not think and act in the Certain Way.

It is true that current governments keep the masses in poverty, but this is because the masses do not think and act in the right way.

If the masses begin to move forward as suggested in this book, neither governments nor industrial systems can check them; all systems must be modified[144] to accommodate the forward movement.

If the people start to push ahead, as this book suggests, neither governments nor industrial systems can stop them; all systems will need to be changed to adapt to this progress.[144]

If the people have the Advancing Mind, have the Faith that they can become rich, and move forward with the fixed purpose to become rich, nothing can possibly keep them in poverty.

If people have a growth mindset, believe they can get rich, and pursue their goal of becoming wealthy with determination, nothing can hold them back from achieving prosperity.

Individuals may enter upon the Certain Way at any time, and under any government, and make themselves rich; and when any considerable number of individuals do so under any government, they will cause the system to be so modified as to open the way for others.

Individuals can start on the Certain Way at any time and under any government and build their wealth; and when a significant number of individuals do this under any government, they will change the system enough to create opportunities for others.

The more men who get rich on the competitive plane, the worse for others; the more who get rich on the creative plane, the better for others.

The more men get rich through competition, the worse it is for everyone else; the more who get rich through creativity, the better it is for everyone else.

The economic salvation of the masses can only be accomplished by getting a large number of people to practice the scientific method set down in this book, and become rich. These will show others the way, and inspire them with[145] a desire for real life, with the faith that it can be attained, and with the purpose to attain it.

The economic salvation of the masses can only be achieved by getting a lot of people to follow the scientific method outlined in this book and become wealthy. These individuals will guide others and inspire them with a desire for a genuine life, the belief that it’s possible, and the determination to make it happen.

For the present, however, it is enough to know that neither the government under which you live nor the capitalistic or competitive system of industry can keep you from getting rich. When you enter upon the creative plane of thought you will rise above all these things and become a citizen of another kingdom.

For now, it’s enough to know that neither the government you live under nor the capitalist or competitive system of industry can stop you from getting rich. When you tap into creative thinking, you’ll rise above all these things and become part of a different realm.

But remember that your thought must be held upon the creative plane; you are never for an instant to be betrayed into regarding the supply as limited, or into acting on the moral level of competition.

But remember that your thoughts should stay focused on the creative level; you should never for a moment be misled into thinking that the supply is limited, or into behaving as if you are in competition with others.

Whenever you do fall into old ways of thought, correct yourself instantly; for when you are in the competitive mind, you have lost the co-operation of the Mind of the Whole.

Whenever you find yourself slipping back into old ways of thinking, correct yourself right away; because when you're in a competitive mindset, you've lost the support of the Collective Mind.

Do not spend any time in planning as to how you will meet possible emergencies in the future, except as the[146] necessary policies may affect your actions to-day. You are concerned with doing to-day’s work in a perfectly successful manner, and not with emergencies which may arise to-morrow; you can attend to them as they come.

Don’t waste time planning how to deal with potential emergencies in the future, except for how current policies might influence your actions today. Focus on doing today’s work successfully, not on emergencies that might come up tomorrow; you can handle them when they arise.

Do not concern yourself with questions as to how you shall surmount obstacles which may loom upon your business horizon, unless you can see plainly that your course must be altered to-day in order to avoid them.

Do not worry about questions regarding how you will overcome obstacles that might appear on your business horizon, unless you can clearly see that you need to change your course today to avoid them.

No matter how tremendous an obstruction may appear at a distance, you will find that if you go on in the Certain Way it will disappear as you approach it, or that a way over, through, or around it will appear.

No matter how big an obstacle looks from far away, you'll see that if you keep moving forward in the Right Direction, it will vanish as you get closer, or a path over, through, or around it will show up.

No possible combination of circumstances can defeat a man or woman who is proceeding to get rich along strictly scientific lines. No man or woman who obeys the law can fail to get rich, any more than one can multiply two by two and fail to get four.

No combination of circumstances can stop a person from getting rich if they're following a strict scientific approach. Anyone who follows the law will inevitably get rich, just like multiplying two by two will always give you four.

[147]

[147]

Give no anxious thought to possible disasters, obstacles, panics, or unfavorable combinations of circumstances; it is time enough to meet such things when they present themselves before you in the immediate present, and you will find that every difficulty carries with it the wherewithal for its overcoming.

Don't worry about possible disasters, obstacles, panic, or bad situations. You can deal with those things when they actually happen, and you'll see that every challenge comes with the means to overcome it.

Guard your speech. Never speak of yourself, your affairs, or of anything else in a discouraged or discouraging way.

Guard your words. Never talk about yourself, your situation, or anything else in a negative or discouraging manner.

Never admit the possibility of failure, or speak in a way that infers failure as a possibility.

Never acknowledge that failure is an option, or talk in a way that suggests failure could happen.

Never speak of the times as being hard, or of business conditions as being doubtful. Times may be hard and business doubtful for those who are on the competitive plane, but they can never be so for you; you can create what you want, and you are above fear.

Never talk about times being tough, or business situations being uncertain. It might be hard and business might be risky for those in competition, but it can never be that way for you; you can create what you desire, and you rise above fear.

When others are having hard times[148] and poor business, you will find your greatest opportunities.

When others are struggling and facing tough times in their business, you will discover your biggest opportunities.[148]

Train yourself to think of and to look upon the world as a something which is Becoming, which is growing; and to regard seeming evil as being only that which is undeveloped. Always speak in terms of advancement; to do otherwise is to deny your faith, and to deny your faith is to lose it.

Train yourself to think of and see the world as something that is always becoming and growing; and to view apparent evil as simply something that is undeveloped. Always speak in terms of progress; to do otherwise is to deny your beliefs, and to deny your beliefs is to lose them.

Never allow yourself to feel disappointed. You may expect to have a certain thing at a certain time, and not get it at that time; and this will appear to you like failure.

Never let yourself feel disappointed. You might expect to have something at a specific time and not receive it then, which can feel like a failure to you.

But if you hold to your faith you will find that the failure is only apparent.

But if you keep your faith, you'll see that the failure is just an illusion.

Go on in the certain way, and if you do not receive that thing, you will receive something so much better that you will see that the seeming failure was really a great success.

Keep moving in the right direction, and if you don’t get what you want, you’ll end up with something even better that will show you the apparent setback was actually a big win.

A student of this science had set his mind on making a certain business combination which seemed to him at the[149] time to be very desirable, and he worked for some weeks to bring it about. When the crucial time came, the thing failed in a perfectly inexplicable way; it was as if some unseen influence had been working secretly against him. He was not disappointed; on the contrary, he thanked God that his desire had been overruled, and went steadily on with a grateful mind. In a few weeks an opportunity so much better came his way that he would not have made the first deal on any account; and he saw that a Mind which knew more than he knew had prevented him from losing the greater good by entangling himself with the lesser.

A student of this science focused on creating a specific business partnership that he believed was very desirable, and he spent several weeks trying to make it happen. When the critical moment arrived, the plan failed in a completely confusing way; it felt as if some unseen force was secretly working against him. He wasn’t disappointed; on the contrary, he thanked God that his wish had been denied, and he continued on with a grateful mindset. Within a few weeks, an opportunity that was much better came his way, and he realized he wouldn’t have wanted to go through with the first deal at all; he understood that a Mind which knew more than he did had saved him from missing out on the greater good by getting caught up with the lesser.

That is the way every seeming failure will work out for you, if you keep your faith, hold to your purpose, have gratitude, and do, every day, all that can be done that day, doing each separate act in a successful manner.

That’s how every apparent failure will turn out for you if you maintain your faith, stay focused on your goals, practice gratitude, and do everything you can each day, handling each task successfully.

When you make a failure, it is because you have not asked for enough;[150] keep on, and a larger thing than you were seeking will certainly come to you. Remember this.

When you fail, it’s because you haven’t aimed high enough; keep going, and something bigger than what you were looking for will definitely come to you. Remember this.

You will not fail because you lack the necessary talent to do what you wish to do. If you go on as I have directed, you will develop all the talent that is necessary to the doing of your work.

You won't fail because you're missing the talent to achieve your goals. If you follow my advice, you'll develop all the skills you need to succeed in your work.

It is not within the scope of this book to deal with the science of cultivating talent; but it is as certain and simple as the process of getting rich.

It’s not the purpose of this book to cover the science of developing talent, but it’s just as clear and straightforward as the process of becoming wealthy.

However, do not hesitate or waver for fear that when you come to any certain place you will fail for lack of ability; keep right on, and when you come to that place, the ability will be furnished to you. The same source of Ability which enabled the untaught Lincoln to do the greatest work in government ever accomplished by a single man is open to you; you may draw upon all the mind there is for wisdom to use in meeting the responsibilities which are laid upon you. Go on in full faith.

However, don’t hesitate or doubt for fear that when you reach any specific point you might fail due to lack of skill; just keep going, and when you arrive at that point, the skills you need will be provided to you. The same source of ability that allowed the uneducated Lincoln to achieve the greatest work in government ever done by one person is available to you; you can tap into the vast resources of knowledge to help you handle the responsibilities placed upon you. Move forward with complete confidence.

CHAPTER XVII.
Summary of the Science of Getting Rich.

There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.

There is a thinking substance from which everything is made, and which, in its original state, spreads through, fills, and occupies the empty spaces of the universe.

A thought in this substance produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.

A thought in this matter creates the thing that the thought envisions.

Man can form things in his thought, and by impressing his thought upon formless substance can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.

Man can shape things in his mind, and by imprinting his thoughts onto formless material, he can bring into existence whatever he envisions.

In order to do this, man must pass from the competitive to the creative mind; otherwise he cannot be in harmony with the Formless Intelligence, which is always creative and never competitive in spirit.

To achieve this, a person must shift from a competitive mindset to a creative one; otherwise, they won't be in sync with the Formless Intelligence, which is always creative and never competitive in nature.

Man may come into full harmony[153] with the Formless Substance by entertaining a lively and sincere gratitude for the blessings it bestows upon him. Gratitude unifies the mind of man with the intelligence of Substance, so that man’s thoughts are received by the Formless. Man can remain upon the creative plane only by uniting himself with the Formless Intelligence through a deep and continuous feeling of gratitude.

A person can reach complete harmony[153] with the Formless Substance by holding a genuine and vibrant sense of gratitude for the blessings it provides. Gratitude connects a person's mind with the intelligence of the Substance, allowing their thoughts to be received by the Formless. A person can stay in the creative realm only by connecting with the Formless Intelligence through a deep and ongoing sense of gratitude.

Man must form a clear and definite mental image of the things he wishes to have, to do, or to become; and he must hold this mental image in his thoughts, while being deeply grateful to the Supreme that all his desires are granted to him. The man who wishes to get rich must spend his leisure hours in contemplating his Vision, and in earnest thanksgiving that the reality is being given to him. Too much stress cannot be laid on the importance of frequent contemplation of the mental image, coupled with unwavering faith[154] and devout gratitude. This is the process by which the impression is given to the Formless, and the creative forces set in motion.

A person must create a clear and specific mental picture of what they want to have, do, or become, and they need to keep this mental picture in their mind while being truly grateful to the Supreme for granting all their desires. Someone who wants to get rich should spend their free time reflecting on their Vision and sincerely thanking the universe for making it a reality. It's crucial to regularly think about this mental image, along with having unshakeable faith and deep gratitude. This is how the impression is made on the Formless, and the creative forces are set into motion.[154]

The creative energy works through the established channels of natural growth, and of the industrial and social order. All that is included in his mental image will surely be brought to the man who follows the instructions given above, and whose faith does not waver. What he wants will come to him through the ways of established trade and commerce.

The creative energy flows through the existing paths of natural growth, as well as the systems of industry and society. Everything captured in his mental image will definitely reach the person who follows the steps outlined above and whose faith remains strong. What he desires will come to him through the established routes of trade and commerce.

In order to receive his own when it shall come to him, man must be active; and this activity can only consist in more than filling his present place. He must keep in mind the Purpose to get rich through the realization of his mental image. And he must do, every day, all that can be done that day, taking care to do each act in a successful manner. He must give to every man a use value in excess of the cash value[155] he receives, so that each transaction makes for more life; and he must so hold the Advancing Thought that the impression of Increase will be communicated to all with whom he comes in contact.

To get what he wants when the time comes, a person needs to be proactive; and this effort should involve more than just occupying his current role. He must focus on the goal of becoming wealthy by realizing his mental vision. Each day, he should do everything possible that day, making sure to perform each task successfully. He should provide each person with a value that exceeds the cash he receives, so that every transaction contributes to a greater life; and he must maintain a mindset of growth so that the impression of abundance is shared with everyone he interacts with.

The men and women who practice the foregoing instructions will certainly get rich; and the riches they receive will be in exact proportion to the definiteness of their vision, the fixity of their purpose, the steadiness of their faith, and the depth of their gratitude.

The people who follow these instructions will definitely get rich, and the wealth they gain will directly reflect how clear their vision is, how strong their determination is, how steady their belief is, and how deep their gratitude runs.
