STITCH GAUGE: The term “STITCH GAUGE” is the most crucial part of all knitting instructions because the sizing of any knitted garment is based on this gauge. You MUST stick to the gauge provided, or your finished piece won't be the size specified in the instructions.

TO CHECK STITCH GAUGE: Cast on about 20 sts using the yarn and needles you'll use for the main part of your project. Work in the pattern stitch specified for 3 inches. Bind off all sts. Block this knitted swatch, then use a ruler to count the number of sts per inch. If your stitch gauge has MORE sts per inch than what's given in the instructions, try the next larger size needle and check your gauge again. If your stitch gauge has LESS sts per inch than what's indicated, try the next smaller size needle and check your gauge again. The IMPORTANT THING to remember is that the needle size doesn't matter as long as your stitch gauge is correct.

GARTER STITCH: Knit every row. It takes 2 rows to create 1 ridge.

STOCKINETTE STITCH: Knit 1 row, purl 1 row alternately when working on straight needles. When working in the round on a circular needle or double-pointed needles, knit every round.

SEED STITCH: On the first row * K 1, P 1, repeat from * to the end of the row. On all following rows, knit over the purl stitches and purl over the knit stitches.

RIBBING: In the first row, follow the ribbing pattern provided. In all subsequent rows, knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches.

TO SLIP A STITCH: Whenever the instructions say to do a sl st, always insert the right-hand needle into the st to be slipped as if you were going to purl, unless stated differently.

MARKERS: When your task requires a marker, use a small round paper clip for this purpose. While working, always move this marker from one needle to the other.

JOINING YARN: Whenever you can, always join a new ball of yarn at the start of a row. If you need to join the yarn while working across a row, leave an end that's about 4 inches long; then continue with the new ball of yarn on the next stitch, also leaving a 4-inch end. After working for another inch, tie these two ends in a square knot to ensure the tension matches the other stitches. When you're done, weave in these ends on the wrong side for 1 inch.

CHOOSING A COLOR: Every woman has her own favorite colors that look best on her and match the rest of her wardrobe. That's why we haven't listed a specific color for any model, except for those models that feature a combination of colors. Even in these cases, feel free to express your individuality by picking other color combinations if you'd like.

SLIT: Row 1: Work 1 double crochet in each of 2 stitches, 1 double crochet in the center stitch, chain 2, turn—4 stitches. Work 2 rows evenly in double crochet. Cut the yarn. Join yarn in the center stitch of the first row of the neckband, chain 2, work 1 double crochet in each stitch to the end of the row, chain 2, turn. Work 2 rows evenly in double crochet. Row 4: Work 1 double crochet in each of 2 stitches, yarn over, pull up a loop in the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop in the first stitch of the other side, * yarn over and draw through all loops on the hook, 1 double crochet in each stitch to the end of the row, chain 2, turn. Work evenly in double crochet until the neckband measures 13 inches, chain 1, turn.

SECOND END: Row 1: Work 3 single crochets in each single crochet of the previous row—19 stitches. Work back and forth in single crochet on 19 stitches for the same number of rows as the other end. Then at one end, decrease 1 stitch each row until 3 stitches remain. Fasten off. Work 1 row of single crochet around the ends. Steam lightly.

Using a 5-inch hook, create 4 strips with 920 loops each. END FRINGE: Using a 1½-inch hook, make 2 strips of 110 loops each, working single crochet as close to one prong of the hook as possible.

TO JOIN STRIPS: Place 2 strips side by side. Using a bone crochet hook, pick up the first 2 loops of the right-hand strip on the side closest to the other strip. Then, pick up the first 2 loops of the second strip on the side closest to the first strip and pull these 2 loops through the 2 loops already on the hook: * pick up the next 2 loops of the first strip and pull through the 2 loops on the hook: pick up the next 2 loops of the second strip and pull through the 2 loops on the hook: repeat from * until the 2 strips are joined. Sew the last 2 loops securely with matching thread. Join all strips in the same way.

FINISHING: Line the stole with taffeta. Sew on sequins as shown in the photograph. Attach the end fringe, securing it between the taffeta and the stole.

Knit.

Row 2: K 3, * yo, K 2 together, K 6, repeat from * ending yo, K 2 together, K 2. Repeat these 2 rows for the pattern stitch.

Cast on 79 stitches. Continue in pattern stitch until the piece measures 72 inches, finishing with Row 1. Bind off.

FINISHING: Crochet 1 row of single crochet on the long sides. Cut the velvet ribbon into 2-yard pieces. Weave the ribbon through each row of your stitches. Sew at each end of the stole. FRINGE: Cut strands of yarn to 17 inches long. Using 4 strands, tie a knot for fringe in every other stitch across both ends.

Knit.

Purl.

Row 3: Knit 2 together 3 times, * yarn over, knit 1, repeat from * 5 more times. Knit 2 together 6 times, repeat from * across the row, ending with knit 2 together 3 times instead of 6 times.

Knit.

Repeat these 4 lines for the pattern stitch.
